His Life

Ohio Years

June 23, 2015

Rufus, Mary, and Sally Margaret would live in a house with a very nice woman who was a widow, Mrs. Marsh until they could afford a larger place. They moved to an apartment on the East side of Dayton on Fifth Street.

During their time in East Dayton their family would expand. They welcomed their eldest son, Darwyn Quinn, on September 29, 1955. As it was very important to Rufus, Mary would return to Jackson, Kentucky where she would give birth to Darwyn at the office of Dr. Lewis in what is known as the Jefferson Hotel. Darwyn would go on to be known as "Wendy" a nickname his sister started calling him after a child's program character "Wendy Dan". As she remembers it, Darwyn was always cryiing. That explains how he became known as Wendy.

Rufus moved his family to a small house in what was known as Johnsville, Ohio (now a part of New Lebanon, Ohio). They lived here until Sally Margaret was about to enter the first grade. They bought a house in town (17 Sunset Street).

On April 12, 1965. the Rufus Sewell clan welcomed their last edition, Jeffrey Mark  (Jeff)  Sewell. Prior to Jeff's arrival  Rufus made a job change. He left McCall's after 14 years and went to work for GM's Inland Plant on West Third Street. He was still working there when he and Mary agreed he should go ahead with open heart surgery. On June 27, 1970, Rufus went to sleep awaking on July 13, 1970  in the presence of his Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Although still greatly missed by his children they are grateful for the short while they had him. . He packed a lot of living into his 41 years on this earth and touched many people with his big, generous heart. He left his children with the most precious gift a father could leave his childrfen--priceless memories of a wonderful childhood with a loving, godly father.

Kentucky Years

June 23, 2015

On October 17, 1928 a young male child was born to Tom and Sallie Belle (Gross) Sewell in Quicksand, Kentucky. They named him Rufus. Rufus had 4 brothers: Russell (Russ); Kash; Granville (Gran); Edgar (Ed) and 1 sister Marjorie (Margie).

His youth was spent growing up on Big Branch holler in Quicksand, Kentucky At a very young age (exact age unknown) his mother, Sallie Belle, died of a massive heart at the home and Rufus had to quit school early in his elementary years and go to work and help take care of his younger brother Edgar (Ed). He and Ed would remain very close throughout their lives.

A very important part of his time spent on Big Branch involved going to a little white church which was run by travelling missionarys. It was there he would meet his future bride, Mary Lois Gross. It was at that little white church Rufus and Mary began their courtship. When Mary was about to enter her senior year of high school and was of legal age they decided to get married. At first, Mary's parents did not approve but in the end our grandmother, Margaret Smith Gross, agreed and was a witness at their wedding by the local justice of the peace. Mary went to work at the Home Grocery Store in Jackson, Kentucky and Rufus went to work at the Ohio Coal Company in Hazard, Kentucky. They lived in an small upstairs apartment in Jackson, Kentucky at first but would eventually move to a small green house owned by Walter Radar Gross (Granddaddy Gross) located on Old Highway 15 in Jackson. It was while they lived here their first child, Sally Margaret, was born. One day when Sally Margaret was about 18 months old, Rufus did not go into work due to a migraine headache. The mining company he worked for had a major cave in accident (the very shaft Rufus would have been working in had he gone to work). He never returned to the mines and the next day got on a Greyhound bus for Dayton, Ohio to seek work there. He would get hired at the McCall Corporation and send for Mary and Sally Margaret to come to Ohio.
