To every soul, death is said to be the ultimate end, but to a few, death marks the birth of a new beginning.

Oga, your footprints are too large and deep to be erased, thus, your passage cannot be an end but a new beginning through your work(s) imparted into the lives of many, like myself.

You encouraged me to believe in Me by entrusting me with huge responsibilities. You let go of what your colleagues would guard with their lives and debunked my belief that certain heights in legal practice were the birth rights of a minority few. Though brief, I learnt the rudiments of legal practice and gained my courtroom confidence from you. You were simply of a different specie amongst your calibre of legal practioners.

O death, where's they sting? O grave, where's they victory?

All good things they say, must come to an end. You came and walked on the sands of time and there, you left your footprints. Though you have bowed out, your legacy will remain forever!

Onward soldier matching! Journey on to the mark of a higher calling, till we meet to part no more...

Goodnight sir.

TRIBUTE TO A GREAT FRIEND AND LEGAL ICON

I find it difficult to know where to start my tribute to a man I met only 13 months ago, who left an indelible mark on my heart. First thing I noticed was his love for God and his profession. I witnessed his argument in the High court and will never forget that faithful day at the court room and how almost everyone applauded his defence. May God Almighty grant his kind soul peaceful repose and comfort his dear family and friends that he left behind.

Rest On My Dear Brother!!!

I really find it unbelievable that you’re gone, I never imagined you’d be gone so soon. I remember the first time I came to intern, I was so nervous and lacked confidence in myself, I never believed I would fit in but having the very first conversation with you gave me reassurance. You gave me confidence, made me feel I was good enough, you never for once overlooked my efforts, you made me feel like I fit in perfectly.

You praised my legal opinions like they were excellent, you corrected me in subtle manners. I felt capable and extremely confident and it was all because of you. You were more than just a boss to me, you are an inspiration to me, you illuminated my path, you never looked down on me and kept motivating me to do better.

The more you praised my works, the more I yearned for those praises and that was my biggest motivation. Thank you very much for all you’ve done, I definitely cannot forget you as you’ll forever be in my heart.

I feel very lucky to have met you, the world is extremely lucky to have met you, I know you’re in a better place. We love you but God loves you more.

Rest In Peace sir

I interned at your firm for 3 consecutive years and I can say you impacted me so much and I'm glad I had the privilege of meeting you.
The very first time I met you, you spoke to me in a very friendly manner even though I was scared.
You were a great man and a motivator. You definitely carved your name on hearts, not tombstones. May your gentle soul Rest In Perfect Peace

Tribute to my boss, one of my mentors and a father figure.

I never knew this day would come quicker than expected. I came to Lagos as a corp member with a desire to serve in a law firm where I can learn and metamorphose into one of the best legal minds in the world. I wondered about at a couple of places before I came in contact with your firm.

Immediately I stepped in, the ambience, the welcome and after staring at the course list for the week and seeing several matter in different courts up till the Supreme Court, I was certain that this is the place for me.

You took me in and was personally interested in my growth. You’d ask after my welfare, accommodation and general well-being. You never played the ethnic card with me and retained me after service purely on merits despite not being from your tribe.

Your hardworking spirit was very infectious. You were the boss but yet you’ll stay and work with us into the late nights thereby leading by example. You always remind us that we cannot be successful without hardwork.

I remember having my first case file “Garnishee” few days after joining and once I came back, I gave you a report of the case and you congratulated me and encouraged me.

Your influence over my career cannot be over emphasized. My writing font, font size and style of writing my briefs, written addresses, originating processes and other court processes are all inherited from you. What about my style of arguments in court ? It’s also adopted from you. I am the legal practitioner I am today because of you.

Another thing most people don’t know about you is that you were a philanthropist. You sacrificed your personal comfort for others to prosper. You financed the education of so many and was instrumental in their very success while helping and touching the lives of different families

Your death a great loss to the legal profession and the society at large. I know you’re in a better place and God will surely crown your efforts. I know you’ll wish to continue with practice in the world beyond because that was all you knew. In your words “law is call to serve”.

Rest In Peace Sir Bonajo Badejo S.A.N till we meet to part no more.

LEGEND !!!!!!!

*My Experience with Sir Jadegoke Adebonajo Badejo SAN.*

Let me start by saying that I would not have been in private legal practice but for the Almighty God and my first principal, Sir Jadegoke Adebonajo Badejo SAN.

Our paths crossed by fate or what I can also describe as destiny.

It was on Monday 15th November 1993.
I was posted to Lagos State for the mandatory National Youth Service.

