I remember my last visit to COD, you made a point of coming to greet me after the service. You didn't have to. You were so down to earth. You and Sis Ronke reached out to us when we were in Satellite Town (Rock of Ages Parish), and later when we moved to Europe (Jesus House Amsterdam). You were such a God-loving and God-fearing person. May the Good Lord Himself look after your family, friends and loved ones. Good night dear Pastor Chief. Rest peacefully in the bosom of your Lord and Saviour.

A Tribute to Chief-Chief by Bimpe Eskor-Mfon

For many of us in the Apapa Family of RCCG, Chief Oso has always been a beloved and aimiable brother . Right from our Freedom Hall days when we were still just one parish and all our children were still very young, Chief’s compassionate, humourous and generous nature always stood out.

Over the years, Chief and Sister Ronke became a real brother and sister in every sense of the word. My husband, late Pastor Eskor loved Chief Oso so much. By the time we were all sent from Freedom Hall to start The City of David at the Lagoon Restaurant, Victoria Island, our relationship had indeed blossomed and was further solidified by the time the church moved to the City of David sanctuary .

When Bishop Wilson visited
the Church from the US, he also instantly connected with Chief and started calling him “Chief Chief.” The title stuck and soon after that, Sister Ronke became known as “Mummy Chief”.

Chief was such fun to be with: there was never a dull moment when he was around as he would regale us with one joke after the other . The most popular joke that I never got tired of hearing is “ Allo o sinle. Olubadan ninsoro. So ohun to so”  This referred to a phone call answered by a fictitious Oba who assumed that the caller was asking for someone named “Hello”. For many years later, we always had a good laugh at that.

Chief Oso was very generous and was always quick to help many members of the church. He was indeed an enabler and his kindness endeared him to many. I can never forget his generosity to my family at various points of our lives . This ranged from substantial gifts to his presence as a true friend to my husband during his illness.

Chief and Mummy Chief were inseparable. They were indeed a very happy and loving couple, the envy of many and and an example of what a good marriage should be. The clothes they wore to Church were always colour-matched and it was a joy to see them every Sunday. I remember how forlorn he was when she was abroad for some time for medical treatment. He returned to his bubbly nature as soon as she returned to the country.

Chief was jovial and had a way with people. To know him was to love him and my we will surely miss Chief.

It’s unbelievable that we would never again see him stride into church or see his dance steps as he worships his God. Unbelievable that I will never again see him in his house which is next door to our house at the Redemption Camp.

Ah Chief! When I spoke to you less than a month ago, I never knew that it would be for the last time. We were all looking forward to this COVID season coming to an end and for life to return to normal to enable us continue our fellowship in Church. Unfortunately, this was not to be. Your passing has left an indelible mark of pain  in our hearts but we are comforted by the hope of a future reunion in heaven.  You left us much earlier than we expected but we bow to the sovereignty of God. May the Lord comfort Mummy Chief, Lola, Tunde, Niyi, Tola and their spouses, your grandchildren and all members of your extended family.

May the Lord comfort us ,your City of David family and until we meet to part no more,it’s good  night and not goodbye. Rest in perfect peace.

Bimpe Eskor-Mfon.

I did not think we would be here this soon. It is with deepest sorrow and sadness that I write this tribute to you my Chief Chief as known by all that knows him. Chief was a humble, kind, loving, caring and good at heart and soul. You were always so vivacious and so warm and so loving. Always full of energy and presence.
I have so many memories of you and my family on different occasions that you and your lovely wife have visited us in several cities of the United States that we have lived in due to the nature of my profession. I will cherish the time that we had with you and the amazing memories that you have left behind. I will miss how you always made everyone laugh almost to the point of injury. The Bible says in everything give thanks, and I am indeed full of thanksgiving for the priviledge of having had you in my life. You are INIMITABLE and IRREPLACEABLE. We love you but God loves you more and I know that he has you resting comfortable in his everlasting arms. Rest Well Chief Samuel Akinwumi Oso. Rest in Perfect Peace.

Like most memories, my memories of Chief Oso have blurred as the decades have passed; it's hard to make them out individually or to distinguish one from the other, and they've all sort of become one short movie scene, like a vignette.

This is a good thing, I think...this one scene is so clear in what it tells you about Chief Oso that it's easy to say "Yes, for sure, this is who this man was (and this is what I remember about him)."

For some reason, the scene is always at a wedding (because Chief Oso had a huge heart, and loved to celebrate other peoples' joys with them.) I find my way to Chief's table to greet him and Mummy Oso (because I consider them my parents, guardians who put a roof over my head for three years).

As soon as he sees me, Chief extends a hand; I take his right hand with mine and begin to lower my left to touch the floor. Before I can fully get to the floor, he stands and pulls me up and wraps me in this big hug with his left arm (because Chief was so deeply warm and welcoming...always.)

