His Life

My Dad

December 9, 2017

My dad was born July 26th 1929 to Hilda Schwisow  and Clyde Gilbert. He attended School in Davenport Nebraska. He was in many sports and he loved golden glove  boxing and playing football. At Davenport high he met Lila Avers, after Lila completed high school at the age of 18 they married in Belleville, Kansas. He was a carpenter by trade and worked various jobs throughout his life. He worked at Pauley Lumber, he worked in cornfields but he loved carpentry. He had three daughters with Lila., by the time he was 21yrs old he had three children to support. Patricia Claudia and Dixie were his first three girls and he worked very hard to provide for them. Right before the other girls graduated high school, along came his fourth daughter Dawn. Lyle and him we're both 34 years old at the birth of their fourth daughter Dawn. Once the other children left home he made a decision to quit his job and get a loan and start his own business. He'd only completed the eighth grade but he was a very great businessman. He not only got the loan but he built his first bar himself at 1710 West 2nd in Hastings Nebraska. In 1968 he opened for business and he would own several bars until his death in 1990. In 1974 he decided to sell Gilbert's Bar on West 2nd and move to Holstein and by the bar in that town. After one year he decided that the small town wasn't right for any us, so he moved us all back to Hastings. He then purchased a bar at 621 West 1st Street and named It's a Long Branch. Although it did change names to Vern's place in the early 80s,  he owned and operated it until 1990 when he passed away. His daughter Claudia, then purchased the bar from the estate and operated it for the next 10 years under the name Happy Hour. Vern passed away suddenly on December 29th 1990 in Hastings Nebraska at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital. He left behind his ex-wife Lila his four daughters and at the time six grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was a very generous and giving man. He always felt better when he could help someone in need. He enjoyed gardening and spending time with his dog on his time off. He is still greatly missed by his entire family.
