Susan Elizabeth (Barr) Wallen, passed away on June 28th, 2019 at the age of 53, after a courageous battle with Appendiceal Cancer. Susan passed at her home in Eagle River, comfortable, without pain with her family close by. Susan was born in Anchorage, AK to Charles and Patsy Barr. She graduated from Scenic Park High School and attended college at the University of Alaska, Anchorage. Susan lived in the Anchorage and Eagle River areas her whole life, married Michael Wallen in 1985 and raised three sons in Anchorage. She spent over 27 years working in the Alaska state government for numerous legislators and community leaders where she met and made lasting impressions on hundreds of people. Susan was very devoted to her family and they were the center of her world. She loved to travel the world with family and friends and shared so many great stories from her adventures. She also enjoyed camping, cooking and gardening. She was an executive board member for the Eagle River Chamber of Commerce and took part in many of the community activities associated with that. Her family and friends will remember her for her incredible sense of humor, beautiful blue eyes, wonderful smile, infectious laugh and her kind and giving nature. She is survived by her husband of 33 years, Michael; her sons and daughter-in-law, Jared and April Wallen, Kyle Wallen and Cameron Wallen; her brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Karyn Barr; her mother-in-law, Virginia Wallen; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. A private family service will be held.

The family kindly requests that you please contribute to this site in her honor with stories, pictures, tributes, things that remind you of her or kind thoughts  (at the top of the page navigate over to the stories section to share memories with a photo). This page will honor her memory and always be up for friends and family to contribute and reflect on in the future, especially after this difficult time.

I sure miss my friend Susie. I am back home in Eagle River and wish I could go see her again. I think she made the world a better place with her bright eyes, big dimpled smile and quick wit. We played Barbies, enjoyed ceramics, and sang songs as loud as we could! We even were in Judo together. She was a great fun bundle of light. Much love to you Susan. I am happy that you were part of my life.

I was thinking of you yesterday and remembering how much I looked forward to having lunch with you! Our lunches always seemed to be at least 2 hours, as we found so many things to talk about and share. You will always be one of the most amazing, special people I had the privilege of knowing and I felt blessed to know you! I miss you, dear friend, not just on your birthday, but at so many different times, when something brings you to mind!

Condolences to the entire Wallen family and to her Juneau work family. Susan was always a ray of light when I'd visit the office or see her walking in the halls of the capitol building. Susan and I didn't know one another particularly well but we'd have a few run ins each year and every time, she'd greet me with a warm smile. As I've reflected on Susan's passing and on those meetings, I think about how she made me feel like we were close, like I was an "insider," that I was trusted. Few people possess the ability to make others feel that way but it came naturally to Susan. She was truly one-of-a-kind and someone I will miss every time I walk into the capitol and onto the fifth floor. I will cherish her memory and her impact. Thank you for allowing us to share our thoughts publicly and I pray for your peace.

Susan was one of the most genuine, amazing women I ever had the privilege of knowing. I enjoyed her friendship for 25 years and always felt blessed to spend time with her and share her life. Mike and the boys were everything to her. She and Mike were so in tune with each other—truly a special couple! It’s hard to think of not getting together with her for a visit or lunch, as those times were always a highlight. She will always be remembered as a truly special person!

To the Wallen Family,
We were absolutely heartsick to learn of Susan’s passing. These last six months sound like they were very difficult and we regret we could not be closer to be of support.
My memories of Susan these last few years were of ultimate grace, upbeat, fun, savvy and … despite the ups and downs, she never let her challenges show. She was an incredible member of the Board of Directors supporting us unconditionally in many areas (especially Bear Paw week) as well as maintaining our strength as an agency. She garnered the support of all who worked with her and her legacy to this community is strong.
I went through our photos and found several… one of Susan as a representative of the board and one enjoying Bear Paw. As always, Susan was lovely and positive presence.
We know you all must be incredibly sad and so we send you peace and love in this time of sorrow.
With much love,
Susie and Jim Gorski

Susan, Susie Q, was my first cousin, our fathers were brothers. My favorite memories of her were from the summer of 1982 and include water skiing behind my Dad's boat, watching "GREASE" over and over and over, she knew every single line of the movie!! She will be greatly missed. GREASE is the word...you're the most, to say the least!!

