Blessed with two Dads

January 8, 2013

Most people grow up with one Dad and are lucky if he is a decent man. I was fortunate to grow up with two and both were exceptional guys, who despite the differences in their upbringings (large family/small family, big city/small town) were in many ways cut from the same cloth (Veterans, Electricians, family men). My biological Dad lived in the home I grew up in and my "bonus Dad" lived across the street with his wife, where he was raising my best friend and her five sisters. Ron Stalberger made the most of life, worked hard and enjoyed the fruits of his labors. Most of all he was a nice guy who always had time for not only his own family but for his neighbors and his kid's friends. It is a huge loss to a family when a cornertone and anchor like Mr. Stalberger is lost but the thing about a man who makes his family the priority of his life is that there are so many good memories. Neither of my Dads were fancy or flashy guys, they didn't have jobs that required distant travel and expense accounts. Neither ever was financially rich but what they left was so much greater than what a man can leave who has financial wealth but gained it by being a stranger to his own family. It never really feels like Ron is truly gone because there is always one more story to recollect, one more memory to laugh about, a lessen recalled. I prefer to think that he is just up a ladder somewhere and look forward to our next encounter. Daughter #7
