Love leaves a memory no one can steal, but death leaves a memory no one can heal.

A great father and a professional soldier!

Meticulous, Outstanding, Visionary, Loving and Caring.

I am what I am today because you mentored me like a father would a son. The attributes you imbibed in me serving as your Military Assistant and eventually as your Aide de Camp until you left the Service continue to resonate in me.

A man like no other who was the light in so many lives.

A man who spent a lifetime serving the nation and humanity.

Even though we know that you are in the right place and resting in the bossom of  the Almighty, we surely miss you.

Adieu sir!

Brig Gen Olatunji Olayinka.
Acting Provost Marshal (Army)
Former Military Assistant and Aide de Camp to Maj Gen Archibong.

My entire family and I received the news of the passing on to eternity of your beloved husband, Late Major General Ekpo Archibong (RTD), which took place on the 9th day of March 2021, at the age of 76.

Late Major General Ekpo Archibong (RTD) was a great man, an epitome of peace, and a dedicated serviceman who contributed immensely to the development of the Okoyong nation and Cross River State at large. His commitment and devotion to service during his time with the Nigeria Army, saw him rise to the rank of Major General, all while landing several key military appointments along the way, such as ADC to the C in C, Brigade Commander 9 motorized Brigade Ikeja Cantonment, Provost Marshal (NA), to mention but a few. He was also a devoted Christian and an active member of the Presbyterian Church, a loving father, as well as a retired military man who served the nation gallantly whenever he was called upon. To his immediate family and friends, he was very dutiful, humble and upright.

However, let’s be consoled by the fact that he lived a life worthy of emulation.  I urge you and the entire family members to emulate those good qualities he has left behind. While he will surely be missed by you and your entire family, I join you in your grief to take solace in the comforting thoughts that he has earned a deserved rest in the bosom of his Maker, whom he served diligently while on this mortal planet. Please accept the condolences of my family and I, as well as those of the entire people of Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency, while wishing you more grace and fortitude as you grapple with the realities of this sad event.

We connect with you in prayers for the peaceful repose of his gentle soul with the Lord.

it is with passionate sense of loss but with gratitude to God for His divine arrangement over the demise of your beloved husband MAJOR GENERAL EKPO ARCHIBONG (RTD) which horrendous news occurred on Tuesday 9th March, 2021 at the glorious age of 76 years.

Death has always been a category we have struggled to understand and process from time immemorial; we have fought to make sense of death even as we wrestle with making sense of life.

Ete Ekpo as he was fondly called by friends, family and close associates contributed immensely to the development of Okoyong and Cross River State at large. He had a distinguished Military Career and was bless to hold several key military appointments. it is on this premise that myself, family and the entire Constituency which i represent write to joln our hearts with one another and seek to better understand the imponderable of life with all its uncertainty.

May the soul of the departed rest in peace, Amen.

From The United Church of Christ, Ikeja District

Some people live an entire lifetime and never made a difference in their society, local community and the world at large: you made a difference.
To some of us, we see you as a father; a father is not measured by the size of his strength but by the strength of his heart.
Our father, uncle, brother, and friend. You lived a humble and gracious life according to the word of God: humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will shall lift you up - James 4 verse 10 (KJV).
You have never stopped being supportive.
A man with a quiet and kind spirit yet mysteriously intriguing calmness.
We, The United Church of Christ, Western District 2 Ikeja Lagos will always miss you, Senior Elder Ekpo Archibong (General Rtd).
We know you are resting in the bosom of our Lord Jesus Christ.
You will always remain in our hearts.
Rest in peace till the day of resurrection.
Adieu Senior Elder Archibong.

We mourn the passing on of a rare breed of man, a very humane Leader, a man who inspires his subordinates with his firm principles, discipline and warmth. The weekends I journey to your house in Lagos were wonderful moments in our lives which our youngest daughter still remember till date and which I will always cherish and remember as very special privilege and opportunity to be associated with such a rare personality as you. You were no doubt an inspiration, a man with unparalleled kindness and warmth. Your teaching of self-sustenance which you practicalise so well, continues to ring in my ears.

Ete Ekpo's Tribute.