The love Susan brought to our lives will be forever missed; the website is a beautiful expression and lasting memory to a woman who enriched all of our lives. We were all blessed by her presence and she cared for each of us as part of her extended family.
Words fail to express the loss your family must feel. Please know while not physically present, Susan, and your family are included in my prayers. I pray you find comfort and I know you are surrounded by her love. As I drive down Eagle River Loop and see “Sleeping Lady” coming into view, I always think of Susan and the beautiful person I knew, resting not gone.
Michael, thank you for supporting Susan’s professional life, our office was filled with joy because of her presence, stories about your family, laughter and amazement about family vacations, and shock about a few bold moves along the way – like the time Susan went after a man beating a dog with no regard for her own safety in a foreign country.
Susan tackled policy issues, addressed our communities needs, worked on campaigns, volunteered at our Chamber of Commerce, raised money for charities, supported our veterans, helped coordinate our communities Old Timer’s Dinner, and so much more.
Susan was kind, thoughtful, organized, enthusiastic, and served the people of our community with grace and compassion; she will be forever missed.
With love, respect, and sorrow,
Anna

During my time on the Chugiak Eagle River Chamber board I gained a great appreciation for the women, past and present , who have helped make the Chamber the positive force for good that it is today in the community. Susan is one of those women. She was a tireless advocate for Chugiak Eagle River, whether working for the legislature, serving on the board or volunteering for Bear Paw or other Chamber events.
She will be missed.

To Mike, Jared, Kyle & Cameron – “YOU BOYS MEANT THE WORLD TO HER” – that can never be taken away, your memories of your Wife and Mother will live on within each of you – she left a little of herself within you – she will be deeply missed. She was a strong, loving, caring person with beautiful blue eyes, a smile for everyone, BIG heart and contagious laugh. I loved the way she interacted with Mike, how they could finish each other stories or call each other out - we loved listening to the stories between them, about them and their adventures – my jaw was always sore from laughing at these two.
I met Susan when she was in high school, her mother, Patty Barr (owned Crown Travel) and father, Charles Barr (Contractor) worked with my parents throughout the years.
I remember one night in ANC, we were invited to Mike’s house for a party, Clark in tow (way younger years) – the watermelon that they infused with alcohol for days. I believe it wasn’t soon after that you two got engaged. We remember the Lake Louise/Paxon camping trips in the “Horney” motorhome – campfire story telling – State Fair fun. Yes, Susan will be missed but never forgotten. We were all very honored to call her our friend – until we met again – love to you boys!!

Susan was such an incredible person who always had a smile on her face. I knew her through the CER Chamber and really enjoyed working with her and getting to know her and Mike. She volunteered countless hours to our community and we will never forget all of the contributions that she made to Eagle River. I will miss her most at Bear Paw where she coordinated the parade judging and was found in the headquarters tent all weekend long. It didn't matter what needed to be done, she was always willing to step in and help out. She was such a beautiful, positive person and her laugh was truly infectious. My thoughts are with her family and I hope you can find some comfort in the wonderful memories you shared with her. I know I will always think of her at Bear Paw and Chamber Events.

Susan was such a treasure for our Eagle River community and indeed, our entire State. I feel blessed to having known and worked with her as a board member of the Chugiak-Eagle River Chamber. Our community is so much better because of her efforts and her wisdom. She will be missed.
Mike, I know words give little comfort at this time, but I hope the knowledge that we are all better persons because of Susan will give you some comfort and support.

My Mother will have have a special place in my heart, I can't imagine having someone who could care so much for me and my brothers. My mother was always checking in on me and making sure there wasn't anything she could do and I always knew I could rely on her. I will always miss her texts, she was so funny and I hope I got even just a bit of her humor instilled in me. I will miss laugh, and her blue eyes. I will miss her getting lovingly frustrated at my Dad but you always knew she loves him more than anything.
I miss you mom, and I love you more than anything.

I met Susan at Curves. It didn't take long for me to realize that I wasn't going to work out, I was going to hang out with Susan. We talked about everything under the sun. She loved her family and her husband more than she could say. She was the most genuine person I had ever met. Not a pretentious bone in her body. She was a bright spot in my day. Always willing to listen and give good thoughtful advice. I am going to miss her, everyday.

