Valeria Ciobanca (née Cighi) was born to Floare Lapos (1888-1952) and Dumitru Cighi (1879-1961) in Bocsa, Salaj, Romania, on July 10th, 1922. The family was Greek Catholic; she had three sisters and three brothers. Valeria got married to Vasile Ciobanca (1921-1995) in 1945 and they had four children: Maria (married name: Mirghesiu; born July 1st, 1946), Elena (married name: Opris; b. November 15th, 1948), Ioan (b. October 16th, 1950), and Petru (b. June 28th, 1954). Valeria Ciobanca fell paralyzed on November 19, 1998 and her left leg was amputated above the knee in November 2007. She died in Zalau on the ambulance in the way to her home, at 10 PM, on April 22nd, 2015.
