Van Andrew Culberson, Sr. was born December 14, 1952 in Hogansville, Georgia to the late Jessie Roy and Lizzie Culberson. He was the thirteenth of fourteen children. Van joined Springfield Baptist Church at an early age and for his love of music he later joined the choir.

Van played drums in the West End School marching band. He started his own band at the age of fifteen, playing drums, singing & performing until his passing. Van was very talented in many ways; he wrote, produced and recorded one song, “I’m in Need” on the Tomahawk Record Label. Van performed with numerous live bands and became an opening supporting act to major recording artists. He also was an artist for WSBTV Channel 2 at the young age of 16. Van was a master at whatever he strived to do.

Van married Barbara McGhee and unto this union two children were born, Van Andrew Culberson, Jr. and Montavia Jerome Culberson. One child preceded him in death, his oldest child, Vanessa Tigner.

Van was the father of six children. He leaves to mourn his passing, four sons, Sgt. Marcus McGhee (Kasandra) of Hawaii, Van Andrew Culberson Jr. (LaTasha) of Grantville Ga., Montavia Jerome Culberson (Ebony) of Hampton, Ga., and Ji’Michael Hopson of Hogansville, Ga.; one daughter, LaNessa Dawson of LaGrange, Ga; one step-daughter Honey DeCarla Landers (DraKarr) of Riverdale, Ga.; a very dear and devoted companion Ms. Jackie Miller; a wonderful friend and a loving mother to his sons Barbara Culberson. Fourteen grandchildren; one great grandchild; three sisters, Janie Hardy, Catherine Dawson, Rebecca Culliver (Michael); one brother, James Culberson, three siblings who preceded him in death; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
