Happy Birthday

December 11, 2020
To honor you on your birthday I planned on taking champy out for a fly but wind didn’t cooperate. Didn’t want it to end up on the roof like that day we were at the school!  We had a few RC planes behind Terry and George’s house at the school field. He was leaning to fly. For some reason I had to leave for a few minutes and he decided he would fly champy. When I got back, my son Brad was on a neighbors roof trying to get champy back! Brad had went and gotten a ladder and Terry told him to hurry up and get it down before I got back lol. I was mad at him for telling Brad to get on a neighbors roof without asking and Brad had on flip flops! I chewed both there butts out lol! Oh how wish I could relive some of those moments! Miss you buddy.

Biopsy results are back. I have small cell carcinoma, and aggressive cancer which you don't wnat to wait around on. Neuroligist stated outlook was "grim" but treatable with radiation and chemo therapy. Have referral sent to Oncologist waiting on appointment time and date. If no news by Wednesday, I'll turn up the fire another notch. Something that UPS taught me well!! Feeling good, a bit tired as always. If you don't hear from me for a few days,, you and your family have a wonderful Christmas and thanks again for being there for me. I love you both!!

12/22/2015 - 10:27am
Thanks Terry for letting Cheryl and I know. We had hoped and prayed for it to be a mild form, unagressive cancer but that's not Gods idea for you. I've spent a good portion of my adult life around you and have always been inspired by your can do attitude. To quote you "if you tell me a rooster can pull a freight train I'll stick a hook in his ass".... I wish you the same strenght and God's peace as you tackle this obstacle. I love you Terry and will be praying for your victory.

Just a text between friends that I've kept and will keep forever. Terry, you have no idea how much you've meant to me. We've laughed, we've cussed, we've shared each others pains that only working 16 hours a day together can understand, we've kept each other from going off the tracks, we endured..... above all we had each other when it mattered the most....... I love you and miss you... Steve

For those who thought Terry had a peculiar sence of humor, I can tell you at least part of the reason. He and I were raised on The Three Stooges and Gomer Pyle USMC. Back in his younger days he could do a mean Curly Shuffle. Not everyone may have been blessed to see this but there was an episode on Gomer where he could acurately predict the weather. Of course there was a lot of hopping, stomping and skipping backward to get the forcast. Terry loved this episode and was able to do a spot on impersonation of Gomer's routine.

Flat tires on a new lawnmower!

September 15, 2016

When we first moved to Brownsburg, Terry bought a riding lawnmower. There was still an old barbed wired fence partially in the back of our yard. So Terry tore it down, but just cut the metal post with my sawjall, but he cut them level with the ground leaving some sharp edges sticking up. So he starts mowing the lawn with his brand new riding lawnmower and he gets a flat! so he brings into garage plugs the tire an then  goes back to mowing then I hear him back in garage with another flat, this happened 2 more times and he jumps off lawnmower jumping up & down hands waving & cursing of course, he was shouting why was he getting so many flats. I said well maybe the metal edges were sticking up just enough when the lawnmower went over them.  So I handed him a sledgehammer and told him to go beat down the sharp edges, and of course he  did with such vengence the whole neighborhood heard him.  I wish I could of video taped him he was totally exhausted an came in and passed out on the couch.  Terry was very pasionate about mowing his yard, he complained everytime I planted a tree or bush said it was hard for him to mow around all the crap I had in the yard.  We would always laugh everytime I mentioned the flat tires on the lawn mower.  When he got a new lawnmower he called it eightbells after a race horse that won the KY derby an then had to be put down.  He loved his lawn mower!

As mentioned in the other stories Terry and I grew up on our grandparents farm. Our grandfather had hogs on this farm. In those days hogs were raised out in pastures instead of giant hog barns you see today. If we had hogs in pastures that were away from our main barn we had small "hog houses" for them for shelter. These were all different sizes from maybe 6' X 10' to 10' X 20'.  If they were in pastures that were close to the main barn they were able to get in the barn for shelter. The area in the main barn for the hogs was maybe 20' X 50'. Of course these buildings would need to be cleaned out once or twice a week. Since Terry and I were cheap labor it was our job to clean them out. The main part of this farm is a square 160 acres. The house and barn where we grew up is on the northeast corner of this square. The part of the farm where most of the hogs were is on the southwest corner. We would start cleaning the hog buildings on the southwest corner of the farm. Terry would spend a lot of time being sure the total number of hog buildings or the square footage to be cleaned in the main barn would come out exactly the same for both of us. If I happened to finish before he did he expected me to help him. If I didn't he would get mad, quit and walk home. So I would have to do them by myself anyway. If he finished before I did and I asked him to help me he would just laugh and leave. He wore a pretty good path in the field from the corners of this farm. He could always run a lot faster than I could so I got pretty accurate at throwing things. I guess that may have led to the alledged altercations that may, or may not, have occured. I miss those days but I really miss him.