While in the university and at the law school, I always had the ambition of working in a bank's or a multinational oil company's legal department where I hoped to rise to the post of Company Secretary before retirement.
Hmmm...if wishes were horses as all attempts by me to be posted to a bank's headquarters (now defunct ) situate on Marina street, Lagos Island failed because the South-West states had filled their quota at the Bank (which was then owned by the Federal Government). I
was again posted to a multi-national oil company, the same scenario occurred: No Vacancy.

I thereafter went to meet an official of NYSC who told me frankly that all available spaces in banks or companies had been taken and that the only spaces available were few law firms and the Lagos State Ministry of Justice.
He asked me to look through all the applications of the law firms and there I saw Bonajo Badejo & Co's request for a Corp member.
What attracted me was the design of the letter head of Bonajo Badejo & Co. ( I still use the concept till date)
While other law firms used Olympia typewriters or electronic typewriters, Bonajo Badejo & Co's letter was produced by computer.
I reluctantly pleaded with the officer to post me to the law firm of Bonajo Badejo & Co.

The next day, Tuesday 16th November 1993, I was already at law firm, then situate at No. 2, Odeku Close, off Adeniran Ogunsanya, Surulere, Lagos to submit my NYSC letter.
There, I met the then Mr. Badejo, the Principal partner of the firm.

He gave me a wonderful reception with directive to resume immediately and gave me a file to study and appear the next day at the Ogun State High Court, Ota Judicial Division to argue against an application for an interlocutory injunction.
In his words: "You are now a lawyer, your age at the bar is immaterial, you can do what SAN can do."
I was tutored on how to announce my appearance and oppose the application on the ground that an interlocutory injunction could not be granted against a completed act.

The next day I was in Ota appearing before Hon. Justice Bakre ( father of Hon. Justice Demola Bakre).
The opposing counsel was late Chief Adesina (the then Bamofin of Egba).

At the end of the hearing, the court gave a bench ruling dismissing the application for an injunction on the ground that it was a completed act and ordered for accelerated hearing.
That was the beginning of my sojourn in Legal practice.

By the end of my service year in 1994, I had appeared and conducted hearings in all courts including the Supreme Court.
My passion for advocacy had developed so well that I never thought of any other thing to do than private legal practice.

After my relocation to Ibadan, Oga Bonajo was always in constant communication to enquire about my welfare and practice.
I shall never forget his words of encouragement during our last discussions.
He asked me not to give up on my ambition and that he would rejoice with me very soon. Unfortunately, his time on earth was up before he could merry with me.
It was sooo sudden.
In his lifetime , Oga Badejo was an advocate per excellence, a complete gentleman, well organised, very diligent and highly cerebral.
The legal profession has indeed lost a rare gem.
May the Lord comfort us all .
May he find favour before the Lord. Amen.

Sleep well my boss.

I am deeply shattered by the untimely passing of my dearest friend and brother, Bonajo Badejo.

Bonajo and I have known each other for almost 4 decades. We first met back in 1983 when he became the legal support for Stallion Group, he taught me the law and was apart of the solid foundation of the company from the last 37 years. He introduced me to many people and always made me feel supported and comfortable.

As years went by we would continue to meet often as friends and for work. I have fond memories of Badejo attending my wedding in 1988 and we continued to be apart of many milestones for each other. The business relationship we once shared in our youth evolved in to a lifelong friendship. We would meet all over the world and continued to make beautiful memories together, most recently in Abudhabhi and London.

Bonajo Badejo was a very highly respected, hard-working, honest, loyal, generous, kind, peace maker and helpful man. He was a great Legend when it came to his passion - law, he was exceptional at his work and I am honoured to have worked with him. He could effortlessly find a needle in a haystack and would be able to win our cases all the way to the Supreme Court.

My dearest friend & brother may your kind and gentle soul Rest in Peace. You will truly be missed and never forgotten. My deepest condolences to his family, friends, partners and associates. RIP. Om Shanti Shanti

