Happy Birthday Gram!
She was so missed during the recent holiday season. The smells and the sounds are just not the same.
I wish Asha had more time with her Nana while she was somewhat mobile to have these same warm memories.
Stories and photos will have to do...

God Bless Thelma on her first birthday in heaven. How fitting to hear Frank Sinatra, one of her favorites, who is serenading her this day! Thelma had great faith under pressure, and I will always remember this as a faith-model she left for the world. Till we meet again, God bless you Thelma, you dear child of God.

I spent every week with Thelma as a Hospice volunteer. Our friendship and love for each other grew week by week. We sang together, made jokes, talked about everything in life. There was nothing we couldnt discuss. We watched movies together (Thelma listened while I watched) but she knew more about the movie than I did!!! She told me all about her life.....her ups and downs. I spent time with Thelma a few hours prior to her death. I will never forget her. I cant find the words to tell you how much she meant to me and enriched my life. Sleep well my dear friend.

I will never forget Thelma! Her witty humor and love of the Bible were a joy to me! Thelma also enjoyed discussing famous moments in American history...as an amateur history buff, I could talk with Thelma for hours!
I will miss her dearly...and I can still hear her singing "Amazing Grace" during one of our visits. May she rest in peace and enjoy the company of angels in heaven. - Pastor Jack DiMatteo, Chaplain, Compassionate Care Hospice

I know Thelma through her daughter Ashley and her granddaughter Ursa. I never spent a lot of time with her but loved all the stories and the few encounters. I remember her spirit at Ursa's wedding, where we hung out. And a long time ago Thelma knit some Christmas tree ornaments for us -- we still put them on the tree. Now these ornaments will take on memorial feeling. Rest in peace, Thelma. And all of you who knew her well, I send my heart for your loss and grieving.

Thel came to our house more than once for Thanksgiving. She relied on a wheelchair then, so the challenge was to get her to the second floor, which is the main level of our house. Christine convinced her to get into our pickup truck, and then piloted Thel up a precarious and narrow route through the trees, to our second floor entrance. Thel emerged from the truck like a royal, happy and smiling, to take her place at the Thanksgiving table with our family and hers. We were so pleased to host four generations of her family that day. I know this is a painful time for all of you that survive her, but remember that Thel lives on in each of you every day, and she will never be forgotten. Love to you all, but especially Ashley, Sue, Ursa and Asha. Eileen and Christine

Memories. What can I say I have so many of my Auntie Thelma. I'm going to miss her so much. I think the funniest memory I have is when she came to visit us (mom and me) in Madrid. God we talked forever. Then I took he Defraga sisters to a cabin in the forest in Toro. No electricity or water. When it got dark we went to bed and the sisters had to sleep in bunk beds. Well Thelie got the bottom bunk but I had to hel'/push my mom up the ladder to the top bunk. Meanwhile, Thelie started to laugh and it was contagious.  So contagious that we all had to go outside in the DARK and do our thing. Well you can't imagine me holding Auntie in the middle of the night in the forest. I am so surprised we both didnt't roll over on the ground. She was a great trooper. Never a bad moment. I love her.

I've know Thel since my own childhood days in Dubuque, IA, when she welcomed me into her family with a generous spirit, and so this truly feels like a loss of a dear family member to me. I will always remember her as a kind soul with a big heart, though fiercely proud and independent. I will miss her deep soulful laugh and big presence. The world is a little smaller without her.

My memories of Thelma are from many years ago - but they still make me smile. I remember Thel visting Ann Arbor. Her love for little Black Bart (that sadly was not meant to be). Also whenever I hear someone say "lighten up" it makes me laugh and think of her. She was great mom, grandmother and great grandmother and will be missed.

While I only met Thelma once (at dinner at Chris & Eileen's old house I think) I was taken by her Midwestern openess and friendliness! Turns out Thelma and my mother had common Iowa (Dubuque) roots so we had quite a conversation. I know how Ashley, Sue and Family will miss this wonderful presence. Much love from Bob & Dan.

VISITS, HOLIDAYS AND DOMINOES GAMES WITH THE DOWLINGS ( Paul, Lucy , Daughter Maureen and Sons Bryan and Alex.

April 23, 2016

Thelma always came earlier to help with salads, potatoes,, desserts, making iced Tea , fold napkins, or whatever needed a hand at the moment. We were always laughing, telling jokes and stories from A to Z! During the dinners, Thelma would ask my sons Bryan and Alex to play old songs in the long vynil plays ( some of them were her Collection that she gave to Alex, along with her old wood radio and record player) . The Spanish Group " Los Panchos " playing their beautiful Boleros were Always the 1st to be played because they reminded her of the times spent with her sisters and Bob. We usually listened or sang along with her. She loved the Big Bands Music and played lots of those too.

After the dinners, she loved to play the Longest Trains of Dominoes! Then we would have delicious desserts, some made by Thelma, like her spectacular Cream Coconut Torte, and many others. We still pray and talk stories involving our Dearest Friend Thelma in Every Holiday. As she got older and she could not travel to be with her family for special dates, we were happy that she joined and entertained our holidays with her  presence. I still like to think of Thelma visiting us, and spending those valuable times that left so many Sweet Memories in Our Hearts! WE LOVE YOU DEAR THELMA AND ALWAYS WILL! THANKS ASHLEY, MYLES, URSA , ASHA FOR SHARING THELMA WITH US! WE ALWAYS APPRECIATED HOW FORTUNATE WE WERE TO ENJOY HER AS WE DID! SO LONG KIND, WITTY, AND MOST GENEROUS " TELMITA" AS MY CHILEAN MOM USED TO CALL YOU...THANKS FOR THE GREAT TIMES AND MEMORIES...UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN WITH YOU AND BOB! THE DOWLINGS LOVE YOU FOREVER...

Her Smile

What I remember most about Nana is the big smile she always put on Ursa's face.  I loved her storytelling and her ability to make you feel as though you were right there with her as she described her life's adventures.  On the holidays, she would get so dressed up and always have on fancy jewelry.  She was a proud beautiful woman.  She was so nice to me from the moment I met her.  And yes, she did love to listen to music on her radio!  I'm so happy that Asha got to spend so much time with Nana.   Nana, thank you for sharing your love, your stories and your life with us.  Miss you. Love, Alvin

Asha asking Nana about her Dream Life

October 19, 2015

We found this paper stashed in one of Thelie's drawers.  It shows notes from a younger Asha asking her Great-Grandmother aka "Nana" random questions about her imagined "Dream Life"...too cute!  (click pic to expand)