This is a picture of Terry and his pet sheep. For whatever reason he named it Clarice. Terry was a strange boy.

Back in the late 70's Terry, like most males in their early to mid 20's, wanted to have a Corvette. He found and bought a real nice 69. It had side pipe exhaust so this added to the muscle car look. He was extremely proud of this car and took very good care of it. He had just recently become "available" again so he was looking into that also. He met a girl at a local ag fertilizer store, we were farming at the time, and decided he would ask her out. She accepted so big plans were made. He went to pick her up for the date and she came out to the car wearing a pair of shorts. When he went to help her into the car she didn't quite clear the side pipes and bare skin came in contact to the hot exhaust pipes. That ended the date before it got started and as far as I can remember the date was never rescheduled. Like I said earlier he took very good care of this car, he even put it up on blocks in the tool shed for the winter. He arranged the blocks so the tires were suspended and wouldn't come in contact with the gravel while it was stored. After a couple of years of this he decided it wasn't practical to have a vehicle he couldn't drive for several months of the year. So even though he still loved the car he decided to sell it. He sold it to a friend he thought would care for the car the same as he did. That's not exactly what happened. The guy he sold it to was not as careful with it and so after a very short time was traveling at a high rate of speed, lost control and crashed it. Thank God he, or the passenger riding with him, weren't injured but the car was totaled. Even though Terry loved this car it caused him pain so he never bought another Corvette.

I see him with a buzz-cut, toothless grin, wearing that awful winter ear-flap hat, in the heat of summer. Sweat left clean stripes down his dirty cheeks. (Did I mention it was a winter hat?) Oh, but that beautiful smile!

I didn't think Terry and Timmy would reach adulthood, certain they would kill one another during one of their legendary brawls. Tim was older and bigger, but Terry was a mindless whirlwind.

Reflecting, I should have been kinder to my nephews--more like brothers--but I was young and thoughtless.

I love you, Terry Lee.

When Terry was younger he was always in a rush. He was even in a rush to be born. He was born in our grandparents house about a month early weighing in at 5 lbs. As he aged things just didn't happen fast enough for him. In his early to mid teens he decided he was going to make wine. After reading up on the process he bought the supplies needed to get it done. I don't know the process but I do know that there is a ferment stage. The way he was going to do it he would pour the raw wine in an empty Boonesfarm bottle, I haven't a "clue" where he could find one of those, put a ballon over the end and wait for the expansion of the ferment stage to be complete. After the balloon would completey deflate it was ready to drink. One reason to use a Boonesfarm bottle is it came with a screw on cap so you could cap it and take it with you. I like one month of being two years older than Terry. He and I were both in marching band at the same time. So he would ride to summer band practice with me. During summer practice there would be a week where we would practice all day all week. It gets pretty hot in east central Indiana in the summer time. Like I said earlier in this story Terry was always in a rush. So he decided it was time to drink the wine he made even though it hadn't completely finished, he told me after the fact the ballon was still completely inflated when he removed it. Honestly, unbeknownst to me he took the ballon off, screwed the cap on and put it under the seat of my car. After a long hot day at band pratice we went to my car to leave and found that the bottle had exploded. I learned it takes a long time for your car to stop smelling like a really bad winery after that happens.

Terry and I grew up on our grandparents farm. One Christmas, when we were very young, Terry received a toy tool box. Maybe that's when he decided to become a mechanic, he was the best mechanic I have ever known. He carried the tool box most everywhere he went on the farm, expecially in the chicken lot, you have to realize he was probably only 4 years old. The chickens my grandparents had had roosters with the hens. As probably most people know roosters can be very mean. They like to chase little kids around. My grandmother noticed that Terry would carry the toolbox around in the chicken lot but never open it and play with it in there. Shortly after that he left it in the house and went to the barn to help feed the cows. My grandmother decided to open the box and see if he still had all the tools. When she opened it, there were no tools in it only a large butcher knife. When he returned from the barn she asked him why he was carry the knife instead of the tools. He said the roosters weren't going to chase, or jump, on him. Apparently when he was going in the lot, without a specific reason the be in there, he was daring the roosters to try and chase him. As far as I can remember, as long as he was carrying that box they never bothered him.

Some of my best  childhood memories were playing with Terry, Tim, Bonni a d my brother Jim on my  grandfather's farm.  We spent hours exploring and making our own adventures ... We made great tunnels in the hay mound and didn't care how hot it was . Bonni and I loved it when the boys got in trouble . My favorite was when they rode the calves . They thought it a great idea .... Their grandfather .... Not so much . You were loved and will be missed Terry . I like to think that Jim, my mother and Granny were there to welcome you home .
