His Life

THERE WAS A QUALITY about Rocco Biggs like no other!  He was a man who made things Happen! But not without the help of some very kind and humble people.  Together they shared the same dreams and goals!  They also believed in Daddy’s “Passions”. This Group of people with” Rocky “made a small community grow in many ways.

We want to share a story with you and that we read in the paper about Daddy! In 1975 Rocco organized a citizens committee to prevent the board of Education from firing 10 Teachers and a principal for what the committee believed was undue cause. So effective, was the effort that, for one day the entire school system shut down and thousands of adults turned out in protest for a town meeting.  As a result, the firings were halted.  That’s just one of many crusades that “Rocky” did for the community.

Rocky Biggs and community members set out to transform the City Landfill “The Dump”and turn it into softball fields for the “Pigtail-Ponytail girls softball leagues.  People of the community said it would take five to six years to build. It took him less than two years, which is still there to this day!  Rocky felt that the girl athletes needed a place of their own and at the time he considered us to be the “UNDERDOGS”. Well, if Rocky felt that you were not privileged or unrecognized for what ever reason!  He would change it!  There was no job too small for our father.

Daddy had a lot of friends, he was once inspired with his next venture by a wonderful man. He was friend,  the coach of the football team and a community leader, Tony Surace.  The two of them were unstoppable in forming the “Millville Hall of Fame”. Rocky, became the President and started a committee to which his foundation now stands today as the “Thunderbolt Club” honoring athletes that daddy believed should be recognized for their achievements.

Rocky, our father was an ALL Star organizer. He was passionate about what he did for young athletes in his community.  Rocky was the Chief organizer of the Holly Bowl Football Classics and the East-West Football classics that grew bigger and bigger over the years in South Jersey.  These events were to raise money for the Cancer Treatment Centers.  As we read old news paper articles about Daddy and remember ALL of his  kind hearted ventures he did throughout his life.  The one thing we all remember, he would say I couldn’t have done it alone.  Rocky was very modest and humble when it came to accepting praise.  If anyone deserved a Big THANK YOU!! It was Rocky Biggs!

Rocky was the proud owner of the “Red Cottage” Sub Shop on fourth and Sassafras St. in Millville and had a catering business back then.  This is where Rocky would conduct many community meetings and brainstorm with the Mayor, City Commissioners, Business man, Coaches, Teachers and just the neighbors.  Rocky would invite and feed the entire football team and coaches on Saturday mornings before the big game. His town spirit and excitement for these upcoming athletes was amazing.  Rocky was tireless when it came to his passions.  We have been blessed with a wonderful father, a man of compassion, unselfishness, very generous and a heart of gold.  If you had the opportunity to meet “Rocky” then you were blessed as well.

Daddy you will be missed dearly by your daughters Valarie, Veronica, Tiffany and Roxanne! We know how much you adored us girls.  Your grandchildren Ronnie Leider, Barb Leider, Olivia Kirby, Travis and Trent Tarr, will be reminded of your legacies.  His son- in –laws Ron Leider and John Tarr and your many Friends and special thoughts from Kermit and everyone at Eastern Shore who misses your daily humor.

There will be a service held in a few months for “Rocky” to celebrate his passion for life.
