When I arrived at the museum this community allowed me to be successful with some early wins. Chagall For Children, Discovering Chimpanzees | The Life and Work of Jane Goodall.
We then announced our Andy Warhol exhibition.
A call from Visitor services came saying a man by the name of Ron Doyle was here to see me. I knew him by his maverick reputation and for his creating the Hacienda but we had never met. To use Ron’s words “one wouldn’t pick Ron out of a crowd of two based on what he wore to be a wealthy man.” I gave him a tour as he peppered me gently with questions of what my vision was.
I recall at the time the theatre next door had been vacated and we had hopes of reopening it and managing it. I told him of a mini domed 70mm theatre perhaps and the creation of a film festival. I told him we needed to open it for theatre both local and international. I told him of Warhol and he asked me what kept me up nights about that show. I said while I had secured millions of dollars of artwork on loan I now needed to find funding to ensure climate control on our fourth level making it Grade A exhibit space.
We shook hands and he left.
A week later he called and asked I come meet for lunch around the corner at a restaurant he later owned. It was summer and we sat on the small patio. We made small talk until his friend showed up after playing golf. Ron turned and said to me “I’ve been lookin into that Warhol fellow you told me about, he is pretty impressive, how much do you need to upgrade the museum with climate control.” I mistakenly told him the truth, which was about $150K. He turned back to Irvin and said do you have $50K? Irvin, surprised said “well we worked together before.”
Ron then declared you have your $150K, don’t tell anyone who gave it to you, get a story in the paper for others to give and have a good night sleep.
I did all of those things and then about a week or two later it started to trickle in. First Carl Zehr, Mayor of the day, then reporters and associates. The line was “I hear Ron gave you $150K to help you grow” That was Ron.
At the opening of Warhol, with their backs to the huge screen I welcomed Irvin and Ron. Irvin leaned in and asked that I not mention his name in my remarks as he hadn’t told his wife about his $50K. Unfortunately on the screen three times our size was a picture of the two of them and a huge THANK YOU! Ron snickered like a cartoon character.
Not always easy I stayed close to Ron over the decade listening to his plans and vision. I also stayed close once I learned of his disease. On Friday night we spoke for the last time. He told me “to build something really great Dave and then he said I have to go now.”

Ron was one of a kind...

March 20, 2021
I heard about Ron Doyle long before I actually met him through my mother, Ludmila Dejmek.  When I would call her up and ask how her day went (and if she had met Ron on that given day), the conversation would open up something like this:

“It’s been tough.  Ron came by the office today and you won’t believe what he’s done; he’s started building and doesn’t have the building permit yet!” or “the chandelier in the Hacienda is too heavy!”.

I started meeting Ron up at the cottage several years back; we would go to mass in Kingsbridge and if he was up, we would bump into him after mass and chat out in the parking lot.  I remember one great conversation we had about men.  He would say to me “…Theresa, I want you to know that all men are assholes; it’s true!”  Ron was a great guy who never minced words and always said what he thought.

I only had one business dealing with Ron and that was about ten years ago.  I wanted to throw a surprise birthday party for Ludmila and was looking to find a meaningful venue that would mean something special to her.  Since she worked on the Hacienda with Ron, I approached him to see if we could have a small party reception there and to figure out the costs involved - you know, my initial thought was nothing really big and to use only a small area of the Hacienda.  We discussed for a while and afterwards Ron said: “I’ll tell you what, Theresa, you can have the whole place for the evening including the atrium; my only stipulation is that you go through Bingemans”.  Our deal was sealed with a firm handshake and that was it.  He was a real business gentleman and you don’t meet those types of people very often anymore.

Anyways on the evening of the party, Fred and Charlene lured Ludmila to the Hacienda on the pretense there was a business cocktail meeting Ron was hosting.  Ludmila was totally surprised and thinking the party was only to remain in the reception area, she asked Ron if he could possibly show everyone the atrium.  Knowing dinner was to take place there and wanting to sustain the element of surprise to the end, Ron quickly quipped back a firm NO.

So, there you have it; to me, Ron was the kindest and most generous of men who remained a man of faith right up to the end.  I feel a huge void now and he will be greatly missed.

My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in the family.

RON THE "CITY DON"!

March 19, 2021
Our condolences to the DOYLE Family as we are saddened by the news of the UNSUNG HERO!...
Quick couple stories... to share with the Fam Jam about RON The "CITY DON"..
When Ron lived in ayr he would stop buy my shop when it was in Ayr....knock on the window and told me to come outside, he wanted to have his coffee break with me!...
He started telling me about his idea for the Haciena and sketched out on a pocket pad he had his vision of the arches that was inspired by his walk in Spain!...I thought.."whatever CITY DON RON you're Nuts!".. I said..LOL well he sure proved me wrong and the rest of the world...!!!
1 more going back to 1993. (Dating Nadine in highschool)
Ron took me and her out for dinner I remember him ordering a 70.00 bottle of wine and drinking it himself! our dinner was like 300.00 he asked me to drive home...
BUT I always thought to myself "WOW this guy is super successful to be able to afford dinners and bottles of wine of this magnitude!!!
...and he truly was a HUMBLE SUCCESS STORY!
Not only in wealth but in COMMUNITY KINDNESS and assisting others to rise up the the Podium with Ron's Grace & Guidance!!!
Also easter lunch at Nadine's grandparents.... Ron leans over to me and says " pssssst steve my mom would probebly like you better if you took off your ball cap at lunch...then started laughing.....even his humour leaves lasting impressions on Growing up!..
....R.I.P CITY "RON DON" DOYLE...YOU BUILT a LEGACY for the rest of the worlds working stiffs like me that Hardwork and a set of "FAMILY JEWELS"(confidence/taking risks) can allow you to top the podium!...and in Ron's case he wanted everyone and his family on top of the podium while he took the Pic!..

