30 some years ago, my dear friend Denise and her beautiful & funny sister, Val, came to a party at my home in Northern Virginia.We had invited neighbors, coworkers and some college friends, too, to include Evan. Denise quickly asked me who Evan was because he was “perfect for her sister.”  What clarity to share a relationship with your sister that could prove to be so prophetic!

Looking at the beautiful family photos shared on this memorial website brought both smiles and tears as I reflected on the journey Val and Evan’s lives took from that simple meeting. So grateful to have spent time with this special couple.

To Evan, Virgil and Val’s loved ones, praying that your memories comfort you as you mourn the loss of your dear wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend. 

As Val was preparing to retire from her service to the State of California this spring, a remarkable team of colleagues worked with Governor Newsom's office to see that Valerie received this Letter of Appreciation from the Governor himself. She put a lot of her energy and her soul into her work and cared about the quality of her efforts.  It is wonderful to see that it was not missed and instead recognized, which is not all that common in today's world... click on the PDF icon to view the commendation.
