Steven Delbert Erickson, age 67, died peacefully on June 22, 2016 after a long battle with his health.  Steve is survived by his sisters Judy (of Juneau) and Kathy (of Dyea), his brother Mike (of Juneau), along with many other loved ones including nieces and nephews as well as his extended family from his late-wife, Jean Jenkins (of Fairbanks). Steve is preceded in death by his parents Delbert “Pete” and Irene Erickson, his sister, Sue Hosford and his wife, Jean.

Born in Auburn, Washington to Pete and Irene, Steve attended Auburn schools. From a very young age, his passion for the outdoors was evident.  He was both an avid hunter and enthusiastic fisherman throughout his life.

In the mid-60’s, Steve’s family moved to Alaska aboard the M/V Irene E in search for “more elbow room”.  They settled in Petersburg where he and his family fished commercially, started a construction company and successfully ran Irene’s Restaurant.

Shortly after moving to Alaska, Steve was called and served proudly in the United States Army and operated as a gunner during the Vietnam War where he was wounded in action. Steve received a Purple Heart as well as a combat infantryman badge for his  sacrifices.

One of his many notable triumphs was Steve’s determination to complete his education and receive a diploma after being discharged from the Army.

Steve held jobs with Alaska Airlines and the Alaska Marine Highway, while often serving as a deckhand on fishing boats. Steve retired out of the Operating Engineers as a heavy equipment operator after years of building roads all across Alaska.  In the mid 80’s Steve met and fell in love with Jean Jenkins.  Together they lived in Fairbanks until Jean’s untimely passing in 2001.

Steve relocated back to Southeast Alaska, and took residence in Juneau to be close to his mom and siblings.

Steve was a loving son, brother and uncle and was a genuine friend to so many.  He will be missed dearly.

A celebration of Steve’s life will take place at the residence of his niece, Desi Tucker in Renton on Sunday, June 26th.  Please call 425-777-0055 for more information.

The family would like to thank all of the caregivers for their dedication to Steve during the past few months. Your support provided him much comfort and happiness. Thank you.

Steve was my neighbor in Juneau for 8 years. In all the years we've been neighbors he never got my name right. He made me giggle every time he said hello to me. His home caught fire one evening and I just happened to get up to get some water and saw fire. I phoned 911 and my husband ran over and pulled him out of the home. We all became very good friends after that. My family and I called him Neighbor Steve. We would often trade subsistence foods with him. He told us many stories and my husband enjoyed helping him around his home so he could hear his stories. My heart goes out to the family. Steve will be missed. Rest in Peace Neighbor Steve. Death breaks into our lives with such force and deprives us of our dear loved ones. The grief that Steven's death has caused is indescribable. No wonder the Bible calls death an enemy. (1 Corinthians 15:26) Jesus tells us to look forward to the time when all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out to a resurrection of life. (John 5:28) Thismis a comforting hope to help sustain you during this difficult time. May the fond memories of Steven comfort you and may God grant you the ability to endure.

All of my life, or at least as long as my memory stretches, Uncle Steve was there like part of the Mount Rushmore of my Daddy's friends. I'm touched to see the memories from others saying the same. We're thankful for his life of kindness and goodness; may his soul rest in God's peace.

Since I was a little girl, my big brother Steve was always watching over me. For the good and the not so good. Just a few days ago he was giving me advice on how to do a few things better.  The memories are now flooding, some sweet, some bittersweet. But all loaded with love and emotion, all loaded with a giggle and a tear. Too many to put here. So many, I will forever save them in my heart. Regardless of the conversation content we had, we always tried to part with a ‘I love you little sis’, generally a big bear hug like only my big brother Steve could do, and ‘God Bless you.’

Today will be a tough day as our family and friends gather to celebrate my big brothers life in his untimely departure. We will laugh and we will cry, but we will leave all knowing that Steve is in a better place, joined by our Dad Pete, our Mom Irene, our Sister Sue and our Niece Heather, and many other loved ones as our loving God takes him home.

I love you big brother. I will have you in my thoughts and prayers, I will cry for you, I will laugh for you, I will remember your advice and I will remember your big bear hugs. I will miss you until the Lord takes me home to be with you. Be at Peace.

To my uncle Steve,

I have lots of memories of you but the most that sticks in my head are those silver  coins you gave to all us kids. I remember you always teasing me.  One time me and you were sharing some crab at grandma's house in Petersburg and I loved that butter. I asked you what kind it was and you said " I can't believe it's not butte"r. That took me 20yrs  to find out what the heck you were talking about haha. I'm thankful for all your wisdom you gave me. It was a blessing to have you as family. Much love uncle Steve may you rest in peace.
