Staff Sgt. William Austin Daniel, 33, of Baton Rouge, died Monday Sept. 7, 2009 at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. He was a graduate of LSU Laboratory High School and attended Southeastern Louisiana University. He served in the U.S. Army from Sept. 22, 1997, until Jan. 11, 2000, and in the Louisiana National Guard from Jan. 12, 2000, until Sept. 7, 2009. He also served in Operation Iraqi Freedom with the 256th Infantry Brigade, of Lafayette, from May 15, 2004, through Nov. 5, 2005, for which he was awarded the Combat Infantryman's Badge for engaging with enemy forces as an infantryman. He participated in National Guard response and relief efforts in support of Louisiana residents. Staff Sgt. Daniel was a recipient of numerous military awards and decorations; the most noteworthy of which was the Meritorious Service Medal and Army Commendation Medal (Second Award). Visitation at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St., on Thursday, Sept. 10, was from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Visitation resumes at the funeral home on Friday, Sept. 11, from 8 a.m. until religious service in the chapel at 10 a.m., with the Rev. Robert E. Lee officiating. Interment with military honors in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Survivors include his wife, Jill Evans Daniel; daughter, Anna Lee Daniel; parents, Randal and Alice Daniel; grandmother, Barbara Polk; niece, Stella Daniel; brother, Randy Daniel and wife Gretchen; two sisters, Blake Daniel and Peyton Robertson and husband David; and many beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins. Preceded in death by his grandparents, Austin Dale and Belle West Daniel, Sen. George Ray Lee and Judge William P. Polk.
