Ryan - An Unfinished Symphony

March 18, 2015

I first met Ryan a few years back but really only got to know him over the past couple of years working on a couple of short film projects. I feel so incredibly blessed to have had the honour to sit in a room and create with him. What an infectious and talented soul.

His will be remembered as a patient verse in this complicated song of life. It feels as if his time is not done; that his song has not been fully sung; that the magnitude of his symphony has yet to be written.

But maybe that is our job now.

Maybe we are meant to create a verse of our own when we feel strong enough. Maybe we are meant to embrace his chorus of love and fearlessness when we feel brave enough.

Perhaps if we remember to...

Play out our lives to a tambour of tolerance;
Strum on the frets of the free-spirited;
Patiently pluck away on the keys of kindness;
Conduct our lives with grace;
Mute out mediocrity with a melody of boldness and light.

Perhaps if all we do this, his symphony will feel a little more complete and the magic of Ryan will live on.

Rest in peace magnificent soul.

Ryan. Bug Tapp. DJ Tappabutton.

We will think of you often. We will miss your smile. It is the kind of smile that reaches your eyes. We will always remember the way you made us make you feel. You made people feel hopeful, energized and accepted. Your energy is so welcoming, positive and bright. Each of us are so fortunate to have known you, and enjoyed all that you bring to this world. You have such a passion for life! Your creativity is truly genuine. Endless happy memories flood to mind when we speak your name. This is evident by the crater, your departure has left in our hearts. You have touched a lot of lives. It was so exciting to watch where your journey was taking you. We will not forget. We will carry forward with the lessons you have taught us about being an unconditionally loving, non-judgemental, open minded human being. Oh dude. Everyone is so bummed. I will think of you anytime I hear 90's punk song. I hope you know how special you are.

AND those glasses!

The mountains are calling, and you will be missed.

Burnin' Fire

March 11, 2015

I was fortunate to meet Ryan last summer in Pemberton up at Michaelchuk's ranch. He was there working on the set for a TV show with my girlfriend Andrea Cooney. Andrea was excited to introduce me to Ryan because she knew we'd get along great. We were camping out there that night and we chatted over by our tents on our way over to the bonfire. He casually told us a hilarious story from last time he was in an airport, then pulled an acoustic guitar out of his tent. We all walked to the fire, but he walked ahead, and looking back I could tell he was so eager to just get over there and crack open that guitar case. As we walked I remember thinking to myself how rad of a person he was, even though I just met him. So full of positive energy and stoke for life. We got over to the fire, sat beside him and listened to him play some of our favorite punk rock songs from Against Me!, NOFX and Sublime (not at all your average campfire songs) nice and loud without holding back. We were so stoked. You could easily see the energy of the 15 or 20 people instantly elevate as Ryan started playing. It was impossible to not let it sweep  you up. That kind of experience is so rare these days. I cherish that memory of that night, and not only Ryan, but the effect his spirit had on everyone around him.

Learning to sail.

March 10, 2015

Ryan was one of the first roommates I ever had living in a  old house in Calgary with 2 other close roommates, Chris and max. Did we ever have some good times in that house. Definetley some of the best in my life.  We ended up all parting ways  and he moved to nelson.   A couple years later I made a trip out to visit him, and he had himself this little sail boat. The plan for the day was to load up on a bunch of booze and take  her out on the lake. I asked  Ryan a few times if he had done this before because I was a little worried  about the safety of the boat  and ourselves of course. He assured me that he had been out before, and their was nothing to worry about. So  we loaded the thing up with alcohol and pushed off out onto the lake. About a quarter of the way out onto kootenay lake  a huge gust of wind picked up and almost tipped the sail boat completely over. I looked directly at Ryan and he had a scared surprised look on his face and then starting laughing his ass off. I knew right then and there he had never been out on this sail boat before.  So after a few minutes of panick mostly from me and his other buddy Ben. We were finally able to figuire out how to use the sail to jot back and forth across the lake. It ended up being an amazing day found an abandoned dock we all hung out on for a bit  and had a great time I'll never forget that day or my great friend Ryan. Always ready to have a great time and make the best of life. Love you buddy you ll never be forgotten catch you on the other side.

Just that kind of guy

March 10, 2015

Last time i really got to hang with Ryan was when were filming one of the commericals for his upcoming SOCO5 project. It was a really incredible day shooting in-studio down in vancouver with lots of great people having fun and just enjoying the creativity of it all. Ryan was paying for everything, the cameras, crew, location. He was "the client", top of the ladder, but when it came time to do a coffee run he was the first guy to walk around and connect with everyone there, make sure we got their order right. Ryan and I headed off into the rainy vancouver night to gather up 16 coffees and transport them back without spilling a drop. He made sure everyone got exactly what they wanted and would have been the first guy to offer up his coffee if we had missed one. Which of course we hadn't because Ryan was just on point like that.
Always generous with his time and talent, always inspiring with his creativity and spirit. And there is a large piece of that spirit in everyone Ryan ever met, hugged, or shared a laugh with. He was just that kind of guy.
Big love my friend, gone but never forgotten.