In as much as death remains inevitable sometimes, we are constrained or tempted to ask a pertinent question on the relativity of mystery between mankind and the monster called death especially, when it concerns our loved ones.
Late Maj Gen/ Anta Dunuo (Chf) Ekpo Archibong fondly called Ete Ekpo was born into a prominent family of Okon Ekpo Akiba Akak, a torch bearer of Okoyong lineage.
Ete Ekpo meant many things to many people who had come across him in one way or the other. I and my household had an unblemished relationship with him which will be greatly missed. Ete Ekpo never skipped anything that had to do with me starting from the first stage of my traditional marriage to the end almost thirty years ago, opening of my restaurant at Ikeja, my convocation ceremony at Lagos State University (Lasu) some years ago and the conferment of my chieftaincy title in Okoyong. In all these functions, Ete Ekpo usually got to the venues before me. He was an epitome of wise counseling.
Ete Ekpo, in as much as we the mortals cannot question the rationale behind your early departure from the planet earth I therefore, pray that God in His infinite mercy grant your soul eternal rest irrespective of human inadequacies which are inherent and synonymous with human race.
It's intrinsically hard for me to come to the realization of the reality that you are no more with us. I am having a hard time struggling with an emotional affinity to say so long a rare gem.

Tribute to Late Denoenuo Major General Ekpo Ekpo Archibong- The Peoples General
It is with great pain that I write this Tribute in honour of one of Okoyong’s most illustrious and patriotic son. The General Ekpo Archibong that I knew was a thoroughbred Okoyong man. He was a very highly disciplined and cultured soldier, gentleman and officer. He was indeed a soldier’s soldier, yet a very gentle and humble family and community man.
Etekpo , as he was fondly called by many of his relations and community members, was a home boy. He was down to earth, though so mighty and great in terms of professional and societal heights and career achievements. He knew his people and his people knew him, yet he was for everybody, highly detribalized and a patriotic Nigerian indeed. My son, his name sake wrote on our family platform when I posted his obituary announcement – (A great man who served his country and was never motivated by greed. May he rest well knowing the legacy he left will outlive him). Indeed I was highly consoled by this epitaph coming from my own son without any influence from me.  It means there is hope for Okoyong, because I was becoming disillusioned and saying that Okoyong Ekurema, with this serial falling of Okoyong greats and the best, of recent and with the General now joining them
Our General meant many things to many people, both within and outside Okoyong. He will be sorely missed. Truth be told, a very big tree has fallen in Okoyong and the vacuum will be very difficult to fill so soon
Adieu the Peoples General, officer and gentleman
Adieu a nobleman and true Kiong
May your great soul Rest in Perfect Peace.
Signed
Antadenuo Dr Okon Akiba

“DEAD BECKONED HIM WITH OUTSTRETCHED HANDS”
It’s not the years in a life that counts, it’s the life in the years Ete-Ekpo (as fondly called) lived. He was the living proof of how fine a person can be or should be.
Here was a life that demands notice, a life that exemplified kindness, a life that inspired emulation, a life that burned so that others’ paths were lighted, ‘Pathfinder’.
Too soon (Ete-Ekpo) has left us. I remember how he used to respond whenever I called or met him. “Sir, mmö komooo!”, “oooh ediye, etiedidie, ndito, ebèfo oo? Ooh asangha ye eye”. Those words I’ll hear no more, mmm...mkpa, afo ememen Akwa ada Idangha nnyin Okpong nnyin. Our lives will be empty in places that his energy once filled.
Ete-Ekpo gave us laughter with adage to back-up, advice, time and encouragement. Only the time is gone but the advice, encouragement and laughter will remain.
Yes, the song has ended but the melody, memories, images, precious thoughts and moments linger on.
Sir, yak esiereio ooo, ete-ebe usen ndo me, sangha sungoo oooo!!!

Truly an lroko tree has fallen, a great inlaw, a fine gentleman in uniform full of humility, honesty and wisdom. The state of Cross River and Nigeria as a whole has truly lost a rare General in name of Major General Ekpo Archibong.
Still like a dream about your demise but dawn on me now that you are truly gone after repeated several visits without seeing who to call Daddy whenever I come, could remember vividly ALL your pieces of advice to me, stories about your days in the army and even up to the current situation in Nigeria.
A General with a difference, a General that never fell to the bullets of wars, a General that never failed or forsaken the wife and children and even up to relations, a General with a golden heart, a General whose shoe no one can ever wear, a General who even after retirement still rendered services to the country, a General whom serving Generals still consult for advice.
Sequel to the book of 2 Tim 4:6-8, l strongly believe you came, saw and conquered and left for us the living to carry on the good fight of faith. Our solace is on the fact that God giveth and He also taketh.
Daddy as l used to call you, keep resting in God's bosom until that resurrection day. Adieu, General Ekpo Archibong because according to George Bernard in His hit song titled ' *The Old Rugged Cross* ', you have truly clung the cross and exchanged it for a crown.
For and On behalf of Chimobi & family.

