Robert Hessig, 1940 - 2022

Robert "Bob" Leroy Hessig passed away on June 3, 2022 in Oakland, CA. He was 81 years old.

Born in Klamath Falls, Oregon, Bob was a successor of a long line of hardscrabble pioneers around Northern California and Southern Oregon. His parents were Jean and Richard Hessig. His mother loved small dogs and blueberry pancakes. His dad loved astronomy, playing the piano, and feeding wild quails. His sister is Mary Jean, a former teacher who now lives in Washington. He graduated from Klamath Union High School.

After earning a Bachelor's degree at Southern Oregon University in 1962, he enlisted in the army and served for three years before returning to school for his Master's in Education. Degree in hand, he moved to Modesto, CA where he taught history and English at the junior high school. It was in Modesto that he met a neighbor named Marilyn who was to become the love of his life. Bob and Marilyn married in 1968 and were together for 53 years. They had a son, Greg, in 1973 before relocating to San Pablo where they had a daughter, Janelle, just over a year later. Bob left teaching to become a Special Agent for the Department of Defense where he worked until his retirement in 2001.

Bob was a wonderful family man. He had an exuberant sense of humor and maintained a youthful spirit throughout his life. He loved rock music and you could often find his car radio tuned to local station 107.7 The Bone. He and Marilyn embarked on many travel adventures together, including far-flung destinations like Ireland, Turkey, and Panama. He had a special interest in military history and was an avid collector of models and toys. He had amassed a truly awe-inspiring collection over the course of his lifetime that brought him endless joy.

Robert Hessig is survived by his wife, Marilyn Hessig of San Pablo, CA; his sister Mary Netzer of Redmond, WA; his daughter, Janelle Hessig of Oakland, CA; his son and daughter-in-law Greg and Leap Hessig; and beloved grandchildren Kai and Kalliyan Hessig of Santa Rosa, CA.

While he was here, Bob Hessig made the world a fun and colorful place. He is dearly loved and missed.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the family home in July.
