Cpl. Sean Stokes of Lake of the Pines, Calif., was a 2001 graduate of Bear River High School where he was a linebacker for Bear River, playing football for the freshman, junior varsity and varsity teams. He was honored by his alma mater as they retired his football jersey. He joined the Marines less than a month after Sept. 11, 2001. The quiet and retrospective young man took being a Marine very seriously. While still a private in the Marines, he was featured in a History Channel documentary called "Shootout: Fallujah." Military historian Patrick O'Donnell also wrote about Stokes in this 2006 book, "We Were One: Shoulder to Shoulder With the Marines Who Took Fallujah." Sean was a straightforward guy and always wanted to do the right thing. In addition to three Purple Hearts, Stokes received the Combat Action Ribbon, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the Global War on Terrorism Expedition Medal and other awards. Sean was awarded the Silver Star Medal for Gallantry and Bravery in November 2007. He was on his fourth tour when he died from wounds suffered while conducting combat operations in Al Anbar province, Iraq at age 24. Walton's Family of Funeral Homes
