While we were in Nigeria, Dad Obakpolor, you supported our marriage as a young couple and we named you the godfather to our daughter, Olivia and son, Mitchell.

When we told you about our plan to relocate to England in 2007, you told us our idea of travelling abroad to raise our children was a good decision.

Dad, you invited me, my husband, Augustine and our two children to your home on every other Sunday after Church service. You took our children as your own and you nicknamed our daughter, Olivia, 'small madam' and our son, Mitchell, 'Mitchy'.

Dad, you took my husband as your son, showered him with love and you always had tete-a-tete about so many issues of life. And my husband still treasure those moments.

We named our daughter, Olivet after she was born, Dad Obakpolor, you and mum re-christened her, calling her Olivia instead of Olivet.  Olivia is her name till today. Thank you.

When you bought your Mercedes Benz and drove it to AVMC Church one Sunday, you handed over the keys to my husband, Augustine and told him to take me on a ride to test drive your car.

Also when we showed you our new home after we had built it above foundation stage, you advised us to break down the walls of the dining room and kitchen to make it bigger. You explained to us that God will provide the resources to complete our building but that it was necessary, as it was our family home and we needed to make it spacious. You were so right, Dad.

We spent so many sundays in your house, loved by you, mum and your children and we were always welcome there with big smiles, lots of food and laughter.

When you visited London after we had relocated, you came to see us and we sat down to eat, chat and laugh.

Dad Obakpolor, we will always be grateful for your steady love, prayers, encouragement and support. Rest in perfect peace and rise in glory.

Group Captain Obakpolor was my brother’s father in-law. A man’s man. He and mummy Obakpolor are people whose company I really enjoy. Genial unpretentious people. Daddy Obakpolor was someone whom I could listen to all day long, full of interesting stories about the Nigerian civil war and his time as the Nigerian Football Association Chairman. On the few occasions I was privileged to host Daddy Obakpolor, I was always enthralled by his recollection of the Nigerian civil war and implored him to write his memoirs as an historic factual book for the present and future generations to learn about other aspects of the brutal war. One of the things that stayed with me about his recollection of the war was that he said one would never wish for war on even his or her enemy if they witnessed what war was really like. He was an extremely knowledgeable person who had other ways of examining issues from different angles. A patriotic Nigerian that makes you proud to be a Nigerian and makes you wonder why Nigeria has not attained the heights it is supposed to be at. For with people of his calibre and intellect at the helms of the affairs of Nigeria, Nigeria would have been in a better place by now. He indeed impacted me with his knowledge and I hope he wrote his book before he departed. We love you sir and you will be greatly missed.

It is a heavy heart to write my heart felt message to the entire family of our beloved father, brother, uncle and a mentor. Although I never met him, but I was looking forward to meet him some day, I only heard of him, from his nephew, Mr Precious Obakpolor, who told me growing up with his dad and uncle in his life was where he got his humbleness, and no nonsense attitude from when ever I question him about his character. Gone too soon! But God loves you more big uncle. Rest in peace.
