Dear Friends
This memorial website was created in memory of our friend and colleague, Roger Adlard, who passed away very suddenly and completely unexpectedly on the 5th October 2021.
Plastic surgery has not only lost a great hand surgeon and fantastic colleague, but above all we have lost a much loved friend. Our team here at St George's is utterly devastated. He was universally loved and always managed to make everyone smile, if not laugh out loud. He is sorely missed.
Our thoughts are with his wife Julie and his family at this time.
We know that many of you knew Roger and will undoubtedly have happy memories of him. Please share your thoughts /stories /messages here. We are sure this will help us all come to terms with this tragic loss.

Just cannot believe its 2 years since he's gone...if I was at Georges I would visit his bench. So hope someone has been today. Sending you a heavenly hug Roger....we miss your cheesy jokes, your funky socks, your penchant for monster munches ( ugh!) , your fabulous font of cinematic trivia knowledge but mostly your love of life and a good laugh! We miss you Roger...team Plastic has lost a bit of its shimmer! Xx

I’m not often on Facebook and have heard about this for the first time. Shocked and saddened! Roger (Dodgerama) and I were plastics SHOs in Salisbury. My fondest memories were when he’d walk into theatre, crack a very corny joke and when he saw that the consultants weren’t laughing, he’d say, “Okay, I’ll get my coat” and leave. The irony is that I was at a fancy dress last night dressed as Freddie Mercury and the last time I did that was in fact with Roger, 20 years ago. We got dressed in his spot at the doctor’s res. He was of course James Bond, his hero. My heartfelt sympathy goes out to Julie and the rest of his family.

I went to school with Roger, although our paths rarely met, as Roger´s talents lay in the sciences, not on the sports ground. I had not seen or contacted him in 32 years, but I´m sad to hear the news of his passing, whilst consoled that he had made his mark within his profession at St George´s Hospital.
All the way from Perú, ´Bendiciones, y descansa Roger´.

I only found out your passing today..what a shock, I knew Roger through friend of a friend.
Lovely man, turned out that he trained the surgeon that rebuilt my fingers at Broomfields
My sincere condolences to the family

Roger and I worked together as plastic surgery SHOs in Salisbury; part of a dynamic and gregarious bunch of juniors at the time. We had many Thursday nights out in the restaurants of Salisbury, culminating in a trip to the nightclub. Dubbed “Dodgerama El-Dorado” by the inimitable Nick Karinos, I remember his fun-loving persona, gorgeous deep voice and astounding knowledge of film, but most of all because he was an utterly kind and trustworthy person. Thanks for the memories, Dodger.

The whole family were upset to hear of Rogers death . We knew Roger when he was still a young doctor (regularly studying for and failing exams) . We all have lovely memories of him on a Cornish beach spending hours damming streams and amusing the kids. His kindness and humour and love of tech never changed.
All our love to Julie .

I am devastated to hear this very sad news. Mr Adlard treated my hands for arthritis early in August and I was due to see him again at the end of November for a follow up appointment after X-ray guided treatment on my right hand. My time in theatre was ‘great fun’! We listened to Neil Diamond and discussed various subjects from curry to Christmas dinner! I received the call from Epsom hospital to cancel this follow up appointment, no reason was given but I couldn’t understand why his clinics were being cancelled. I was hoping he had found a new post and was moving on. I met him only on 3 occaisions and found him to be very understanding , friendly and a genuinely nice person.
This news makes me so sad that such a nice man has lost his life prematurely. My thoughts are with his family and friends.

My Deepeest condolences to all who knew him especiallyto his family

I first met Roger in the mid 90s when he came to the British School of Osteopathy to assist with some Chemistry lectures his father was giving. After a day of chemistry he joined us in the bar and bought a round of drinks. Several drinks later I headed home slightly unsteadily - my head full of funny stories Roger had told (with a bit of Chemistry lurking somewhere). We kept in touch over my 4 years in London with him often joining us in the bar and elsewhere. He struck me as a thoroughly decent and dependable person: funny, kind, wise and genuine. He kindly organised it so a fellow student and I spent a day with him in A&E to see what went on, including a trip to the roof to see the air ambulance. So very sad that someone who gave and achieved so much should die so young; he seemed to have worked out what life is about: do good and make the world a better place.

