High school friend and Soror

January 29, 2013

I went to high school with Terri and was a friend of hers. We had lost touch and I didnt know she had pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha, that she had become my soror.

Now she is an Ivy Beyond the Wall and forever will live in our hearts.

My condolences to her family and her chapter sorors. Terri will always be loved and never forgotten.

I can hear our songbird, Terri...

January 28, 2013

...singing as cited from CeCe Winans' Everlasting Love Album (1998)
To Terri’s family and loved ones

"Where there is grief, there will be hope
And if ever a hand is in need, know that I'll be holdin' on
Know that the peace that comes from above
Is the same everlasting love."

"Remember me whenever you're all alone
And if it helps you to sleep know that I'll be looking on
Know that the peace that you dream of
Is the same everlasting love."

"Yesterday and today, forever more it will remain,
Even now it's still the same
'Cause my love will never change, know that the peace
That comes from above is that same everlasting love."

Gift of God

January 28, 2013

On this day, 1/26/13, with tears in our eyes but joy in our hearts we gather together to celebrate you, Dorothy Teresa (Terri) Pope.  I met Terri on one occasion about 20 years ago at her Nail Salon, Tips & Toes, that she owned in the Bronx near my parents’ home around E. 240th St. and White Plains Rd.  We lost touch soon after her salon closed but reconnected through a series of telephone calls, emails, and text messages just last year in the beginning of June.   Our friendship instantly flourished into something special as she would often confide in me with her concerns about things going on at that time in her life.   “U are my joy luck charm because each time I talk to u, everything is all good!,” “Serendipity,” “So glad to be your sister & friend” were her words of expression regarding my existence in her life.

One day I said to her, you know Dorothy, my middle name is Dorethea (Do-ree-tha).  Our names are one in the same.  She immediately corrected my pronunciation and said (Do-re-thee-a).  Now my parents are from South Carolina and for 41 years I had been pronouncing it Dorethea.  Well this prompted me to do research, well in fact, not only did I discover that she was correct, I also discovered that our names meant “a gift of God.”  She said, “See U are my joy luck charm. “

Terri was a business woman to the bone.  Because Terri previously shared with me that she wanted to go into the greeting card business, I presented her with an opportunity in October that would catapult her career towards doing just that.  Although, she only was in the infancy stages of the greeting card business, she accepted the challenge stating, “My goal is to create something explicitly 4 u with all your ideas in mind & part of the final product.”   I was not only her sister, her friend, but now her very 1st client in this new journey of T.P. Crafts.  Through all the bumps and bruises, she did it! And said “I learned a lot.”

I stand before you to proudly say, Terri leaves behind a rich legacy as the holiday card marketing distributor of my event that took place the date of her 46th birthday.  Her perseverance to produce her 1st greeting card project to go through production was outstanding.   180 elderly residents at the Harlem nursing home on Sun. Dec. 23rd were recipients of her tenacity displayed through that greeting card.

Although we never physically met again since that 20 years ago, U are forever with me, Dorothy, my gift of God!
Peace & Blessings ---

A Gift for My Little Sister

January 25, 2013

It seems inconceivable that the providence of God chose to take this precious jewel (Terri Pope) from us for such a time (too soon) as this.  I dare not unravel the mystery of why God allowed such an untimely event to happen.  I humbly take comfort in knowing that God allow me a brief season to know Terri's glowing personality and witness her infectious smile.  I often referred to her as my "Little Sister" and she referred to me as her "Big Brother" -Smile; as she would always seek my advice on personal, social and professional matters.  In fact, I invested so much time in her; that I often told her that I was going to charge her for all my "free" advice :-).   And yet, drawing from my experience with her, clearly, I confess that I was the one who should have paid her.  "My Little Sister" was witty and funny :-).  But not only that, Terri had a unending passion for others, a tremendous voice, and above all, a 2.5 million dollar smile that was an extension of the Sun.  To the entire Pope Family, please know with certainty, that I extend my sincerest thoughts and heartfelt prayers to you for the unutterable hurt that you must be going through right now.  May you find comfort in John 10:27-29.  I am richly blessed to have known her.   Rest in Peace "Little Sister".   Much Love and Respect, Grant Williams III (PBS Inc.)

Big Sister Terri

January 23, 2013

When my line (pledge class) of Alpha Kappa Alpha pledged, Big Sister Terri's greeting had to be sang and there was a rap at the end of it. . . We were on the bus going to South Campus (of Syracuse University) and the bus was PACKED. . . We were coming to Terri's stop to get off the bus and she whispered, "Hook IT UP, ivies!". . .

We sang and rapped for Terri. . .  and she sang and danced off the bus to her home. . . [She tried to teach us to harmonize her greeting but, that didn't work out!]  As my sands, Donna, pointed out, the bus driver (stunned, I guess) waited for us to finish and some of the bus riders applauded!  Terri loved it!

I will miss her wit, laughter, and delicate touch on how to make something oh-so-pink-and-green-sophisticatedly fabulous!

Sing on, Sister Terri, and rest well!
May her family and loved ones be lifted by our prayers!
