Biography

September 27, 2013

Thomas Etang Agbor was born on January 11, 1969 in Tiko to Mr. John and Mrs. Lucy Agbor. He was the first son and second child to be born to his parents. When Tom's mother was pregnant with him, it was difficult for Tom to come out of his mother’s womb after the normal 9 months. She was induced twice, first at 10.5 months and again at 10.3/4 months to no avail. Then a week later, he was born naturally.

At about 4 years old, he was always frightened. He sometimes hid in closets or under beds. At age 6, he fell into a diaper bucket full of water, head down, by his mom’s bedside. His mum was sleeping and heard as he was struggling to breathe. Fortunately, his mum was a nurse and was able to quickly perform CPR on young Tom.

In 1982, he was admitted to Sasse College in Buea-Cameroon. During his graduation, where he won many prizes, he became ill. This was on a Sunday, and the GCE O’ level exam was scheduled to begin the following day. His mother took him home and gave him some Malaria treatment. The next morning at 4am, the driver took him back to school and his treatment for Malaria continued throughout the GCE exam period. When the results came out, he passed in seven O’ level papers. He got admitted to Government High school Limbe. To celebrate his GCE results, he and his friends drove to a night club in Limbe one faithful night.  On their way back to Tiko, they had a ghastly car accident in Likomba where one person died. Tom was unconscious with head injuries. He spent about a month and a half at the Tiko Cottage hospital where he was in a coma. At least twice, the Doctor pulled the plugs pronouncing him dead and discontinuing the IVs et al. But, Tom came back to life. The accident affected his left eye and ear. He and his mother went to London for further treatment. While in London, he had surgery on his ear, and the doctors said his sight will be regained with time, and he did regain his sight.

Still in London, he registered in a law program which he completed in a year and passed with distinction. In 1987, his sister Maclaire, her friend Lesley Fonjungo and her friends's brother-George Fonjungo, joined him in London and they all flew to New York, where George Fonjungo lived. A couple of days later, George took all three of them to the University of Wisconsin, where they spent the next four years.

Tom graduated from the University of Wisconsin- Whitewater in 1991 with a bachelor in Business Administration and a minor in management. After graduation, he moved to Maryland where he lived with his aunt, aunty Cecy. He took Oracle courses, passed the certifications and got a job with a company called "International Paper" as an Oracle Data Base Administrator based in Tennessee. He lived there for a year and was transferred to Atlanta. He spent one year in Atlanta and decided to go back home to Cameroon, to be by his parents.

While in Cameroon he got a job with CNPS in Yaounde in the IT department, where he worked for about 10yrs. He was honored with a medal for good service. He married a lady by name Mojoko, and they had a daughter-McRuth Ngena Agbor. He named her daughter after his sisters, Maclaire and Ruth. Ngena, is his mother’s name. His daughter is 12 years old now. He later separated from his first wife and met Juliette with whom they have a three year old son named Edmund Ojong Agbor. Edmund is named after Dr. Agbor, who had treated him after the accident mentioned earlier. The Ojong part of his son’s name came from Tom’s dad.

He left Yaoundé, and moved to Douala where he got a job with CAMWATERS. He worked at CAMWATERS until his untimely death.

He lives behind his parents-Mr. and Mrs. John Agbor of Mutengene, two children-McRuth and Ojong, two sisters-Maclaire of USA and Ruth of Germany and two brothers, Obed of Germany and Gerald of Mutengene and lots of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends to mourn him.