He holds me out in front of him by my shoulders, towering over me (because Chief is a large man), then asks after my parents. He has the biggest smile on (because he was all joy, all the time). I can never quite see his eyes; he always has tinted glasses on (because he was always so darn cool.)

Then he leads me by the hand over to greet Mummy Oso (because they were - as Tola would say - "like 5 and 6." The process of greeting one is incomplete without properly greeting the other.") Then they both tell me to do well, and say a few blessings, as godly parents do to their children, biological or otherwise.

That's it. That's the whole memory.

But the man it recalls remains with me long after the scene ends, and he was so large in all those things: his enthusiasm for celebrating life, his generosity, his warmth, his joy, his cool, his love for his family, his love for God.

Chief Oso was a great man, and I will miss him dearly.

Chief was truly a force of nature whose impact extends beyond imagination , standard of excellence and beacon of hope. His name reverberated throughout the family and as a kind growing i have always wanted to meet him, It was such privilege to meet him years later. Our relationship transcended from an uncle to a father figure before and after I lost my biological father. I will always be grateful for the role he played in my life especially during my wedding. It is sad i did not get the chance to say goodbye, i will miss him dearly but the main consolation is the fact that he is in a better place resting in the bossom of his creator.
Rest on Chief, your legacy is intact and the families you left behind will continue to carry on the goodworks.

Our late Uncle was such a unique person. He warmingly loved everyone that met him including all of the Lanlokuns. He was an extremely generous man and very caring towards all of us.
He will also be missed for his big smile and warm personality. His big presence cannot be ignored because the aura was so strong and powerful that you cannot ignore it. He lived big and only the best of would would do for him. He travelled far and wide.
May the everlasting God grant him eternal and infinite rest forever and ever. Amen.
My prayers goes to the entire family also. May God heal the wounds and unite the children and Aunty Ronke with a strong bond and one accord. Amen.

I called my uncle “Daddy Chief”. The sad news of your passing is still a shock to me. All the memories I have of you have refused to wane, especially because I saw you a day before you left us.

When I got the call that evening, I was scared, yet anxious to pick up the call. I sensed something was wrong, I screamed at the top of my voice on hearing the news of your demise and broke down in tears as I drove hurriedly while hoping I would get to the hospital and you would still be alive.

You were a very gentle, happy and kind person with a great heart. I will miss Sunday afternoon tea where we all sat and enjoyed a good laugh with you. You will be terribly missed but I know that God took you to a better place. Rest well Uncle, Oyinko ( as you fondly called me) will miss you.

When I think about the life of Chief Ayo Oso, Roman 13: 7-8 come to mind.
"Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor. Let no debt remain outstanding, except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law."
Romans 13:7‭-‬8 NIV

Chief lived out the above Apostolic exhortation.
He respected and honored all and sundry that met his acquaintance.
Typically, he would infect you with his inexplicable joy evidenced by his radiant smile and laughter. In over 25 years of our acquaintance, I don't recall ever seeing Chief angry. It was very natural for him to forgive offenses in love and understanding.

His warm demeanor crystallized in the only debt Chief owed, the debt of love, he was generous in love and in giving.
Chief's lifestyle introduced all to the new dimension of the creativity of the Lord Jesus...2Cor 5:17
Chief's life showed us how to trust God in the face of adversity. James 1: 2-4.

In his last days, Chief taught us how to die. From the testimony of his family, while on his sick bed, Chief was still singing and worshipping the Lord, joyfully, culminating in him having a personal encounter with the Lord. Psalm116:15

During his death throes, Chief was still evangelizing and testifying of God's faithfulness to His promise of eternity in His presence, to us believers.

Finally, at this time I know Chief would be grateful if we could shout a loud hallelujah!!!

My Super dearest uncle and father. For me, there are almost no words for this. After all, how do you say “Goodbye” to someone – when you haven’t come to terms with the fact that they are gone? What a wonderful Uncle you were. Whenever I visited you, I was met with joy and a warm smile. You were kind, hospitable, loving and generous, and we all loved you very much. You provided for our family tirelessly and raised all five of us standing by and supporting my mum after our dad died. The role you played in my life I cannot count including being a role model, and walking me down the aisle at my wedding and your continuous willingness to advise and support us even till the very end. Words cannot express my love for you, and though I know God loves you more and you are in a better place. I still wish you had stayed longer in good health. You have indeed fought the good fight and you have finished the race. May the Lord be with you and with your spirit. I’ll miss you a lot.

