17th Posthumous Birthday Tribute

October 2, 2018

It is October 2!

Happy 17th posthumous birthday Daddy!!! You were our best.

An embodiment of love, a great inspirer, encourager and selfless to the core! You were a great friend, lover and the best husband for our Mum. My first mentor, adviser, confidante and cheerleader, you never ceased to extol the good in people. You had a special name for all of your loved ones. You were the one who valued relationships and family above all else. You knew your relatives to the fourth and fifth generation.

Your intelligence and love for education earned you such academic accolades bagging all three (3) degrees on scholarship from University of Lagos, Nigeria to University of Birmingham, United Kingdom to George Washington University, United States. You were the quintessential orator, speech writer and grammar king! Little wonder your name is inscribed in the makers and shapers document - The Who is Who of Nigeria.

Your friends called you JOMO, your circle knew you as LUGARD. I remember wondering as a young child why Lugard since it was not part of your names, you earned it as a result of your intelligence and inspiring nature from a very young age.

You welcomed our friends home, encouraging and advising them on youth  and life matters, career choices and living the godly way. Your impact in their lives left an indelible mark as many testify that your influence and advice helped shape who they have become... Thank you Daddy.

You were never one to shy from speaking up in the face of wrongdoings but you corrected in and with love always. You spoke up to people in places of authority always admonishing on doing right by God and men. Yes, even in church hierarchy, you always spoke up defending the faith you loved and practiced so much, a quality many came to love and respect in you.

You were an astute administrator who rose to the peak of his career. Your years of serving your state and country was identified and marked with respect. You were a detribalized administrator never putting race, religion, discrimination over choosing those who qualified, giving everyone an equal opportunity to excel.

Your love for your siblings and relatives was phenomenal. You were the great glue that kept the knot together. You mediated over young and old. Giving counsel and advise even when it was not appreciated. God's gift of wisdom on you was exceptional and you used it wisely. I thank God for you Daddy!

Your love for children was so beautiful. You were Big Daddy to all the neighbors' children, how they loved to sit around you and you never ceased to have a gift for all -biscuits, chocolates, groundnuts etc.. Your children were your most prized and precious gifts from God and you showed it not only with words but in all you did, always willing to sacrifice at all times. We love you Daddy! If I had to do life again and choose where to be born, you know it will be with you and through you. I'm eternally grateful for the memories we created, beautiful they were, challenging times shared, struggles and sufferings endured. You are the best and you remain Daddy dearest, Paddyman, Daddy forever.

Thank you Daddy for loving each of us as we are, knowing each child is specially gifted in different ways. You took pride in each child,  celebrating our uniqueness, nurturing us with love, harmonising the similarities we share and the differences in us; allowing us to be so we can know! You are truly the best Daddy.

Today, I celebrate you Daddy dearest, I celebrate the day you were born, I choose to celebrate the man you were, I celebrate because you loved to celebrate not just people but your birthday. You taught us the importance of loving oneself. I know if celebrations are held in Heaven, then you are surely celebrating today, having a party no matter how small, as you always did while here on earth. Heaven celebrates you Daddy, so I will keep on this tradition of celebrating you.

Today, as you look down from Heaven, say a prayer of blessing for us. You have become our guardian angel. Join the host of Heaven and our Guardian Angels to say a special blessing for us today.

We love you Daddy dearest, my Paddyman, my Daddy forever. Happy posthumous birthday my one and only Daddy!!!
