Shirley Horgan’s Life 1923-2021

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Shirley E. Horgan, age 97 yeas. She died March 30,2021.

Shirley was born at St. Joseph’s Hospital on December 25, 1923 in Stockton, California. She came from  pioneering stock. Her Great- Grandfather Robert Givens, of Kentucky, came for the Gold Rush of 1849 and settled in Mariposa, California.

Shirley came to Modesto, as a little girl, living on Magnolia Ave.
She ushered at the State Theater and was also a teller at the downtown branch of Wells Fargo Bank.

Shirley was a member of the Greatest Generation. After December 7, 1941, she and a group of friends, manned fire towers on Paradise Avenue looking for enemy planes coming into California.

Shirley and Maurice R, Horgan were married on September 29, 1946.

Shirley was involved in PTA, Cub Scouts, Job’s Daughters, DeMolay International, and all sorts of sport events her son Richard participated in.

Shirley was predeceased by her parents Zila Wear and Horace S. Nichols and her husband Maurice who died June 24, 2011.

Left to cherish our memories of vacations at Disneyland, Yosemite Valley, going to several National Parks in the Western States, summers in Twain Harte, and Sunday dinners with Grandmothers and Cousins are her daughter Eileen E. Horgan (Dale Tolene), of Fort Ann,NY, and her son Richard S.Horgan (Robin) of Santa Rosa,CA. She had five grandchildren, Stefanie Moser (Alan Pursell) of Oakland,CA, Nicolas A.Orsini III (Marguerite) of Glen Falls,NY, Josephine E. Orsini of Astoria,NY, Justin Horgan of Santa Rosa,CA, and Grant Horgan, also of Santa Rosa.

Shirley is also survived by her beloved Great Grandson Patrick Pursell of Oakland,CA.

Franklin and Downs Chapel assisted our family.

Burial was private in the time of the pandemic.

We wish to thank most sincerely the excellent care, kindness, and affection shown our Mother/Grandmother by the members of the staff at Dale Commons and the members of the staff of Lifeguard Hospice and Home Care.