Susan was the most special person. She taught me so much about being a strong person, and was always there to "talk me off the ledge" when things were overwhelming. She had the biggest heart. She loved her family, her friends, and life...no matter the circumstances. I had the extraordinary gift of her & Mike's friendship and I will miss her travel exploits, catching me up on her 3 sons exploits, her great camping stories, and her bear alerts! We had the opportunity to make a trip to Napa Valley and some of my favorite photos of that trip. I love you Susan and family, and you will be in my heart always.

My mother was an amazing woman and I don't know where to start. She was the best mom as she had a special relationship with me and each of my brothers but unique to each of us and our differences. We all knew she loved us deeply and would do anything for us. She was an amazing wife as she uplifted and enabled my dad to do many things in his life as well as supported him when he truly needed it most.
I loved to spend time with my mom whether it was just in a circle talking or traveling places I never would have thought to visit on my own. She loved to travel and went to so many places. Im only upset in that I did not get to travel and spend more time with her. She was the best.
I was always amazed at her work ethic, even when sick, the time volunteered to the community, and the amount of friends she had through all the different social circles she was in.
I am truly heartbroken to not be able to just call her for advice or just talk for hours like I have done for so many years. I hope to live life in a way that would make her proud and she has set a very high standard with how kind and amazing she was in so many aspects of life. She was too young to go, but really did pack a lot into her life, from impacting so many lives locally to traveling the world.

Susan was so many things to so many people that it’s hard to know where to begin. It was truly an honor and privilege to know, love, and be loved by her. She was one of those people that everyone loved because her countenance lit up a room and it was so special to make her smile and hear her laugh. She had the most contagious laugh and I loved hearing her tell stories of her family, raising the boys, and her travels around the world. She had such a huge personality and was a true joy to spend time with her. She always gave the right advice at the right time and was the most genuine person I have ever met. When preparing to attend the Mrs. America Pageant, she had bought her family’s plane tickets before I had my own and I was blown away by her generosity and support. She told me after raising three boys, “this was her first daughter experience.”
Susan had a heart of love, generosity, compassion, and kindness. She was a beautiful daughter of God and set an example for her friends and family of what it meant to have a Christ-like heart. The most important thing to her was her family and making sure they were happy. She loved Mike and the boys with all her heart and set the example of the type of wife and mother and I want to be. I am forever grateful for the man she and Mike raised my husband to be. I will miss her every day, but I feel so incredibly blessed for every moment I spent with her. It has been an honor to be her daughter-in-law.

Laughter and Smiles

July 9, 2019

I didn't know Susan "in person" very well, having met her only once in Las Vegas. What I did know of her was through my sister, Jane, who throughout the years shared their adventures in Juneau and the friendship between them. And when I finally met this "Susan", I knew what everyone who met her must have felt being around her-happiness. Her smile was infectious and her laughter so engaging. Who couldn't feel good around this woman. And the sparkle in her eye for her guy was refreshing to see. I hope the best memories of Susan will help those who loved her be less difficult in the days ahead.

State Fair

July 7, 2019

Before moving out of state my Parents and I went to the state fair together, It was probably our 15th time going to the little Alaskan Fair and this was my favorite. Enjoying the people watching with her, eating terribly overpriced and delicious food. Petting all of the animals, she especially loved the little goats and piglets. More than anything I always enjoyed watching my parents be together and watching them tease and flirt with each other year after year, they are the best example a son could ever have.

I love you Mom.

Lunch in Paris

July 4, 2019

The guys were going to yet another war museum, and Susan and I decided to tap out!  We did a little shopping and ultimately ended up putting together this lunch.  We had a hilarious deli experience, as they did not speak very good English, and we spoke even worse French.  There was a lot of laughing, both us and them, but ultimately ended up with what we wanted...I think!    We took it back to our hotel and sat on the most beautiful little terrace.  We were sitting there chatting and thoroughly enjoying our little lunch, and I remember thinking this is what Paris is about.

An elderly lady came out on the terrace shortly after us, and we immediately asked her if she would like to join us.  She declined on anyfood, but it started conversation.  I remember listening to Susan ( and myself) have the best conversation with this lady. Susan had a way of making people feel so comfortable talking to her.