"We are all born weak and helpless. All lead the same short, troubled life.
We grow and wither as quickly as flowers; we disappear like shadows." Job 14:1-2 (GNB).
The news of your demise came to me so shocking that I sat down and think and rethink of what this world is and what it meant to some who think they can have their way and do anything just to get what they wanted. Life they say it's a teacher, the more we live, the more we learn.
I met with you for the first time when you attended the Juvenile Harvest of the United African Methodist Church Eleja Cathedral 17, Jebba Street Ebute-Metta (west) Lagos as one of our special guest in 2007, you came in through the right door and the Principle Harvest Secretary Elder A A Adefuwa introduced you and you came forward for a prayer, it was not long that you became one of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
Ever since then I lost your contact and we later met on Facebook four months ago before your demise. Who are we to question the authority of the Almighty God, "He gives and He takes, glory be to His Holy name". You presented yourself a good ambassador of Methodist Church Nigeria, you were a man of the people, you stood for what is right and you fight the course of justice. Though our hearts are heavy, but we took solence in the words of wisdom of Solomon chapter four verses seven to nine (4:7-9) " Rightoues people, however, will find rest, even if they die young. We honour old age, but because a person has lived a long time. Wisdom and righteousness are signs of the maturity that should come with old age" (GNB). You have I deed fought the good fight of faith and you have kept the faith.
We pray for your wife and children, that Christ Jesus will comfort them and grant them grace to bear this loss, sleep on dear brother and take thy rest, till we meet to part no more. May your gentle soul rest in peace amen.

His Eminence, The Most Rev'd Joseph Adedayo Ojaoba.

‘’His life was gentle, and the elements

So mix’d in him that Nature might stand up

And say to all the world, This was a man!’’

- William Shakespeare.

You called me the night before your demise to discuss a matter of mutual interest and we agreed to see the next day. On that fateful morning as it was our usual practice, I called to confirm whether our meeting will hold as scheduled but you didn’t pick. Unknown to me, that was a call you were never going to return. It was your unique way of saying goodbye. You were my mentor, my brother and most importantly, and despite the age disparity-my friend in the loftiest sense of the word.

Adieu to an erudite lawyer and a quintessential gentleman. Your calm mien was beyond compare. You were Incredibly meticulous, conscientious , assiduous and charitable. Your integrity and sincerity were impeccable and unassailable. These qualities and much more defined your
person.

Good night Sir Bonajo Badejo SAN.

Peace! Perfect Peace!!

News of your demise came to us as a shock; we are yet to recover ....

With the deepest and humble heart, but in total submission to the will of Almighty God, the General Overseer, Rt. Rev. Dr. (Pro). Oluwademilade Akpata, Governing Council and the entire membership of Divine Ewulomi Evangelical Church of Christ (C&S) commiserate with the family and chamber on the passage to glory of our own and lovable friend and legal counsel.

Without any doubt, his death is a big loss to the family, chamber, Methodist Church Nigeria and us very importantly at this time.
His demise has created a big vacuum to all sundry but to the glory of God, we believe that having served God dutifully and humanity whilst on earth, that he has gone to rest in the blossom of his creator.

'.... the Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised' - Job 1 : 21

Just as 1 Thessalonians 4 : 13 - 14 rightly say 'But i do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus".

Indeed, we cannot over emphasis Sir Jadegoke Adebonajo Badejo SAN. FCIArb. contributions towards the growth of our Church professionally (Legal Counsel) and representations which brought about great and tremendous transformation to our case.

We will miss you greatly!

Rest in the blossom of the Lord.

So sad to learn of his demise. I met Mr Bonajo Badejo SAN a little over 15 years ago when my office and his had to handle a very knotty matter. What struck him about him was his pleasant manners and friendliness. He was a hard worker. Despite his apparent success in the profession, he was so respectful to seniors and never looked down on some of us that were juniors to him. We struck a friendship from that time. Whenever he was in Abuja, he was never too busy to check on me in the office just to say hello. Brother silk, you were a great friend, and a dependable brother. A good man in every sense of the word has departed. May God's light perpetually shine on you. Requescat in pace .

TRIBUTE TO JADEGOKE ADEBONAJO BADEJO, SAN

Mr. Badejo, SAN was not only an exceptional SAN, he was also an exceptional personality. I was privilege to know him about two years ago when I worked with me in a joint brief we were prosecuting for a Client as Claimant against a Bank in a Share Trading Facility dispute pending before the Lagos State High Court. The learned SAN was leading me in the case and his dedication to the case enable us to conclude the trial before the covid-19 lock down. Our last communication was on the 21st of April, 2020 when we settled the first draft of the Claimant’s Final Written Address while awaiting the Defendant’s Final Address which is still yet to be filed. Our plan was to tidy it up once we receive that of the Defendant.

His exceptional personality that will last me my entire life played out during the course of the trial in the aforementioned case. I had an uncommon privilege as a counsel appearing with him when he sought the permission of the Court to hand-over to me the conduct of the proceeding in order for me to lead our last witness in evidence. This was despite the presence of a Senior SAN who was handling the defence. Mr. Badejo, SAN allowed me the uncommon privilege of conducting the proceeding while he was observing and taking vital notes from the Inner Bar.