Such a beautiful service for Roger . I joined in from afar on the web. Beautiful words . Sincere and heartfelt memories from so many people whose lives he touched in one way or another . Joyful memories in abundance . Sending special love to Julie whose loss cannot be imagined . Well done ‘Auntie Maggie’ for you special words and to brother Graham and everyone who contributed . There is a saying ‘ live like you would want to be remembered at your funeral’ . Roger would never have thought of the amazing love and admiration that was shared today . Fondest love to all whose life will have a Roger shaped hole forever more xx

Roger,

Your passing has left a void in the department at St George's which will be impossible to fill. We have all lost a great colleague and friend. Your mix of abilities and qualities were unique. You were the go-to man for all things DIY, gadgets and tech, Spanish, foodie, and music, as well as hand and plastic surgery. Your breadth of interests was immense and it was always a pleasure to learn something new from you. You always carried a smile, were most generous of your time and experience, and truly brought joy with you whenever you came into the room. We miss you greatly and can only begin to imagine how devastating your loss has been to Julie and your family. My thoughts are with them all.

You have sadly left us too soon. May you rest in peace.

My name Anthony Lelliott, Roger was my surgeon, I sliced my hand in a life changing accident, and Roger saved my hand in a long operation.
I admired him so much and devastated for him and his family, such a loss to
St George’s and the medical profession.
Just want to send my condolences to the hand unit and to his family.
RIP Roger Adlard . You will be missed.

I was very sad to hear this news today. I had the great pleasure of knowing Roger as a trainee, having appointed him as a Specialist Registrar when I was Training Program Director for London Deanery, and then when he worked at St Andrew’s. He was thoughtful, kind, funny and never afraid to ask for help or advice. He was a model trainee and from what others have said here, a model Consultant. Though he is sadly gone much too soon, he lives on in all our fond memories and in all those he helped as a plastic surgeon. I hope someone can write a good obituary for him.

I had the great pleasure of working with Mr Adlard as a registrar at St George’s. He was a highly skilled reconstructive surgeon, with surgical cases making national news, but beyond this, he was a man who was loved by patients and staff alike. I was always amazed by his way of relating to patients of all ages and walks of life. He had a real gift in this way and a charming presence about him with an ability to bring a smile to the face of the most anxious patient in a stressful situation.
He clearly had a brilliant mind with an astounding depth of knowledge ranging from surgery to music and film. I always enjoyed discussing the latest films or talking about experiences of travelling the world with many a laugh had. I will greatly miss this wonderful surgeon and true gentleman

Roger was my first boss when I started as a registrar at St George's and he was a pleasure to work with, a confident and talented surgeon who was a great trainer, and always a pleasure to operate with. His wit and good humour will be sorely missed and he had this wonderful ability to get on well with everyone around him and make the whole team feel valued.

I knew Roger as a colleague from St Helier Skin Cancer MDT, and also as my hand surgeon when I injured my finger. He was always so approachable and kind. He lived life to the full, and I loved to hear stories from his frequent travels. He is greatly missed. My condolences to his family and friends, and to his colleagues at St Georges.

I had the greatest pleasure of first working with Roger when I was an SHO at Charing Cross in 2005 and then again when we registrars a couple of years later at St George's. Genuinely one of the funniest men I have ever met and the wittiest of raconteurs. A real zest for life. In latter years we would would compare our Melbourne fellowship experiences and how much we missed that city. A true king on the dancefloor. The world shines a little less brightly without you in it my friend. Travel well. You were a true gentleman.

A good friend from the good days. Roger was a bloody great laugh. Had a bloody great laugh. His passing upsets me more perhaps than I would’ve expected as I’ve not seen or heard from him for so long. But I remember him so well and with so much fondness. A great bloke.

I only heard of Roger passing away today and what tragic news. My friendship with him was through a circle of NHS friends and I will always remember him for his fantastic sense of humour and his ability to have the room in fits of laughter with his jokes. What devastating news. I was lucky enough to work with Roger at Salisbury and was greatly inspired by his dedication to surgery and ability to put people at ease. I met Roger at university, before I met my husband, he was my London Hospital Union drinking buddy and most excellent dancer. He was one of the kindest, most thoughtful people . He was also hilarious , told the worst dad jokes and was a demon with the selfie stick. When he and Julie came to Australia it was so lovely to reconnect with him and meet Julie, the perfect couple. Like everyone else I feel so privileged to have had him in my life, but so gutted that life can be so unfair. Sending so much love to Julie and Graham at this really sad time.

