Mrs. Vada Jane Cutts Brummitt, 86, of Raleigh, loving daughter, wife and homemaker, died May 3, 2014 at Hospice of Wake County.

Jane was born May 1, 1928 in Baxley, Georgia to Harry Thomas Cutts and Ruby Bass Cutts. Her father was a demonstrator of flue-cured tobacco cultivation in Baxley and her mother was a housewife. They moved to Tar River, NC in 1930 and subsequently settled on the farm outside Creedmoor, NC where she grew up.

She had a life long interest in words and language that was recognized in the third grade when she was often asked to tell stories at the end of the school day. She graduated from Wake Forest College as an English major with a BA in 1950. Throughout her life she entertained friends and family with her observations and tales in Christmas letters and wrote more than 60 poems.

A memorial service will be held at 10 am on May 10 in the chapel at Eakes Funeral Home, 106 Clement Ave, Oxford, NC. Burial will follow at Carolina Memorial Gardens, 102 Moss Road, Creedmoor, NC with visitation after committal at graveside.

Mrs. Brummitt is survived by her husband of 62 years, Dennis Brummitt, Raleigh, NC; sister-in-law Pat B. Cokewell, North Bend, WA; brother-in-law John E. (Jack) Tefft, Virginia Beach, VA; 10 nieces and nephews; 32 great nieces and nephews; and 14 great-great nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Brummitt was preceded in death by three brothers-in-law, Ranson S. Averitt , Nathaniel T. Brummitt, and Robert T. Cokewell, and five sisters-in-law, Ann B. Averitt, Dorothy J. Brummitt, Isabel C. Brummitt, Mary Frances Brummitt, and Evelyn B. Tefft, and niece Anne dela Vergne.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mrs. Brummitt may be made to a charity or hospice of your choice.