Thanks for your legacy Ron!...

Enjoy your LIFES Next Chapter of rebuilding the PEARLY GATES!
as I am sure you have a wild idea of how they should have been better built!
Our sympathies To the DOYLE family Mrs. Doyle Nadine, Molly, Leslie & Patrick & EXTENDED Family That he touched in his pavement pounding warrior'd  GREATNESS!

My teaching career took me from Montreal to K-W I was a young female teaching Chemistry to an all male class. Ron was in that class. He was bright , helpful and a positive influence. I settled in Ayr  and along came Ron
and Suzanne transforming Gingrich's garage into Country Gardens tea room
and gift shop. Our paths crossed again at Hacienda Sarria .Ron was excited
about that project having walked the Camino de Santiago and happy to have shared that experience with son Patrick. They walked- I did part by bus-
however we had stories to share. When news reached our community about
Ron (Jeff Willmer) stepping up to provide cabins for our homeless, I was
not surprised. Ron was a fine man, compassionate and community leader.
I am thankful to have known him. I am sad.

A Good Friend

March 18, 2021
It took a couple of days for the reality to sink in that Ron is gone. We  have lost a good friend. Ron came into our lives a long time ago (2008).  When we first met, he seems like an ordinary guy. Anyone that is lucky to have Ron as a friend, knows that he is far from ordinary. He dreams in colours and has a big heart.
Ron has broaden our horizon and has shown us "If not Now, When?"

Gone but not forgotten.

As Leslie has said There are just Too many Ron stories!!!Wherever Ron was Stories &/or fun were the theme. We have had the privilege to be a part of many. Terry has known Ron as far back as a young lad who visited his uncle Raymond's in Read & recounts  when his uncle used to have an old model A Ford with 2 tanks - 1 for Gas & 1 for water that Ron would ride with him sometimes & pull up at the general/gas store & ask for water to fill the vehicle telling everyone Look how great this is - It Runs on Water! And maybe that is perhaps the seed that was planted for his elaborate storytelling, dreams, visions etc. We have been a Party to so many & luckily so have our children. Like the time Ron & Jim Logan dropped in & had our children convinced that Jim was a priest. The great partying  at the Read cottage where our children,Ron & Sue's & whoever else was there created plays for us all to watch. The time a bunch of us went to one of the famous Read dances & Trish showed up with 2 different shoes on(different heal heights) & danced all night - No ribbing or stories from that Hahaha! Or the time Ron & Irvin rode their motorcycles to our house in Read like a biker gang to mesmerize our children. The 40th anniversary Cabot Trail tour with Ron & Sue & Wayne & Erica. Ron has always loved to tell a story or create one. We have been part of many & he always graciously  included us in his ventures. We especially  loved our yearly cottage visits & the creation of the Hacienda from the beginning  of an empty abandoned Beet factory to the wedding event vision(Our youngest son was able to have their beautiful wedding there) & his resting  home created from the machine shop. Ron was always excited to share his visions. We truly wish we had a few more years & a proper Goodbye Till we meet again Mo & Terry

Amazing human...

March 16, 2021
I’ve met Ron years and years ago one night after performing at Classicos.

It was at the end of the night and I’ve just finished performing, this guy was coming towards me, a bit buzzed, he came up to me and said -this was awesome you are very talented man I really enjoyed your performance- I’ve said -thanks man I’m happy to hear this- he said -I’m Ron, do you have time? come with me I want to show you my place I’m building- and was talking about this castle like place he was building as I’m packing my gear, he said why don’t you come with me we can go in and have couple glasses of wine while you play some guitar, I’ve said -of course man- but same time didn’t believe a word he was saying thinking here we go again one of those weirdos :) I’m like he probably just wants a free ride well what the hell I’ll give him a ride home but oh boy was I ever wrong but regardless I’ve given him a ride to his place drove him to where hacienda is right now, and sure enough there it was, this amazing place and I was like dude is he for real???

We went in, I’ve grabbed my guitar and started playing while he was pouring wine and talking about his dreams and ideas about this place, while the sound was echoing ever so beautifully inside this incredible palace, he told me his story, he told me about his life, his love for his beautiful wife Suzanne and his journey thru the mountains of Spain how he lost 70lbs during this journey, how he loves this city and this went on and on I was listening my jaw on the floor lol I was so impressed with this man and thinking to myself who the hell is this guy???. . He was Ron Doyle...

That was a special night, a life altering moment and one of the most amazing memories of my life where I’ve met this incredibly generous, hard working and  lovely human being. This special night started our long friendship and he always treated me like a part of his family.

This is Ron for you, he always thought 3-4 steps ahead of everyone and was always incredibly thoughtful, honest and real. I have so many amazing memories with him, it’s absolutely soul crushing for me that he is gone.

I’ll miss you dearly Ron....

A unique human

I’m saddened to hear the news of Ron’s passing. My husband and I spent an afternoon with Ron just a few months ago. I always loved our chats and found Ron to be intriguing. I love how he pushed boundaries and didn’t care what people thought. I am grateful for his stories and introducing me to the Camino de Santiago walk (on my bucket list) and how it changed his life. He lived an interesting lifeand saw amazing things. I only wish we took more time to learn more of his adventures. Maybe you can show my mom that spiritual walk, now that you may be in the same place. She too was intrigued.
We are thinking of you and your family in this time. Rest In Peace Ron. <3