In subsequent proceedings, he gave me the privilege of cross-examining the Defendant’s two witnesses with a view of taking over midway when I was cross examining the star witness. He eventually allowed me conclude the cross examination without taking over as he was observing and taking vital notes from the Inner Bar. In the legal profession, this is a rare privilege for a junior counsel of just 12 years standing that is being led by an SAN of 10 years ranking and 41 years at the Bar. It is only an exceptional SAN that can extend this rare privilege to a junior counsel.

Mr. Badejo, SAN, will always address me both orally and in writing (SMS) as “my brother”. I often wonder why he does that when he could simply address me as “my son” or “my friend”. He gave me a sense of belonging and pride to behold that will last me my entire life and career in the legal profession. I will forever remain grateful Sir.

I admired and enjoyed the mentorship he offered me in our brief encounter. I will surely miss him in our next Court proceeding. My only consolation is that he lived a good life.

I pray that the Almighty God grant his soul eternal rest in his Kingdom, Amen.

TRIBUTE TO SIR JADEGOKE ADEBONAJO BADEJO S.A.N, FCIArb, KJW.
How do we say goodbye?
In the midst of life, there is death, But oftentimes, though aware of this fact, we always never wish it happened, especially to someone dear to us.
Alas!! The cold hands of death rudely and without notice, snatched a good man, our dear and loving sir JADEGOKE BONAJO BADEJO, SAN KJW, away on Friday the 5th of June 2020.
We lost a gem, Bonajo was a gift to humanity.
Bonajo worked assiduously to maintain the good name our progenitors left behind.
It is an understatement to say he lived a life fullest... helping all and sundry.
Despite his fame, achievements, professional recognitions and awards in the society and the church, he remained humble, respectful and always ready to support and add value to the lives of those in contact with him.
He had a knack of making everyone feel special and important. A very passionate, diligent, dedicated and an exemplary leader.

To our family (Ojutiku), our dear Bona, as he was fondly called, ( Kiniun Kootu), you were a brother, dependable confidant. Solicitor - Advocate per Excellence, Adviser Extra - Ordinaire, trustworthy friend and a jolly good fellow.
We thank him for the love for our family (in it's entirety), his kindness, support and roles played in peaceful resolutions of issues individually and collectively
We thank God for his life of humanity and humaneness.
To these we are eternally grateful.

HIS LEGACIES LIVE ON ...........

He impacted many lives and left his foot prints in the sands of time.
He performed well, but left too soon, leaving a vacuum that will be difficult for our family to fill.

May the memories of his good deeds lighten our burden of this irreparable loss.
Our great loss is heaven's gain.

TRIBUTE TO A FRIEND AND MENTOR

Oga, I woke up to the sad and shocking news on your passing on Saturday morning. For me it was extremely difficult to process, especially as I had just woken up to a dream in which I had met with you and you had kept insisting that I must come back to your office to see you at 9 p.m.

It is so difficult to talk about you now in the past but that we must as that is the way life is, here in one moment, gone in the next. You were without a doubt one of the most observant, attentive and knowledgeable men I have met. Compassionate, generous and humble, with a contagious smile and an infectious laughter. You were a legal luminary, a learned silk with indeed an ocean of knowledge in litigation, a teacher, a friend, a father and a compatriot. Your appearances in court always made life a lot easier for me.

In the past years we worked together as you represented our Company in various matters, I learnt a lot about of patience, courage, resilience and humility from you. I will never forget the resonance of your voice as you kept reminding me that everything would be fine.

You have definitely fought a good fight and I have no doubt that you now rest in the bosom of the Lord. Your exit at this time leaves a great vacuum personally for me as we still have many issues, we were working on to resolve together and I am tempted again to give into doubt. However I take solace and comfort in the infectious and unwavering optimism of your words " Madam, don't worry, everything will be fine".

Oga, even though we love you, God loves you more and He alone knows why he has called you at this time. We pray that your soul will continue to rest in peace and that He will give your family and loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.

The entire team at Cummins Power Generation Nigeria Limited and Gentec Energy Nigeria Limited will definitely miss you.

GOODBYE , TOO SOON.

Still shocked. Still wondering why? Why are the best of us leaving?

Sir Adebonajo Badejo was a real gentleman, a preacher of the Word, a lover of God's work who I first came in close contact with when he was Chairman of a City Wide Crusade Committee organized by the Methodist Church Nigeria. Soft spoken, humble, zealous, down-to-heart, transparent, philanthropist, respectful and God-fearing personality he was.

Deep sense of inadequacy, I feel as I reflect on this life. I can't help thinking that maybe something is about to happen as I wonder why we had to lose this brilliant mind and son of a revered cleric

O God! please take care of the wife and children. Take care of all family members, church members, professional colleagues and friends that he left behind. Help us all to live our lives as people who would give account to you one day. Heaven, may none of us miss in Jesus name. Amen.

