Mrs. Hopson was born in Columbus, Georgia on July 21, 1918, the daughter of the late Carolyn Cordelia Mitchell McElvey and Charles Albert McElvey, Sr… Mrs. Hopson received her undergraduate degree from The University of Georgia, Masters from Auburn University, and Specialist Degree from The University of Georgia. In the beginning of her career she was employed by the Georgia Department of Agriculture where she was a visiting teacher; instructing rural families in many aspects that made living on a farm more desirable. She then moved into the classroom of the Heard County High School where she taught young women and a few young men Home Economics. Many of her students obtained their State Degrees in the Future Homemakers of America, and received numerous awards thru the years. It was her wonderful tutelage that turned them into productive women who were self sufficient in the art of homemaking. Mrs. Virginia had a way of teaching that made you want to try anything just to please her. Her warm spirit and slight chuckle made anyone comfortable. Her wonderful contributions to the students of Heard County will long be remembered. Even though Mrs. Virginia never looked at the clock when her school activities were concerned, she still found time to be involved in many extra activities. She was a past president of the Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority, member of the Georgia Association of Educators, Heard County Chamber of Commerce, Heard County Pilot Club, Friendship Force, United Methodist Women; Heard County Historical Society, Red Hat Society, and loved camping with the Troup Travelers. She was a faithful member of the Franklin United Methodist Church, where she and her loving husband Nick Hopson raised their son Barry on the Christian Principals that they both lived by. She will long be remembered by all who knew her for the great contributions she made in the lives of so many.
She is survived by two grandchildren Jared Hopson (Nikki), and Lorrie Hannah; one great-granddaughter, Annesley Hopson, all of Franklin, GA.; and one sister, Lillian Cumbaa of Marietta, GA…
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband and son, Nick and Barry Hopson; and two brothers, Charles and Bobby McElvey.
