The Good Old Days

July 5, 2018

Sheryl was just another sibling to my family.  Growing up she was always at our house where she felt loved, safe and accepted.  She lived with her mom and step-dad down the street and her grandparents lived next door to us.  She was closer to my sister until my sister started dating her now-husband.  After that we became best friends and were inseparable.   I remember the fun times and the sad times.  Sheryl hid a lot of pain inside and struggled with events that happened from "trusted" adults.  She would always appear upbeat even through these memories tore at her.   We shared with each other, things we were afraid to tell others, personal things that were sometimes painful.  But it wasn't all sad times.  There was a lot of fun.  And I mean a lot of fun!  We would often go see the midnight showing of The Rocky Horror Picture Show when we were in high school.   We knew the words to every song of that movie and enjoyed participating with the audience (anyone who has ever been to this movie will understand that).  We went to movies and parties but mostly would just hang out together, usually getting into some kind of mischief.   We especially loved driving around with Pat Benitar blaring out the car windows.  Unfortunately our lives went in different directions for reasons I won't go into here as they are sad for me and ended with the loss of my best friend.   I couldn't save my friend from the things that took a grip on her and wouldn't let go.  I've always missed my friend but am glad she found her way out and into a new life where she helped people (as she loved to do).  I am saddened to hear of her passing; may she rest in peace now that no one can hurt, abuse, or use her ever again.  The struggles in her life have been taken away and she is in the loving arms of our Lord.  I'll see you on the flip side Sheryl.