Words fail me, Its still hard to accept, I will miss your advice sir, your gentle smile and kind words everytime I visit.
You were like my father and always cared to ask if everything was fine.
you were full of life and extremely hard working, you loved what you do and talked passionately about it.
Heaven has gained an angel but you will be greatly missed.
I pray that you have a peaceful rest and also pray for strength for the loved ones you have left behind.
Rest peacefully Sir.

A mentor like you just left us without any notice but the moments shared can never be forgotten by my Immediate and extended family. All the Academic, Spiritual, Financial, Marital, Social and Political counselling will be put to use. “To the well-organized mind, death is but the next great adventure” J.K. Rowling.

I ran into your arms wide opened in 2009.
I was a baby Lawyer, a green horn with nothing but hopes, aspirations and ambition.

I remember my first meeting with you. It was meant to be a formal interview. You however made it a father-son discussion, taking me through several years into my past and very many years into my future.

You thereafter nurtured me with angelic love and tender care. As a man of great insight, you spotted the light in me, groomed me with excellent spirit and watched me grow into a responsible man, giving me adequate support through it all.

Whenever you reviewed my Briefs and Pleadings, you ended with the remark “This is excellent, Hercules be your speed”.

You gave me so much confidence and comfort that I needed to become a thoroughbred Lawyer. You laid the foundation for my success and the richness of my story.

Every passing day, l drank afresh from your fountain of deep knowledge, critical thinking and robust experience, until 2019 when you celebrated me, treating me to a befitting send-forth.

I have struggled to come to terms with the sad reality of your demise. I should have known that our chat in the last 48 hours was the very last.

I however take solace in the fact that you lived a successful life.
You touched lives.
You raised men.
You served humanity.
You impacted souls
You instilled discipline.
Yours is a well-organized mind.
You left a legacy of honour and your memory shall ever remain very fresh in our minds.

Indeed, you have done well and I have no doubt that your spirit is resting peacefully at the bosom of our Lord.

Adieu my very special Boss, Sir Jadegoke Adebonajo BADEJO, S.A.N.

You were a father to me in many ways. You taught me so many things and it feels like a dream that you are gone.
In your usual style, you bid us good night on Thursday and little did I know that was the final good night you would ever say to me.
The shock is yet to wear off but I believe that God knows best.
Rest in the bossom of the Lord.

Bona, as he was fondly called by friends and associates, was a very good and dependable friend. He would go to any length to defend a friend who had a good cause and most of these he did pro bono. I found it extremely shocking that he could depart us so soon. May his gentle soul rest in peace and may God give his family the fortitude to bear his loss.

My dear senior Bonajo, I am still in shock despite the reality of your departure to meet your creator. To say you will be missed is an understatement, but we shall take solace in God the ultimate Comforter whose Grace will be sufficient for all of us especially your wife, children and the entire Badejo family. Even though I am now called Tayo by everyone, you always choose to call me Latee, my name during our secondary school days. Rest in the bosom of God until we all meet again to part no more. Sunre ooo, Bonajo omo Badejo.

The news of your passing unto glory was shocking. You were a friend in the Lord who always give counsel on the path of progress. You were a committed and dedicated Church officer and leader. You offered yourself for the upliftment and peace of Methodist Church Nigeria. You chaired the constitutional review committee which you presented brilliantly at the special conference held at Hoare's Memorial Methodist Cathedral, Yaba in March 2020. You served as Archdiocesan Lay President of Lagos Archdiocese. You had the dream of having more secondary schools for the Church. You offered your time and resources for God and humanity. Your candid counsel would be greatly missed. Rest on soldier of Christ till the resurrection morning when we shall meet and part no more.

I sat beside you as time keeper at the March constitutional review conference of our church held at Hoare's memorial, to say you displayed your usual brilliance and zeal is an understatement. A soft spoken, quiet achiever but loud committer of time and resources. We have been hit below the belt. May God bless your beautiful and pleasant soul. Great tree that fall and emptied the forest!

  • I had my NYSC primary assignment as a fresh young attorney in his law firm, then headquartered at Surulere. Sir Jadegoke Bonajo Badejo, SAN, gave of himself- his sweat, his finance, his knowledge, his time and much more trying to replicate his good self in us as lawyers and because of him and his acts of benevolence, some finest parts of my modest legal personality and practice is a chip off his legal shoulder. Here was I in 1993,  an Igbo young man, yet, he, a Yoruba man took me under his tutelage without any discrimination.
