I was shocked and dismayed to hear these terrible news. As an experimentalist on CDF and as a member of the faculty at Rochester (which is near Buffalo), I have had numerous fruitful discussions with Urlich, and co-authored one paper with him on Z' bosons. Urlich was an exceptional physicist. I will miss him and our physics discussions very much. My deepest condolences for your loss.- A. Bodek

Dear Yvonne,

Please accept my deepest sympathies. Uli was a great colleague and friend. I'll miss our many, but too infrequent, reunions at various conferences and at the labs. He was always quick with helpful insights and best of all a hearty laugh!

Yours Sincerely

Uli was a fantastic physicist and a great person with a wonderful sense of humour and pragmatism that helped many an experimentalist. There are many landmark Tevatron papers that wouldn't have been possible without Uli:he was an electroweak legend. I will miss his insight, wit and laughter greatly and I offer my deepest condolences - Mark Lancaster, UCL.

Dear Yvonne,
Uli was a wonderful colleague and friend, and a bright light inthe world of physics. Our group here depended on him for wisdom in our searches for new physics at the Tevatron; for years he was the theorist we would turn to for questions. We shared some good meals and a lot of good conversation over the years. He was very special. My deepest condolences. Henry

There are never words to express the deep sense of loss. To never again see his shining face behind the stack of paper on the corner of his desk. The laughter and the wit, the charm and the undaunted enthusiasm about our next physics and art collaboration all and much more will be sadly missed. My deepest sympathy to you.

Uli was the most cheerful physicist I know, always with a smile on his face and a sense of the humour in any situation. He was also the best kind of theorist: so careful and complete that his papers were usually the last, best word on the subject. He will leave a hole in the world that cannot be filled. I will miss him.

(My sincere condolences. Uli was a cheerful soul with a great sense of humor. He was even able to laugh about himself, a trait that is too uncommon in this world. I will miss him.)

Dear Yvonne,

I will always remember Uli as one of the happiest people I have known. Such a source of good physics ideas and advice as well... When he visited MSU on sabbatical, it was a treat to hear him give our graduate students a whole new perspective on their collider project. Then he flew home from MSU to go marry you and he was just beaming with joy. That's how I remember him. -- Liz S.

Dr. Baur was one of my thesis committee members back in 2004. About 2 winters ago, I happened to stop by the physics dept building and found him working in his office though it was a Saturday evening. We talked a while... Dear Uli's family, Uli was a great physicist. I met him in Madison when he was a postdoc and I was a student. We did not talk much, but for sure I learned a lot from his famous WW, ZZ papers. His trade mark was that there is always a smile on his face and always in his light-blue shirts. My deepest condolences for the loss. --Kingman

Uli was such a bright light in my life. It was always wonderful to run into
him unexpectedly at Fermilab--- we would talk about all kinds of things. He
was gracious, broad in knowledge, and thoughtful.
Uli also played an important role for me in my work on the W, Z, and top, and in developing signature-based searches. There have been several wonderful theorists who I trust to respond in a deep way to my often poorly-formulated questions. Uli instinctively understood what was troubling me, even though I myself couldn't.
I miss him. He was very very special. Sincerely, Henry

Stairway to Heaven

If tears could build a stairway
And memories a lane
I would walk right up to Heaven
And bring you back again
No farewell words were spoken
No time to say "Goodbye"
You were gone before I knew it
And only God knows why
My heart still aches with sadness
And secret tears still flow
What it meant to love you
No one can ever know
But now I know you want me
To mourn for you no more;
To remember all the happy times
Life still has much more is store
Since you'll never be forgotten
I pledge to you today-
A hollowed place within my heart
Is where you'll always stay

The Deep Blue Sea

Come along, come with me,
Take a dive in the deep blue sea.
Put on your gear, let's explore
All the way to the ocean floor!

See that snail wrapped in curls?
Look! An oyster wearing pearls!
Watch the octopus oh so dark,
But don't you dare to pet the shark!

Dive on down, seaward bound,
Motion in the ocean is all around!
Dive on down, seaward bound,
Motion in the ocean is all around!

Now we're very far below,
The lantern fish are all aglow.
Is that a tiny shock you feel?
You just met an electric eel!

Giant blue whales start to stir,
Bigger than dinosaurs ever were!
Wave good-bye to the squid and sponge,
This is the end of our deep-sea plunge!

Dive on down, seaward bound,
Motion in the ocean is all around!
Dive on down, seaward bound,
Motion in the ocean is all around!

Meish Goldish

I remember how excited Uli got, after I showed him my pictures I took while I was snorkeling. He wanted to see this wonderful world by himself. I taught him how to snorkel and after a while he really liked it. He could see by himself what a wonderful underwater world was waiting for him to explore. And he was so excited to see his first ray in the shallow water, it was almost floating towards him.

Honey, I miss you so much and you left a big big hole in my heart. It hurts so much to be alone. You were my everything, my soulmate, you brightened my day with your presense. Your laugh was so catching. There are so many things I wanted to tell you, but now you're gone. I don't know how to live without you. In loving memory,

Yvonne

In October 2006 a tremendous early snowstorm hit Buffalo, NY. Two feet of heavy snow fell on trees that were still fully in leaf, knocking out electrical power in the area for a full week. For a few days during this unusual event, Ulrich stayed at our house. With his quiet good cheer and wry humor, he seemed to be everywhere, helping us to shovel the heavy snow and clear branches, and washing dishes after meals. In the evenings, we all joked and told stories by candlelight; he quietly befriended our old dog. This is how I really came to know Ulrich.

Yvonne and Baur family, we are so very sorry for your loss. We miss Ulrich very much.
