ForeverMissed

Susan, with the dark curly hair, was strong by every definition of the word.

In March, a couple weeks after turning 70, Susan woke up with a crossed eye.  Over the next two months she had increasing facial pain and numbness before finding out she had a cancerous inoperable tumor on her skull base.  She quickly underwent a surgery to understand treatment options for the tumor, and it was ultimately diagnosed as a form of thyroid cancer.  Susan started three weeks of targeted daily radiation on the tumor, which began to show signs of success.  Six days after completing treatment, she developed a blood clot in her lungs that she did not survive.  Susan was never one to give up at any point in her life, and we're so proud of how bravely and intensely she battled cancer for the 4 months prior to her death.

It has been almost two years since we celebrated your life, mama, and it still feels like a fresh loss some days. I miss you deep within my heart, and I think of you every day. I see the best of you in Lauren—thank you for that.

As you know, you continue to influence my life in tiny ways all the time. Now I pull from my memories words and feelings to shape what I think you’d say. Sometimes it is helpful. Often you are right. You probably already know that, though. I miss you and I love you from the deepest place in my heart, mom.

It is spring—new life is blooming all around us. I think of you when I see all the flowers. I hear my wind chimes and think of you. We were in such a different place a year ago—a different type of unknowing and different type of uncertainty. Time to listen for your voice again. I love you.

I think of softball tournament weekends and I can hear your voice in the background cheering us on. I see your smile and hear your laugh. You will always remain in my heart and in my memory as a fun-loving mama! I know you and my dad will be up there in heaven recalling and reminiscing about the times your daughters had that amazing at-bat or that incredible strike-out with just the right pitch, may you share in the love and good times that you've blessed us with and made possible.

I was blessed to know Susan. She was like my softball mom always keeping it real. I honestly think I got my harsh personality from her. Not only was she a caring person but she always kept us in our place. I loved her so much. She also gave the best hugs. Honestly words can’t describe the woman that she was!! I’m such a better person because I knew her! You will be missed

Susan, I don't know how or why you got so lucky to marry into this crazy family, but I am so glad you did. We were the lucky ones. At your wedding you came up and hugged me and told me that you would take good care of Tim. You have done that and so much more. You both have raised two very beautiful girls. You both should be so proud.  Job well done. You are missed bunches. We shall meet again. Love you so much

Hard to find the right words to express my feelings to a family devastated by the loss of their matriarch.
I met Susan not long after she and Tim (Ôi) began their relationship. I spent countless night visiting their small apartment and sleeping on their chair and ottoman. I was fortunate to be in Grass Valley for the births of both Lauren and Lindsey, and to watch them grow over the subsequent years.
Susan, you are one of a kind; strong, intellectual, caring and a whole lot of fun. I hate having to say goodbye for now, but know also that we will all be reunited in eternal life. My love to your family.

I was one of the lucky ones to know and witness the love Susan had in her heart for her husband, daughters and grandchildren. She was an advocate for all things good and my friend. I will think of her often and smile.

I’m not sure how I got so lucky to have such a thoroughly devoted mama, but I am thankful for you every day. I hope to honor your legacy by giving my own children that same love and support. I miss you beyond words, and although things feel impossible now I look forward to someday thinking of you with more smiles than tears.

Her Life

Susan Roark (Bracco) Obituary

August 23, 2019
Born in New York City on March 8, 1949 to Louis and Teresa Bracco, Susan joined her two older sisters – baby brother arrived a few years later – and a large, spirited extended family of many aunts, uncles and cousins. Eventually Lou moved his family across the Tappan Zee Bridge to Rockland County, settling in Nyack. After finishing school, Susan joined Volunteers in Service to America and later travelled independently in Europe before coming back to the states and making her way across the country to California. Susan met Tim Roark in Grass Valley in 1976 with his father, Lee, playing matchmaker between his favorite Denny’s waitress and his eligible son. Tim made Susan laugh for the next 43 years, through good times, great times and those times in between where laughter and love was all they had. Their love and unwavering dedication to one another remains an example to many of what it means to be married. Susan was a fierce defender of her family, and often called Tim the best decision she ever made that resulted in her greatest joys – daughters Lauren and Lindsey born in 1979 and 1982. After starting her family, Susan returned to school to get her college degree. Service to others was a common thread in her professional life. Her talents and persistence were put to good use in a career with the County of Nevada, where she helped members of the community get into and repair their homes. Susan was always as comfortable leading as she was rolling up her sleeves and doing the work herself.

