His Life

My Dad

March 1, 2019

There a few words to describe my father but I'll try -

A loving and devoted HUSBAND to Mom for nearly 60 years, a supportive and caring FATHER, a loyal and faithful UNCLE, a loving Grandfather, a true FRIEND to many and a faithful Catholic and believer in Jesus Christ.

I’m the oldest of six children that Dad and Mom raised with Stephen, Christine, Brian, Karen and Ronnie. He love spending time with us and his grand children Tiffany, Hunter, Michael, Matthew, Claire and little Brian.

If you knew my father, you know he was a fighter! He had quite a few battles with different cancers lymphoma, lung, skin, liver and heart issues over the last 10-15 years and he gave them all HELL – which is a great tribute of his will to live and love for his wife and life with us. I give Mom all the credit as Dad's advocate through it all, leveraging her nursing experience and drive to enjoy life was the key motivator for him- as they traveled the world together and never missed a chance to visit the casino or a great meal with friends and family.

I'll remember all the great times camping, long family drives, visits with his grandchildren and special trips to the Italian Northern Lakes, the cruise down the Rhine river, the trips to Napa and Cancun. These memories will ALWAYS hold a special place in my heart.

We will miss your laughter and smile - I love you Dad!

Irish Poem

March 6, 2019

Remembered Joy
Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free!
I follow the plan God laid for me.
I saw His face, I heard His call,
I took His hand and left it all…
I could not stay another day,
To love, to laugh, to work or play;
Tasks left undone must stay that way.
And if my parting has left a void,
Then fill it with remembered joy.
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss…
Ah yes, these things I, too, shall miss.
My life’s been full, I’ve savoured much:
Good times, good friends, a loved-one’s touch.
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief—
Don’t shorten yours with undue grief.
Be not burdened with tears of sorrow,
Enjoy the sunshine of the morrow.

Dad's Navy Days on the USS Willis A Lee 1954-1956

March 2, 2019

Dad didn't talk a lot about his time in the Navy, but he was proud to have served.  We do know that he made friends with the kitchen staff and cooks aboard.  Mom shared that he gained close to 40 pounds in his two years on the ship - always had a great appetite. One of his fondest memories was docking in Italy and Greece ports along side the Onassis Christina O' with all its Hollywood starlets and guests bathing on the deck, providing the sailors much appreciated distractions.

History on the voyages while Dad was deployed on the USS Willis A Lee -a Mitscher-class destroyer in the United States Navy. to the Mediterranean for the first time in July 1955, cruising with the 6th Fleet—the first ship of her type to operate with that force. Upon the conclusion of her first tour with the 6th Fleet later that year, Willis A. Lee returned to the east coast and operated off the eastern seaboard in air defense exercises.

In February 1956, Willis A. Lee—reclassified as a frigate in 1955—sailed southward to the Dominican Republic, where she represented the United States in American Day festivities at Ciudad Trujillo, the capital city of that West Indian nation. She was driven onto rocks at JamestownRhode Island, in a storm on 18 March 1956.[1] The frigate then spent considerable time at the Boston Naval Shipyard on BostonMassachusetts, before resuming active operations. In November 1956, while participating in antisubmarine warfare (ASW) exercises, Willis A. Lee assisted the distressed fishing vessel, Agda, off Montauk PointLong Island, fighting and extinguishing a blazing oil fire and thus saving several lives.
