This memorial website was created in memory of our loved one, Shirley Teresa Guthrie de Rico.
Dr. Rico passed on Nov. 5th 2014. She will be remembered as an exceptionally generous woman, compassionate caregiver, devoted wife and a beloved mother.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Mrs. Justina Guthrie, brothers Edgar and Wilson. She will be dearly missed by her loving husband of 51 years, Dr. Miguel Rico, her daughter Gemma Campbell (Kurt) and their children Jessica Russell (Nick), Hillary, Natalie and Ryan, her son Michael Rico (Debbie) and their daughter Mikayla, her sister Nila Uriona (Jorge)and her sister-in-law Marina Guthrie.
Teresa was born in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. She graduated from the University of St. Andres School of Medicine in 1968. She came to the United States in 1969. She dedicated her professional life to the care of individuals with developmental disabilities and eventually served as the Medical Director of the Kansas Neurological Institute where she worked for over 26 years.
Teresa was known for her gracious smile and always had a funny story at the ready in hopes of lifting your spirits. She was selfless to a fault and truly lived to serve her neighbor. A recent example of her generous nature occurred when she walked across four lanes of traffic at a busy intersection in order to hand a homeless man a twenty dollar bill.
Dr. Rico’s passions were caring for her family, actively practicing her Catholic faith, providing care for her patients and gardening. In lieu of gifts or flowers, family requests that donations be made to Holy Name Catholic Church.

Services are as follows at Holy Name Catholic Church ( 1001 Southwest Blvd. Kansas City, KS 66103) -Visitation 9:00, Rosary 10:30 and Funeral Mass 11:00 Monday, November 10th, 2014.

It will soon be 6 years since my most wonderful mother passed. I think of her everyday and say thank you to God for blessing me with the best mother I could have had. I always enjoy reading the kind words my mother's friends post on this site. It reminds me of how truly special she was.

Rico family, my heart is saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Rico. I worked with her many years ago at KNI in Topeka and she was the most genuine amazing woman. What I remember most is she was not pretentious about being a "doctor" and treated me as if I were important, as a home staff person. That's the kind of personality she had. She was always a little taken by my height and at 5' 10" standing next to her I can still hear say "my, you are so tall." She will be remembered. May God strengthen you all......

Tia Teresa aun la tengo en mi mente contando un chiste para hacernos reir y sentada junto a su gata bella. Le agradezco mucho por abrir su corazon y darme consejos cuando llegue a Kansas y extranaba mucho a mi madre, por pensar siempre en mi aunque yo me aleje de la familia.

Siempre la recordare con mucho carino, me parece mentira que ya no este en este plano. Aunque no tuve el chance de decir mi ultimo adios, voy a mantener mis recuerdos muy profundos en mi corazon.

Tia Teresa was a wonderfully generous and kind person and showed a tremendous patience with everyone, especially the sick and vulnerable. She was so kind to so many, and she brightened everyone's lives. I will always remember her sense of humor as well as her gentle nature. Tía Teresa fue una gran mujer ella siempre tenía una sonrisa para todos y se preocupaba por el prójimo sin importar quien sea... A ella le sobraba amor para dar... Teresa was the most selfless woman I have ever known. Not only did she believe her faith but she lived her faith to the fullest. She was so kind and caring - always putting everyone's needs before hers. She is a shining example how we all should live! We love you and will miss you very much - especially your warm smile and wonderful laugh. You have truly been a joy to know!
