Ryan Freeman Gard died on May 13, 2021. He lived a full life in his too brief 15 years. He was at home in the water from an early age, and he swam competitively, snorkeled in coastal California and Hawaii, and was a seven-year participant in Sac State Aquatic Camp. Ryan had diverse tastes in music, ranging from the jazz of the big band era to Green Day. He played euphonium in the high school band, and he was a regular participant in Tuba Christmas at McClatchy High in Sacramento. He loved the outdoors and often hiked with his family in forests and fields near and far. Ryan could be mischievous, and he readily shared his wicked sense of humor with others. Ryan loved being with people, and he cherished his friendships above all else. When the pandemic prevented him from seeing his friends in person, he enjoyed many hours with them online, gaming and hanging out.

Ryan is survived by his parents, Gail Harder and Mark Gard. A private memorial service is planned. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Ryan’s memory may be made to the Sacramento Tuba Christmas program (vtonus@gmail.com) or the Davis Art Center (https://davisartscenter.org/).

I am so very sad to learn of your loss. Ryan clearly was a source of great joy in your lives and those of many others. Losing a child is about the hardest thing I can imagine going through as a parent. Holding you in the light and sending love and hugs.

Dear Mark and Gail,
No words can express how terribly sad I feel for you on your loss of Ryan.
Although I never met Ryan, I’ve read updates about Ryan and seen pictures of him at swim meets on Facebook through the years. He was wonderful.
Do know that you are in Sarah and my thoughts.
