Just Mom

March 26, 2017

The year is 2016 and I decide to boil some pasta on my barbecue side burner. It is summer time and hot so I figure do it outside, why heat up the house. All is going well until I decide to bring the pot of boiled pasta into the house. As I come into the house I slip and drop the pot of boiling water on the ground. The water splashes down and all over my left foot. The pain is excruciating! I know I am going to need some medical attention. What to do? I call my Mom on the phone and explain the problem. Ten minutes later she's at the door "Did you run cold water over it?" she then proceeds to get a damp towel and wrap my foot in it for our trip. I am thinking of going to the hospital Emergency Department, we talk and decide to call the Doctors office and get an appointment. We get an appointment and Mom drives me to the Doctors Office. I have severe second degree burns bordering on third degree burns. Mom takes me home; all is taken care of.

The story does not end there. The next morning who comes walking into my house but Mom (she has a key) "you change your dressing yet?" I have not, she then proceeds to clean my foot and apply ointment and replace the dressing. She comes back to the house every day for three weeks till my foot is just about completely healed.

Again the story does not end there, right after I am healed up Mom shows up at the door. She has a huge bag in her hand and hands it to me "here it's an early birthday present", our birthdays are in October four days apart. It’s a pasta pot. I laugh and ask “I guess you’re saying I can’t be trusted to boil pasta?” She just chuckles.

FYI, I only boil pasta in the pasta pot now.

We little knew that day,
God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death, we do the same.

It broke our hearts to lose you.
You did not go alone.
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.

You left us beautiful memories,
Your love is still our guide.
And although we cannot see you,
You are always at our side.

Our family chain is broken,
And nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.
