My dear mom, Susie
My mom was a tough New Yorker with a soft heart. She had many friends and loved playing Mahjong and cards. She always loved children. She was truly a caregiver. When we were growing up many of the neighbors kids would come to our house. She was a generous and caring person. We weren't poor but, not rich either, but, she would feed everyone.
Her children were her life, she would do anything for them. Often times, I thought she did too much. That was the way she was, she would give up her last, to give to them. She was always close with her nieces and nephews as well. When she had grandchildren they became her pride and joy.
I was just telling a friend the other day about how organized she was with everything. She was a neat freak, nothing was ever out of place. She enjoyed cooking recipes that were handed down from her mother, especially during the holidays. When I make "Jewish" chicken soup, the smell reminds me of her. Mine never taste as good as when she made it. I say it must be the sweetness from love, that made hers so delicious.
She knit beautifully! Her speciality was baby sweater sets. Before I moved away, she made a baby set for me, and said.." I'm making you a baby set in yellow keep it with you, if and when you ever have a baby" I so glad she did, because when Leila came home from the hopital that just what she wore home.
When she became sick with Lung cancer, it was so hard to see this strong woman who took care of everyone; now needing to be cared for herself. It took me a long time to get over her death. It's been 15 years since she passed. I still think and talk about her all the time. I'm sad that Leila never got to meet her . From the time Leila was a baby I would show her photos and tell stories of her . Through this she knows her Grandma Susie and we know she smiling down on her.
When Darin and I moved away from New York in 1993, she told Darin, please take care of "my Robin". Mama, yes he taking good care of me and your grand-daughter Leila too!
We love and miss you; and you will always be a part of our lives forever and always! <3