Dependable and present, Susan worked hard at everything. Susan’s opinions were firmly rooted in her principles. She was brash and honest and caring all at once, always, no compromise. Susan created a welcoming home, and it was comfortable to anyone who walked through the door. She liked to feed people, was an excellent cook, and used no recipes – since she took her abilities with her we’re now wondering what we’ll do for biscotti, good sauce, meatballs, peppers and onions, Linzer tarts and repurposed leftovers. Susan loved preparing for parties but was ready for everyone to go home shortly after they started. Her favorite place was sitting on her deck at home, having tea with her daughters or supervising Tim in the yard. Susan enjoyed reading books, decorating, searching for good finds at thrift stores, and giving away her favorite things. In fact, she was always quick to give things away: furniture, food, and suggestions. Susan is deeply missed and loved by her friends, community and extended family, her siblings Patricia (Nicholas), Michele, and Paul (Lily), her husband Tim, her daughters, Lauren (Will), Lindsey (Alan), and grandchildren Sawyer (10), Wilson (5), Timothy (4), Colin (18mo), and newborn Major Susan (who she got to cuddle for one beautiful month). You always knew where you stood with Susan. And with us, Susan, you will stand in our hearts forever.

A series of small memories

August 28, 2019
I'm missing you a lot today, mom.  And what is flooding into my mind are all the conversations about regular life things.  Like new tablecloths, or plants, or how proud you were of Sawyer, or how you want me to extend my house to make an office, or Colin's new tooth, or a bruise on my leg, or a funny thing Wilson or Timmy did, or Dad being on the roof, or buying groceries with Raleys e-cart, or how I haven't bought bar stools yet.  We've had thousands of these conversations with you, all of us. Lauren, Dad, Aunt Patty, Aunt Shelley, Aunt Lily, Val, Cyndi...the list goes on and on.  We all had so many of them with you.  And not enough.  Or maybe enough.  It just does't feel that way today.  I love you.

Things I learned from my mama

August 25, 2019
I learned a lot of things from my mom, and I’m sure you did too. I’m going to list some of them here, and add more as they come to me...please feel free to do the same.

  • I learned to always help the underdog. Not just root for him or her, but to lend a hand.
  • I learned to jump in and help.
  • I learned that if there’s an opportunity to wear sequins, you should.
  • I learned to stand up for what’s right.
  • I learned to cherish my children.
  • I learned to always take a jacket (I’m still working on this). I was horrified when she made me take a coat to a homecoming dance (it was pouring down rain, but still...).
  • I learned that leftover day is the best dinner.
  • I learned that it’s not okay to expect perfection from myself or others. Still working on this, too.
  • I learned it’s important to work hard, but it’s also important to snuggle up with a book and relax.
  • I learned that I didn’t need to earn love from my family.
  • I learned that my mom was always proud of me, no matter what I did, no matter how small, or weird, or how far I diverged from her expectations.
  • I learned that my mom always “loved me more”.
  • I learned that measuring while cooking or baking is wholly unnecessary. Most of the time.
  • I learned that although she didn’t leave me a plan, she did give me the skills to figure it out.
  • I learned that earrings are a must.
  • I learned that family is the most important.
  • I learned that while living without my mom is the hardest thing I’ve ever done, I’m thankful I had 39 precious years with her, learning, laughing, loving.
  • I learned it’s important to decorate walls in your home
