It is not how long that matters. It is how well! Shirley lived a well balanced life. She radiated love and touched so many lives. She was very accommodating and always ready to open her doors even to strangers. We exchanged visits so many times, and each time was fun unlimited with Shirley being the life of the party. The legacy of Iya Aafin Shirley Awofeso lives on forever.

Dear Aunty Shirley,

If we could only have you here longer. Although we have no answers, we take solace in the fact that you are now resting in the bosom of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Thank you for opening your doors to my siblings and I and always making us feel at home. Thank you for always being there for us.
We will forever miss your beautiful smile.

Sleep well Aunty!

Absent in body, but in the presence of Our Heavenly Father. Condolences to my extended family.
Each time I looked at your beautiful adorned face and body on FB Shirley, I saw your Mother’s face. How I cherished the childhood visits and memories of years ago.
Love to all.

May the entire Awofeso family--Brother Tony, their daughters, grandchildren, and the extended family--find peace in their loving memories of my dear sister Shirley Awofeso. She had a kind and gentle spirit during every encounter I had with her.

Rest in divine glory, peace, and power Sister Shirley Awofeso.

A Mrs Shirley Awefeso, a woman with a big heart, a big contagious smile embraced me in a short period of time as a daughter. I was privileged to attend the event where Daddy Awefeso was honored by the city officials of Appleton, Wisconsin. The few conversations I had with the couple were very meaningful to me. I learned of the accomplishments she and her husband contributed to the fox cities. As a new comer to Appleton, this gave me hope to also see ways in which I can be a contributor in the area. As she and her husband were getting ready for the move to Texas, Daddy called me to the house and asked me to get whatever I wanted . This marked me dearly. I will forever engrave her in my heart. Rest in eternal peace Queen Mother. May God comfort your husband, children, and family. Sincere condolences to the entire family. Heaven gained a great angel. Keeping the family in prayers.

Shirley Awofeso, my sister, my friend and my confidant!

The news of your passing dealt a heavy blow on me, my family and many others. If tears could bring you back, we would cry many tears. The last conversation you and I had about me visiting you and Tony in Texas is never going to happen.

I will miss you. Appleton will miss you. We will miss your smile and your unique fashion. We will miss your kindness, to us and our children, grandchildren and community. I remember the time I suffered from Pneumonia, you and Tony brought me homemade soup from Appleton to Green Bay and a nice fuzzy blanket and other goodies. You and Tony were present at both of my son’s weddings and played very important uncle and aunty roles. You always embraced all our children, grand children and your door was always open to all.

Shirley, we will miss you, we will miss your uplifting smile and your soft, gentle spirit. You will forever be in our memory.

Sleep on, and rest in peace.

I was greatly saddened to learn through my friend, Adebukoye Adenle, about the death of your dearest wife, Shirley (Mama Nike). My thoughts are with you and the family at this trying period. Aunty Shirley,
Thank you for helping to make Appleton a home away from home. For being there to celebrate my graduation, wedding, and the birth of my children. Each day you shared your joy and light with so many. I am a better person, wife, and mother because of your example. I will miss you, your warm smile, and infectious laughter but your legacy lives on in all the lives you have touched.

Aunty Shirley,

You exemplified the title Aunty in our community; serving as a pillar for all those around you especially the younger generations.  Always ready to listen without judgement, guide, support and cheer us on.

You and by extension your home with Uncle Tony have always been a welcome space for everyone who crossed your path. Sharing not just your space, great food etc but more importantly your company, your time and presence.  Your smile, sense of style, love for bright colors and bling exuded life and love and wrapped us in warmth.

Thank you for being there for me especially through diagnosis and treatment for a major illness. You had walked that path so you understood and would share tips and encourage me. You gave me hope that I too would get through it.  Since then, I fondly refer to you as one of my angels on earth. You have gained your wings and Heaven’s gain is our loss.

The parting has left an irreplaceable gap in our hearts but I am so thankful that I was blessed with the opportunity to have you as my aunty.

Mama Nike as she was fondly called was a peace loving woman. Always smiling and ever ready to help. Her home with Uncle Tony was a place of refuge for all students especially those of Nigerian descent. Her care packs for them was second to none.

We loved to dine with the Awofesos because we were assured of Mama Nike providing plenty to eat and drink; lots of games to play.

In our time of need, Mama Nike (and Uncle Tony ) did not hesitate to provide support. Sometimes this was at a cost to them personally. We appreciate those times beyond what words can say.

Mama Nike was a fashionista. Her Nigerian dress sense was inspirational. Yejide borrowed from mama Nike her creative twist in adorning her Gele. Beautiful. Whenever she steps out , mama Nike was a beauty to behold.

We will miss Mama Nike.♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️

Your physical being may have left this earth but your spirit lives on in each of your children, grandchildren but most of all through Tony and Myrtle. God called you home because He needs more warriors to carry his banner in these evil time.

To the family don't be sad, Shirley is proud and is smiling at her legacy. Each of you have lived and create your own memories of Shirley to pass on to other family members and friends. She was loved in Seattle, Wisconsin, Louisiana and Africa. Your Queen lives on in each and everyone of you. Shirley, rest God has your family during this time of sadness and one day knowing you will all be united again. Love from the Hobbs -Alvine family in Seattle.

My Darling Aunt Shirley,

Friend, Aunt, Sister and Mother to all who knocked at her door. With a sweet and gentle smile she always open her door to all with no discrimination. Aunt Shirley, you will forever be missed. With tear and joy, I remember your contributions to my wedding, the sugar and oatmeal cookies you periodically sent me not to mention my school supplies during my masters at Tulane. I tried to find a word to describe you but the following came to mind, Woman of Grace, Joy, Peace Maker, Fashionista, Delightful, Radiant, and most especially HEART ♥️ OF GOLD
LOVE YOU AND REST IN PEACE

Shirley Awofeso (Mama Nike) was a virtue woman. The woman I came to know through her husband in the year 2000 when I came to Appleton, Wisconsin to start my job with Gulfstream Aerospace, a subsidiary company of General Dynamics. To begin the short story, Mama Nike (Shirley) was the epitome of how I successfully raised my four children in Appleton. When I became United States Citizen in 2004, it was Shirley’s family with her husband, Tony Awofeso that stood with me at the Naturalization (Citizenship) ceremony in Milwaukee as representatives of my family. Shirley Awofeso unconditionally took care of my children as a mother as three of my kids were female. My children were under 18 years when they joined me in the States and if not for Shirley Awofeso, it would have been very difficult to raise and pamper them. For this short story of me, Shirley Awofeso will be greatly missed. Shirley was very outstanding in faith and in multicultural activities. As a member and pioneer of African Heritage Inc. her genuinely service to the organization was highly remarkable and the legacy she left behind will forever be remembered.
Now that the cold hands of death has snatched the woman who was part of my success story, what else do I want to say rather than to remember that ‘a life beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered’.
May the Lord Almighty comfort, abide and strengthen the husband, Chief Otunba Tony Awofeso and the entire family.
May the departed soul continue to Rest In Peace.
Adieu,
Prince Adebukoye Alade Adenle
Appleton, Wisconsin, USA.
