A LIFE WELL LIVED

A Time to be Born

She served in several roles which included Sabbath School Superintendent, Head Church Clerk, AYS Leader and much more. She continued to serve even in her illness.

A Time to be Educated
Shelia was educated in the Birmingham City School System where she attended Powderly Elementary and was a proud member of the Wenonah High School class of 1975, as she skipped the 12th grade. She went on to attend Talladega College where she became a proud member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. She graduated Talladega College in 1979. She obtained her Master’s Degree in Elementary Education, and an Educational Specialist Degree in Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Shelia was a faithful educator who touched many lives for 33 plus years serving 14 of those years at the Alabama State Department of Education with the Alabama Math, Science and Technology Initiative (AMSTI) as an Education Specialist and an Education Administrator until retiring in August of 2018.

A Time to Love
In June of 1980, she was united in Holy Matrimony to Larry Dean Patterson, who preceded her in death. To this union was born one daughter, Rajeeni Larisa Patterson.

Just sitting here thinking about you Sheila. You have been gone 4 years now, but memories of you linger in my mind and heart.  Sheila, you were such a friendly and genuine person. You always called my sister and brother - sisters and brother when we all worked on our administrative certification at UAB. I know that you are resting easy now. I keep in contact with your daughter. Love ya my dear friend. Rest Easy!

What can I say? You were an educator in every aspect of the profession. You were an encourager to everyone in your path. You were my cheerleader from the first day that we met at Birmingham City Schools. I thank God for sharing you with me on this side of Heaven.

Sis Shelia and I go back over thirty years of my career ! I did my observations in her class at Ramsay High School ! We had  great professional relationship with her while sne worked at Jackson Olin High School and Easley High School! We took EDT Classes at UAB ! I had the pleasure of teaching Rajenni at Ramsay High ! I taught her geometry and Calculus ! She met Tod Beers at the State Department of Education ! Tod taught with Shelia at Ensley High ! She gave many unappreciated Educators a chance to show case their Math talent at AMSTI ! The politics at Birmingham City Schools was not good for unconnected Educators of good integrity ! She helped me(Jesse Kelley ) become a Mathematics Specialist ! She encouraged me to step out on faith, and show other Math Specialists Birmingham had some great Educactor’s who where stuck in the classroom and not given a chance to fly! Sis  Shelia gave other educators a chance to fly at the State Department of Education such as Dr.Pam Williams and  Dr. Tonya Anthony ! I can go on  and on about Shelia’s grace and fortitude ! She has her wings now , may God bless her surviving family !           Love ❤️ Jesse Kelle
