Tommy Douglas was a remarkable man who is celebrated across the country to this day. He made the greatest impact on the development of Canadian identity at his time through socialist achievements. As a dedicated politician he was willing to establish social change for the country. One of his major highlights was helping the upbringing of old age pension plan in the country. This means citizens 65 and older receive monthly payment from the government to fulfill their needs and sustain their lives as senior citizens. This had an impact on the development of Canadian identity because the country portrays itself as a believer of social justice for its' citizens. In addition, Tommy Douglas is a major reason why the country has insured health care. For instance, Douglas was an advocate of medicare for several years along with his colleagues in the CCF party in Saskatchewan. He brought further governmental awareness towards this when he became a member of the NDP party. This had a direct influence on the Canadian government because they began to consider insured health care and established health care laws in Canada. Health care in Canada means citizens of all ages have access to covered health care. As a result, medicare in Canada truly shaped Canadian identity at the time as the country is recognized by numerous nations because of it. Tommy Douglas' contributions in creating social justice for Canadians leaves him with deep respect from the entire nation.
