Steve was born November 6, 1952, in Sioux City, IA. He is the first son of nine children born to Harold and Phyllis (Isom) Burns, and was raised on a farm south of Laurel. He earned accolades in high school playing football, basketball, and running track while also participating in regional and state spelling and math bees. Steve graduated from Laurel Public High School in 1971 and attended Gateway Electronics, a technology trade school, in Omaha where he earned a degree in small electronic repair. His fascination with video equipment led to a career as a cameraman and videographer for KMTV 3, a news station in Omaha. Later in life, Steve became the sole proprietor of Video 1 Productions, also in Omaha.

Although a quiet person, Steve led as an example of integrity to the people closest to him. He enjoyed experimenting with small electronics and vehicles, and in his spare time tinkered with televisions, camcorders, and cars for friends and family. Steve was an avid Husker sports fan and at one time was contracted to produce game videos for the Nebraska Cornhuskers Football Program. He was happy to be known as a skilled darts thrower, motorcycle enthusiast, and avid fisherman. Steve loved spending time with family and friends. He was known to throw wonderful Memorial Day parties that would host as many as 200 people at his home for volleyball, basketball, horseshoes, cards; a place where family and friends would laugh late into the night.