The news of the departure of Chief Chief has been hard to take in - and yet it is true. He brought laughter to every gathering; so friendly, radiating Godly values. Truly a jolly good fellow.
Our loss is heaven’s gain, and a poem attributed to Henry Van Dyke (1852-1933) captures this moment:

“I am standing upon the seashore.
A ship at my side spreads her white
sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean.
She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until at length
she hangs like a speck of white cloud
just where the sea and sky come
to mingle with each other.

Then, someone at my side says;
"There, she is gone!"

"Gone where?"
Gone from my sight. That is all.
She is just as large in mast and hull
and spar as she was when she left my side
and she is just as able to bear her
load of living freight to her destined port.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her.

And just at the moment when someone
at my side says, "There, she is gone!"
There are other eyes watching her coming,
and other voices ready to take up the glad shout;
"Here she comes!"
And that is dying.”

Adieu Chief Chief. May the Lord comfort Pastor Ronke as well as your biological and church families

We got the news of the sudden passing unto glory of our friend and brother, Pastor Ayo Oso fondly called Chief Chief, by us and most of his friends with rude shock. My wife Funmi waited until we had finished our chores for the day before she broke the news to me. He fondly called me ‘My Doc’.
We all joined RCCG about the same time in 1993 and were drawn into the Workers group by our then pastor Pastor Tony Rapu. We became fast friends having all come from the world and now enjoying a new life in Christ.
Chief Chief was a man so full of life and he inspired us to reach for greater heights. We loved his unshakable faith in Jesus Christ and his unshakable belief that with Him all things are possible. We have enjoyed fellowship together both in Nigeria and the USA and we have been part of each other’s lives since becoming friends.
We pray that God will uphold Aunty Ronke (Mummy Chief), the children and grandchildren and comfort them.
Chief Chief, you will be greatly missed but we thank God for your life and the legacy you left behind. We are comforted by knowing that you are resting in the bosom of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Rest in perfect peace Chief Chief.

“Our walk through life is all too brief. And in that walk, most of us search for those beautiful gifts that life has to offer. One of those gifts was Brother Ayoola Oso”.
He was a giant with a gentle and tender heart. You cannot come around him without knowing that he was a believer. There was never a dull moment when around him. He interacts with people at their different levels regardless of age.
We thought of you today, but that is nothing new
We thought about you yesterday and days before that too
We think of you in silence, we often speak your name
Now all we have are memories, and your picture in a frame
Your memory is our keepsake, with which we’ll never part
God has you in His keeping; we have you in our heart.
Sleep on Brother.

He was a loving husband to Mama Lola and gave her a peaceful and happy marital life as a man of faith. I do not have any shadow of doubt that he died in Christ. I pray for the comfort of the Holy Spirit on his dear family.
Peacefully rest in the bosom of your Lord and Saviour.

Isaiah 57:1-2(NLT)

Good people pass away; the godly often die before their time but no one seem to care or wonder why. No one seems to understand that God is protecting from the evil to come. For those who follow godly paths will rest in peace when they die.

I take consolation in this scripture knowing that you are in the bosom of your maker who loves you more than we do.

Daddy Chief, you are a role model, a good example of a child of God and a good father. Thank you for carrying the burden of Fatherhood when others were no where to be found. My siblings and I are graduates today because of you. Thank you Daddy.
Whenever my Mum looked back. She always saw you. Who will take over? What a big question. You are irreplaceable.

Thank you for showing us the way to the RCCG in which we are established today.

Thank you for calming Mum down when she said I can't marry 'ibo' . Its been 20 years now and we are getting stronger.

I will Miss you greatly.

Chief Osho lived an exemplary life. He was a truly dedicated husband and father—inseparable from his wife and extremely supportive of the education of his children. He was very religious, humble, warm, welcoming, accommodating, and generous. He was a man of a very high integrity. I was expecting to see him and his wife soon and hoping to schedule our usual breakfast or brunch. We propose but the Lord disposes. I am still in shock but i believe that you are now in the good hands of the Lord who sent you here and decided to call you home. May you rest in peace and may the Lord continue to support your family and continue to keep them united.

I was a CoSec on one of the boards Chief Chief was serving. He was always the life of that board. His smile and jokes would calm the atmosphere when everywhere was tensed.
He will surely be missed and I'm sure that board will miss his jovial presence too. He was very accessible and didn't discriminate anyone.

Continue to rest in paradise, Chief Oso, till we meet on the last day.

Uncle Ayo is my Mom,'s younger brother . I grew up calling him Boda Ayo.He loved his siblings and cared for them. He was very kind hearted, generous and easy to relate with. I remember vividly when I finished NYSC and came to Lagos in 1988/89 looking for a job. Anytime I visited his office @ Apapa, he was always encouraging me and ready to assist in anyway. I thank God for a life well spent. Good night dear Uncle, see you on the resurrection morning.
