Professor Shu Geng was born in Chongqing, China in a family from the ancestral village of Xinji in Hebei Province, on September 3rd, 1942, and returned to Christ on January 1, 2018.  He was loving husband of Hai-yen Carolyn Geng; dedicated father of Joy Jia Geng (Craig Mills) and Elvin Hsing Geng (Kim Thuy Seelinger); adoring grandfather of Nathan Xin (11) and Clara An Geng (7) Mills and Kaien Thuy Geng (4); beloved brother of Hsiuying, Guangshen and Guangqun (Roy) Geng; and attentive son of late Geng Meichang and Hou Shuokuei.  After growing up in Taiwan and attending National Taiwan University, he obtained a PhD in Statistics at Kansas State University in 1972.   For over three decades, he was as a Professor in the Department of Plant Sciences at UC Davis, and served as Associate Dean of the College of Agriculture for three years during that time.  After retiring from University of California as Emeritus Professor in 2010, he dedicated his efforts to education, training, and scholarship in China, where he was founding Dean of the Peking University Graduate School of Environment and Urban Studies in Shenzhen as well as founding Director of the Sino-US Food Safety Research Center in Northwest Agriculture & Forestry University.  He was an accomplished scholar, elected to both the American Society of Agronomy and American Association for the Advancement of Science.  As a scientist, he made crucial contributions to to quantitative genetics, climate change modeling, sustainable agriculture, as well as food security and safety, many of which influenced policy and led to improvements in global food production and security. As a teacher and mentor he both fostered individual careers as well as forged institutional bridges between UC Davis and numerous Chinese universities that enriched a generation of students.  Shu Geng was a devoted Christian.  He was a member and deacon of the Davis Chinese Christian Church from its earliest days, nurtured Christian fellowship in his home for over thirty years, and brought many comfort through ministry.  As a husband, father, scholar, educator and counsellor, he lifted up countless loved ones, students, colleagues and friends.  Today, we are saying goodbye too, too early. But while we grieve, we remember and thank Lord Jesus that during his life, he walked the road of his choosing with vigor, compassion, and generosity until the day he returned to Christ.  He was beloved by, and an inspiration to, so many around the world. He will be dearly and deeply missed.
