The Life of Awuro A Thomas

August 7, 2012

Thomas Amboro Awuro was born on 6thJuly 1949 in Ngwo, Njikwa Subdivision in Momo Division, North West region. In 1950, he was taken by his parents Papa Zacharias Awuro Anchie and Mama Aboh Ndifon to Muyuka in the South West region. In 1953, he returned home to live with his Uncle, Papa Peter Akonji Anchie and later went  to the Presbyterian Primary School Ngwo where he finished in 1961.

In 1965, he earned admission into the Technical Institute in Onitsha - Nigeria. His studies at the institute were interrupted by the Nigeria-Biafra war in 1966. He returned to Cameroon and in 1967, he earned admission into the Government Technical College (GTC) Ombe. He was trained in motor mechanics and obtained the City and Guild Certificate at the end of his Technical Studies in Ombe in 1971.

He was employed thereafter by Delmas Vieljeux - Douala where he excelled as a Technician and earned the name “Adjusteur.” Uncle Tom could repair any spare part and make it possible to fit and be used. He worked for Delmas Vieljeux until 1980 when he obtained a visa and got the privilege to go to the United States of America for further studies.

Upon arrival in the United States of America, Uncle Tom started his education in Stationary Engineering at Montgomery College Takoma Park - Maryland.  He trained in the management of Boilers, Air Conditioners and Electrical Wiring. He worked in his field for a few years and in the mid 1980s he went to the Diesel Mechanics Institute in Virginia. He subsequently returned to the Washington DC area and worked at the Fairmont Hotel in the District of Columbia.

Secondary to exceptional performance at the Fairmont Hotel, in 1992, he was given a scholarship to do further Engineering studies at the Northern Virginia Community College - Annandale - Virginia. He graduated in the top tier of his class with a Certificate in Stationary Engineering - First Class. He returned to work at Fairmont Hotel and at the Double Tree Hotel in Rockville Maryland where he worked until his passing. Stories about Uncle Tom at the afore mentioned Hotels are galore and there is little doubt he would be missed at these institutions.

Uncle Tom has been known for his generousity and altruism. During his time in the Washington DC metropolitan area he received and lodged many family members and friends arriving from Cameroon. Whatever he had, it was for everybody to have. He stopped at nothing to attend to a friend or family member in need. He believed in Family and in the community. He did everything he could to impart these ideals on his family members and the people of his community.

He was instrumental in the the creation of the Ngwo Cultural and Development Association in the United States and would later become its first President. He also played a major role in the creation of the Nkun elements' Development and Cultural Association of the United States of America. He was versed in the the Ngwo History, Culture and Tradition. He did not need encouragement to enlighten and teach anyone who needed to know, what they needed to know about Ngwo. He was a man who spoke his mind and called it as he saw it. He loved Ngwo village and her people.

As a father, Uncle, Cousin and Friend, Uncle Tom's credentials are honourable. We all have stories and memories of a man who was easy going and straight forward. A man who always made sure his family and friends were doing well. He would never say no when he could do someone a favor. Uncle Tom 's greatest accomplishments must have been his ability to keep friendships and his ability to show love. We love him and miss him, but God loves him more.

Fair well Uncle Tom
