Special Kind of Love for a very Special Person

There is a special kind of love that grandchildren
have for their grandparents!

It is full of respect for their wisdom & accomplishments,
With gratitude for the confidence that they have empowered us with!
With respect for the values that have passed on to us,
With delight in the family stories that they remember & share.

It is a special kind of love built over a lifetime of caring & giving.
It is the kind of love that you have unconditionally shared with us

My boudi's chhordi was my chhordi as well. I met her both in Bangalore and in Alipore Kolkata. I found her to be one of the most caring person in the world. But more than that her life represented to me a life that saw monentous changes in history, so many places from her birthplace in Pahartoli to the nooks and crannies of this vast sub-continent, yet she remained so true to her self in all that she did. Only through Rabindranath Tagore can I truly comprehend the depth of her existence. "Ei kothati mone rekho, tomader ei hashi khelai, ami je gaan geye chilem, mone rekho......"

Ever smiling "Hasmukh" Mashima. So difficult to pay tribute to a person who lightened everybody's woes whosoever came in touch with her. To describe her would mean heaping a lot of superlative phrases. So , in plain and simple terms she was dignity personified , full of grace and charming. Like her great grand children I too am besotted with her. Mashima' your persona is etched in my memory as I am walking through the twilight years of my life. Wherever you are fare thee well.

Greatest great-grandmother. I love her, and her spinach curry. The most prominent memory I have of her, is telling me that I was her favorite child, out of her children, grand-children, and great-grand-children. I was later told, that this was told to everyone, but I refuse to believe that.

How I made Garlic Bread with Dida

June 26, 2021
When I was just about five years old, one of my favourite things to eat was garlic bread whenever we went outside to eat from a pizza place. So after eating so much garlic bread from these pizza places, I suggested to dida  to make garlic bread for afternoon snackand she went along with it. Since cooking was her forte, I believe that I was one of the few privileged who could instruct her to cook and she would indulge me.

First we gathered the ingredients, which were grated cheese, garlic and bread. We gathered the ingredients in one spot and I helped dida to crush the garlic so that it could be in the centre of the bread and the cheese would hide it while it was being melted. It was the noisiest part of the whole process as the steel mortar and pestle clanked every time dida or I crushed the garlic cloves. We had crushed about 5 or six cloves of garlic and then we place them in the bread and then added the cheese on top before grilling it in the microwave for about 2-3 minutes.

After that was done, dida and I sat down to eat our garlic bread but as we took the first bite, realisation stuck that we had not put any butter in the bread and that we had to use a different type of bread because untoasted sliced white bread with cheese and crushed garlic with no seasoning did not taste as good as the ones as I had eaten from pizza places. However, I can say for certain that our combined effort in cooking my garlic bread was far more fulfilling and enjoyable than eating the bland and uninspiring final product.