My name is Brig Gen ID Bello(Rtd) & I am just learning about the passing of my former Boss & Mentor, Maj Gen Ekpo Achibong(Rtd). I was a Cadet of the 15th Regular Course in the Nigerian Defence Academy(NDA) from Jan 1974 to June 1976. During this period, Gen Ekpo Achibong, then a Captain, was one of our military training instructors. Apart from ensuring that we were very well trained, Capt Achibong also additionally played the role of a father to all of us. He ensured we were always well guided such that we were never found wanting. For me personally, I had the privilege of serving with him when he was GOC 2 Mechanized Division Ibadan. I was his Colonel General Staff(Col GS) at the Division Headquarters from 1999 to 2001. Throughout that period he guided me through a very successful tenure until he retired from Service & I left for the War College in 2001. That has been the best part of my military career & I owe it to this great man. Therefore on behalf of myself & all my Coursemates, I hereby send my sincere condolences to his esteemed family. May his good soul Rest In Perfect Peace, AMEN.

TRIBUTE TO MY SUPER BROTHER-IN-LAW: LATE MAJOR GENERAL EKPO ARCHIBONG, CFR OON DSS mni psc(+)

Indeed, my dear General Archibong, as we face the reality of your permanent absence from this firmament, we are consoled with the classical words of Lord John McCray that:
“There is no death! The stars simply go down
To rise upon your heavenly shores
And bright in heaven’s jewel crown
To shine for evermore”.

It has been most daunting and heart wrenching to put this tribute in your honour. My super General, you were a SPECIAL GIFT to me and my entire family. What elegy would I adequately voice in my grief? What dirge can I sing to qualify the immense loss of a great model like our sleeping General?

Gone is a purpose driven Father and Brother.
Gone is a diligent and humble man of great faith and compassion.
Today, I celebrate a man who touched and saved many lives.
I celebrate a man who loved unconditionally.
I celebrate a man who stood by his family through thick and thin.
I celebrate a man who was always there to help in times of need.

General Ekpo Archibong, thank you for your unconditional love to me, my wife and children while you were here on earth with us. Your death is an irreplaceable loss to me and my family. We love you but God loves you best.

We will always remember you.

Etekpo, my fine Soldier, Good night and rest in peace.

This is surely a painful loss not only to you but the entire military family. Your dad will definitely be remembered for his meritorious and distinguished service to the nation. His contributions in projecting and protecting the interests of Nigeria especially during our horrible days in Liberia and Sierra Leone will never be forgotten. I had the privilege of interacting with very senior officers who knew/worked with your dad and the story was always the same; your dad was indeed a force to be reckoned with. I pray for the repose of his beautiful soul and for God to grant you and your family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

As mortals, our journey on earth begins at birth and ends when we take our last breath. For our dearly beloved and highly respected General Ekpo Ekpo Archibong, aka Ete Ekpo that journey spanned a period of 76 glorious and splendid years.

Meeting and getting to know "The People's General" as he was fondly called - a visionary and patriotic persona, with such engaging and sparkling personality - was an honour and a rare privilege for me and my family, one we will ever cherish.

Adieu Ete Ekpo!!!
The sad news of your demise came to us as a shock few days after you departed this world.
We spoke last while I was abroad, as in your character, you scolded me as to why you wouldn't hear from me for a while. Your loving wife bailed me out and echoed; She says she will see you when she returns. I never knew I will never get to see you again.
You were a father to the fatherless, a brother, an uncle, a friend, a confidant, a mentor and finally a boss to me. It is difficult to have all these in only one man except in Major General Ekpo Archibong.
You were a quintessential gentleman to the Corp, an Honest and Excellent man, full of Humility, Peace, Wisdom and epitome of 'Beauty' and Brains.
Your death is a great loss to your esteemed family, friends and the Nation at large, but then what can we do?
I pray that, the Almighty God will grant you eternal rest and give your darling wife and children the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
Sanga sung oo Ete Ekpo.

