Dear Scott, Joanne, Maddy, and Connor,

I have never met a more fun, kind hearted, friendly, and talented individual than Ryan. From rooming with him in Ireland to making memories at Northeastern, Ryan showed unending love and kindness to all that he encountered and I am honored to have had the chance to know and travel the world with him. For as young as he was, Ryan did more living in 18 years than most people would in a lifetime and I have always admired his open mindedness and thirst for adventure. Fun followed him everywhere he went and I will never forget our spontaneous trips in Ireland to places like Wicklow where we played soccer, swam in the ocean, and hiked to the top of the small town to hangout and enjoy the view. I will never forget Ryan and all the memories we made together and want you to know that my prayers are with all of you in this difficult time. Stay strong and know that our love for Ryan and your family will never die. - Lucas Walsh

Hello,

I was an International Student Advisor in Ireland for Ryan. I was heartbroken to hear about his passing and I hope that your family is finding some peace in a truly difficult time.

Ryan was a constant source of strength in Ireland to his fellow classmates and friends. He was always laid back and willing to try new things, even in a foreign country among strangers.

Ryan, you will be missed. To Ryan's family, I send my best wishes and hopes for strength.

Dear Shaw family,
I never had the pleasure of meeting your son, Ryan. I learned of his passing through St. John's prep where our sons currently attend school. My heart is broken over the loss of your beautiful young son. If I could offer words to ease your unimaginable loss it would be this, thank you. Thank you for giving the gift of life to others who needed your help. We lost my sister while waiting for lungs that , sadly, never came. Though all your grief and sorrow you still found the strength to give the the greatest gift of all . Sending all of my prayers to your family now and always

I want to extend my deepest condolences to the Shaw family. I had the pleasure of working with Ryan during his first semester at Northeastern in Dublin. Ryan was an integral part of my Global Experience course, my "family" group, and the N.U.in Program as a whole. He brought a smile to the entire student body, whether it was playing Twister in the apartment courtyard, wearing a Burger King crown in the Student Center, or getting absolutely drenched by a wave at Giant's Causeway. He was full of optimism, ambition, and just an overall great kid. In particular I loved connecting with Ryan over his passions for entrepreneurship. My thoughts and prayers are with you as we mourn his passing but remember the beauty he left behind on the world.

I will always remember the beautiful and talented boy who came to do art after school, he had the true heart of an artist. And so I'll pass this on from an anonymous author.

The tide recedes but leaves behind
bright seashells on the sand.
The sun goes down, but gentle
warmth still lingers on the land.
The music stops, and yet it echoes
on in sweet refrains……
For every joy that passes,
something beautiful remains.

It's been hard to think of anything else since hearing of Ryan's illness and passing. I was happily anticipating playing tennis with you, Joanne, until the horrible news. I almost lost a 29 year old daughter to cancer and I lived in fear of what you have now experienced for over a year. I can't imagine surviving such a loss. I sense you will survive but I so earnestly wish you did not have to know this pain. You are in my thoughts in the most profound way.

Dear Shaw Family,
I am so sorry for your sudden loss of Ryan. I had the privilege of getting to know Ryan very well over the last 5 years, through the Pelletiers (my neighbors). Ryan was one of the kindest, funniest, and most genuine kids I've ever met. Every time Marcus texted me "Come over, Shaw is here" I would immediately get excited, as I knew I was guaranteed a good time, with many laughs along the way, as long as Ryan was around. I am heart broken over the loss of such a great person. It is obvious to me that he made a mark on this world in the short time he was with us. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family at this time of loss. Ryan was an amazing human being and I feel blessed to have known him. -Ryan Flanagan

I have had the privilege of knowing the Shaw family for 25 years. Our lives intertwined in the births of each of our children. Ryan is clearly the result of their loving and unconditional parenting. My fondest moments are listening to Scott's loving stories of each of his children. He would share these beautiful paintings by Ryan painted at a VERY young age - Ryan paints with peace and serenity. Scott's shining smile as he shares Ryan's beautiful work and all of his milestones through the years is something I will treasure forever. Your smile speaks volumes when you share Ryan's stories. I pray for peace and love to the beautiful Shaw family and deeply sorry for you to mourn such a young and sudden passing of your beloved son Ryan. My love and heartfelt thoughts are with you always. Lena, Michael, Alicia and Mike McCauley

To the Shaw family,

My deepest and most sincere condolences are all with you. As a student and member of the Northeastern community I can genuinely say the heart breaking passing of Ryan has been noticeable. From the one semester I met Ryan, I only knew him briefly but he immediately amazed me and our friends with his selflessness, charisma, intelligent and constant radiance of positivity. His name is painted in gold on a grand rock in the Northeastern Quad thanks to the brothers of Pi Kappa Alpha and when I walked out from my residence building this morning, seeing his name painted so proudly, gave the Northeastern community and campus some light again. We know he is with us, as he is with you. Northeastern's thoughts and prayers are all with his family and friends. His memory is forever in our hearts and with every Northeastern Husky. We miss you Ryan and we love you forever.

My sincerest condolences to the Shaw Family and Ryan's closest friends. I had the pleasure of traveling to Jamaica with Ryan for a service trip where I learned about what made Ryan who he was. He was someone who was extremely funny, always smiling and never let the world pass him by. He made the kids smile, he made our teachers smile, and he made me smile. For the little time I knew Ryan I was envious and took note as to how he could light up a room and how well liked he was by everybody. Although he was stripped of his life far too early, he left a lasting memory that can be felt through the thousands of stories people tell, the memories we all shared with him, and finally, through his smile. A smile which was ever-present and was a representation of the joy that Ryan felt for the world, but also the joy the world felt for Ryan. Rest in peace buddy.
