Robert Andrew “Randy” Brown, 57, of Lanett, Alabama, went home to be with his Lord on Tuesday, May 17 at Emory University Hospital, Atlanta, Georgia surrounded by his loving family and friends. Randy was born in Langdale, Alabama on December 14, 1953, the third of four children born to David Lee Brown and Mattie Frances Pepper. He was preceded in death by parents, his sister, Jennifer Diane Brown, his brother, Jimmy Lee Brown and his nephew, Phillip Wayne Buchanan, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Amanda Sherrer Brown, two children, Ramona (Dustin) Hughes of Panama City, Florida and David (Susanna) Brown of Louisville, Kentucky, grandsons Charles Wheeler Brown, Thomas Andrew Hughes, Thomas Young Brown and William Alexander Hughes. He is also survived by his loving sister, Debbie (Phillip) Buchanan, sisters-in-law, Melanie Brown, Teresa Sherrer, Linda Colley and Melissa Smith, nieces, Natalie Eldridge, Della Cheeney, and Lauren Buchanan, nephews Mitchell Brown and Lee Colley and a host of loving cousins, extended family and friends.

A life-long resident of Lanett, Randy graduated from Lanett High School and served briefly in the United States Navy. He then served for 26 years at Lanett Fire and EMS as a firefighter-paramedic, often risking his life to protect life and property in his community. He joined the Lanett Fire Department in 1974 as a firefighter. In 1982, he was promoted to Captain and became one of the first Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) in the area. He completed paramedic training at Southern Union State Community College (SUSCC) and graduated from Chattahoochee Valley Community College with a degree in Fire Science. He also graduated from the Northeast Alabama Police Academy at Jacksonville State University as the “Top Gun” of his class and served the City of Lanett as Fire Marshall. He also attended the National Fire Academy in Emmitsburg, Maryland and served as a faculty member at SUSCC, teaching the basic EMT course and CPR at a number of local high schools and businesses. He retired from the department in 2001 as Fire Chief. He also worked as a locksmith for a number of years with his friends Eddie Britt and Murray Roquemore. Randy devoted his life to the service of others and was happiest when he was helping his fellow man.

Randy was a devoted father and family man and was an avid Lanett High School Band Booster, faithfully running the concession stand at every home football game for ten years. He enjoyed camping at the lake, singing with his family and traveling across the country. He loved to cook for his family and friends and especially enjoyed riding motorcycles with his buddy, Randy Kimble. He was a member of the First Baptist Church Shawmut, where he sang bass in the choir.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 20 at 11am at First Baptist Church Shawmut, Valley, Alabama. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 19, from 5-8pm at McCarthy Funeral Home in West Point, Georgia. In memory of Randy, flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73128-1718.