It was Okon, your son, birthday mate and my son-in-law, who brought our families together. The bond thereafter has been very strong.
When the twins came, their Sunday Sunday encounter with you strenghtened the bond even better. When they could speak, their stories of what Grandpa did for them on their visits and the ways they said them was a source of joy for both families.
I had looked forward that we would continue to grow our families much stronger. It was therefore a great shock when your passing on hit us like a bolt from the blues.
May the good Lord receive your marvelous soul into His Kingdom and grant you eternal rest and the families you left behind the fortitude to bear your sudden departure. Amen.

and my son-in-law that brought our families together. The bond thereafter has been so strong. When the twins came, the Sunday encounter between you and them developed and when they could speak, reports of what the other grand father did for them could not be missed.
The lion heart of the General we have observed had been moderated by his humanity and care for his colleagues, friends and relatives who recently passed on. His grief was great and he could not contend much more.
May his gentle soul rest in the bosom of the Lord. May the good Lord give the family the fortitude to contend this great loss.

We all waited for you to wake up from your sleep but all to no avail . Now it has finally dawned on me that you have gone to be with our heavenly father to occupy the special and beautiful space He has prepared and kept for you because of all your good deeds in the lives of so many . You were always a shoulder for us all to lean on but now ...

Honestly , this whole story of your demise is still like a dream to me . Daddy , you were not only a General of the Nigerian Army but also a father , friend , inlaw , grandpa and everything to us all . How I wish I could turn back the hands of time by bringing you back to stay with us all again because we are already missing you. Your demise is really a heartbreaking to me because right now , there is no one to call me " Miss " again like you used to and neither is there anyone for me to call " Daddy Daddy " again . We cannot question God on this but rather we have to thank Him just as it is written in the Bible that in everything , we should give thanks to Him.

Daddy , your memory will still continue to linger in all our hearts as there will not be a day that will go by without us thinking of you . Please keep resting in the bossom of our Lord until the resurrection day when we shall all meet again and to part no more .

You came into the lives of the Olawoyin's in the late 80s. As soon as you found out that my mum was from Cross River, you embraced my family as yours... My dad, Major(rtd) A.B.O. Olawoyin became your best Soldier, friend and in-law.

I remember your simplicity, humility and smiles... Always taking evening strolls around the Officers quarters in Akure.. You would always stop by our house to visit. You didn't hesitate to introduce your late wife to my mum. Anytime she comes visiting from Kaduna, she would also visit us...

As the Commanding Officer, your residence was open to us all. There was no difference between your home and ours.. We were free to visit and spend time with Ekpo, Archibong and Okon whenever they were around...

You were a true Soldier and a gentleman.. I saw you last when you lost your brother; Prof Ekpo.. You couldn't recognize me but as soon as I told you who I was, you were super excited...

Rest on great General!!!
You came, you saw and you conquered..
May you find eternal rest at Abraham's bosom.

Major General Ekpo Ekpo Archibong's demise shocked me beyond words. This is not because I don't know that death is a sure appointment with all mortals but that there were no visible signs of its stealthy visit and many of us were ill-prepared. Ete Ekpo, as I oftentimes called him, was a very loving brother who always had good pieces of advice for those who approached him. He was gentle and kind and of cool temperament. His heart and abode were always open to receive all who knocked.
When I went through the "valley of the shadow of death", he always reminded me that sunny days would still come my way, that I should remain patient and hopeful. When he too was afflicted he displayed great fortitude which must have come only from God. Truly, "many are the afflictions of the righteous but the Lord delivereth him from them all" Ps 34:19.
As the ADC of Gen Obasanjo, and they were on an official visit to Benin, where I was the Commanding Officer of 3 Infantry Battalion, he invited me over to meet with the Head of State. At first I felt shy but with some encouragement to come " visit your Commander-in- Chief," I summoned up courage and went. It turned out to be beautiful and a thing of honour for me, courtesy Ete Ekpo. Ete Ekpo was to chairman my wedding reception some years later in Lagos.
Major General Archibong was a fine, disciplined and loyal military officer. He was a detribalised Nigerian and a man of few words. We love you dear General but God loves you more. Sanga sung o.

and relational affection whenever you pass by. Without hurry you would come down from your Jeep or stop your driver to great everyone. A rare pedigree of army general.

Your exit to departure hall was so shocking and still painful.

Adieu, Gen.Ekpo Achibong, sleep on - the friend of all, Good nite Father General till resurrection morning when we meet to part no more.

Sir it was with a rude shock that we received the news of your death. No doubt you were the most humble, attentive and knowledgeable person I have met. Your humility was top notch. A Compassionate father with a heart of gold. You had a contagious smile and infectious laugh. You helped those you know and people you didnt know. Sir you will be missed dearly. Sleep well great man.
