Remembering Aunt Jennie
Thinking about Aunt Jennie's life brings smiles and sweet
memories of the fun times we shared. Our family enjoyed each and every time we
were together. Aunt Jennie was a great entertainer. She loved to
cook and we loved to partake. She would bake
Cream Cheese Brownies for birthdays. If not brownies, she could bake any
cake Pig Picking, German Chocolate, Red Velvet snf always baked with
love. Aunt Jennie kept a little book on her dresser with everyone's
birthday and anniversary dates. She was quick with a joke and
storytelling. Her witty charm was unmatched. She always had us on the
edge of our seats anticipating what her next story would be. She liked to order
merchandise from mail order catalogs and could find the funniest comical
birthday cards.
Aunt Jennie loved her chocolates. Russell Stover was her favorite boxed
candy. Though she wouldn't turn down Whitman's either. She enjoyed her
chocolates and coffee prior to retiring for the evening. Another
favorite of hers were Little Debbie's peanut butter wafer cookie covered in
chocolate. I agree
Aunt Jennie's home always had that "laundry day" clean fragrance. She
told me she used Avon's Perfumed moth crystals. Of course, I had to
purchase this for my home. I wanted my home to smell as clean as Aunt Jennie's.
A very special friend in her life was Uncle Roger Gray Averette. They were
introduced by a family member who also worked for Liggett & Meyers Tobacco
Company. They dated for many years. He passed away in 1973 from having
pneumonia. I will always remember how much she loved him and my Aunt Louise.
Aunt Jennie relied on public transportation. She would sometimes walk to where
she needed to go. Even to the grocery store or the mall. Back in the day
it was Yellow Taxi Cab service in Durham. She was a petite lady and her
wardrobe was skirts, blouses and dresses, stockings and dress shoes.
Alfred Dunner was the brand she preferred. At home it was housecoats and
her Daniel Green slippers. She loved house plants and had a green
thumb I believe she could make any puny plant flourish again.
Ma Haley, or Mrs. Georgia Haley as we called her, was a sweet little lady who
Aunt Jennie lived with and was an extra special person in her life whom she
loved dearly. So there was Georgia and Virginia living in North Carolina.
As years passed and more life took its place, we were not able to see her as
much as we wanted too. She had lived in two different apartments in
Durham and moved to a mobile home in the country next door to her brother and
sister-in-law, KB and Jean Hill.
I loved my Aunt Jennie and she loved me. She was a very special aunt to
me, who I am honored to have called her, my Aunt Jennie.
