Susie
somehow I deleted my 2018 tribute.
Spent Thanksgiving and Christmas with the sibs. We had a good time, Cheryl was a great hostess. You would be amazed at how your nieces and nephews are growing. We missed Ashley, Dave and the kids and of course you. You would be 50, amazing. What would have been your life, something remarkable I imagine. Keep us all safe. love you Cathy

Dear Suzanne, as a good friend of your oldest sister, Cathy, I met you when you were a spunky seven-year-old. You were a cute little tomboy and we used to "roughhouse" and have fun. I also remember one day when you were in High School, Cathy and I picked you and a friend up
to come home and have pizza for lunch. You were always happy and cheerful, and a great softball player, even as a young girl. I miss you.

My dearest Susie,
Losing mom was only comforted knowing she was with you. Our family needs all your love and support as we try to stay together in a new way without you, mom and dad.

I miss you, love you. Cathy

Next year will also be the 20 years since the SDSU softball tournament was renamed the Campbell/Cartier Classic softball tournament (I think it is the 24th overall).

The San Diego State University Campbell/Cartier Softball Classic is an annual event held in the memory of former Aztec softball players Susanne Campbell and Karin Cartier. Susanne Campbell and Karin Cartier lost their lives during the 1991 softball season. The single car accident which took place in Rosarito, Mexico left a lasting mark on teammates and coaches alike.

Campbell, a three-year starting catcher, was in her senior year. She had a .344 batting average, was an All-Western Athletic Conference selection and led the Aztecs in several offensive and defensive categories. She also set several single-season and career records during her time on Montezuma Mesa and is considered to be among the top softball athletes to ever wear an Aztec uniform. Her number five (5) has been retired.

Cartier, a transfer pitcher from the University of Hawai'i, had an excellent 1991 season at SDSU, emerging as a top pitcher and a great hitter. Along with Campbell, Cartier was one of the strongest Aztecs in the weight room and possessed good leadership abilities and Division I playing experience.

The SDSU Spring Classic was renamed in 1994 to the Campbell/Cartier Classic in remembrance of their friendship and fine athletic ability. The 2003 tournament will be the 10th played in their memory.

In honor of Susanne Campbell and Karin Cartier, an endowment fund has also been set up bearing their names. The recipient of this annual scholarship is a student-athlete who is dedicated, has strong character, possesses leadership skills and demonstrates sportsmanship. Please contact the Aztec softball office for more information about the Campbell/Cartier Memorial Fund at (619) 594-1952 or 594-5853.