It was a privilege to meet, work and get to know Roger in Melbourne during his fellowship at the Western Hospital. He did indeed know how to make people smile, including some of the most hardened patients! Roger was a welcome friendly face when I moved to London & seeing him subsequent was guaranteed be laughter-filled event. I send my sincere condolences to Julie, his family & to those who knew him far better than I, who are also deeply saddened. Rest in peace.

I was so shocked and saddened to read about Roger.  I knew Roger when he was a SpR for plastics at STG and I was the service manager.  Roger always had a joke to tell - some funnier than others.  It was lovely to see him come back to STG as a consultant (all grown up).  My thoughts are with his family and loved ones.

Since learning of Roger's passing , I cannot stop thinking about him and poor Julie. He really was such a top guy ! Scrubbing with him at the qvh , always meant you had a great day . I loved his humour and kindness, and he had a smile that lit up his whole face . I remember one particular time myself and a colleaque were working in theatre with him and we had pulled up a picture on social media of him in his speedos and we were all laughing and taking the mic , saying oooh look at you in your budgie smugglers , ofcourse he was laughing and joining in with the banter too! I'm so so sorry for his wife and family. Shine Bright Roger as you always did xx

I am so sorry to hear that Roger has passed away. As my first boss when I arrived at St George's, he made a real and lasting impression on me. Professionally, he was an adept surgeon and an excellent and hugely supportive trainer. More broadly, he was generally just great, great fun to be around. He always had a multitude of amusing anecdotes and or dodgy jokes to tell, cared deeply about his patients and was never afraid to stand up for what he thought was right. Within the plastics department and wider hospital, his humour and unassuming manner made him popular with colleagues at all levels and across nearly every discipline. His loss will leave a huge hole at St George's and I will sorely miss him.

On behalf of the Plastic Surgery Department at QVH

Without exception, Roger is remembered with great fondness by all of those at QVH who had the pleasure to work alongside him. Roger possessed that rare combination of old school charm and effortless wit, never failing to lift the spirits of those around him. No-one ever had a bad word to say about Roger (a rare achievement for a surgeon). Junior doctors wanted to emulate him, nurses loved to work with him, and his patients were safe in the hands of a skilled, compassionate, and generous man. Our sincere condolences to Rogers family, friends, and colleagues. We shall miss him.

I have known Roger for 5/6 years as I was the partner of his brother Graham. We usually spent either Christmas or New Year together with both Roger and his wife Julie. He loved to see and spend time with both his niece Margo and his nephew Bruno. He would spend hours building and playing lego with both of them.

He absolutely loved his life and lived it to the full! He devoted himself to the nhs and his patients! He was the most humble and down to earth character I have ever met! In his spare time he loved to grow things in his greenhouse and had a passion for various types of chilli plants. He found this relaxing and enjoyable.

He certainly worked hard but also enjoyed his free time to the full. Both him and Julie loved to get out and about as much as they could. On hearing this news I became numb for several days and was in absolute shock! I cannot imagine the pain that Julie and the rest of his family are feeling right now. Roger was so vivacious and had such a zest for life!

Days before he died he went to see the new James Bond film and a very poignant and meaningful poem is read out at the end of the film. One sentence reads, "the proper function of man is to live and not exist" Roger has been taken before he should have been. It is a reminder to us all that tomorrow is never promised, and to be thankful for everything that we have.  I will miss you Roger and I am utterly devastated. I hope you are in a beautiful place, and that on arrival you we're greated by your father.

My dear friend,

So sad and shocked to hear you left this world suddenly. You were one of my first registrars in my very first plastic surgery SHO job at QVH and you taught me so much. Our paths crossed again briefly at Wexham park and then at St George’s of course, where you were a brilliant hand consultant. Always calm and smiling, making everyone around you feel at ease. I will miss hearing you laugh, your permanent tan making us all jealous and our chats about GOT and other movies. RIP my friend, you have left a big hole in the plastic surgery world and we will never forget you.

Like everybody here, this news has come as a total shock.
Roger has brought light to our lives in so many ways.
For me, it was earlier in our lives when we became Summertime castle builders & sand eel fishermen & we tackled the problem of carrying 6 dripping ice creams each, across a crowded beach. Such fun times.
To Julie, Graham, friends, colleagues and families, I can only add to the condolences & send my hugs at such a difficult time.
Our thoughts are with you!
