Her Life

Everybody's Grandmother

September 13, 2011

When my Grandmother was in the hospital, a doctor asked my family what my Grandmother did (or used to do) for a living.

She was a wife. She and my Grandfather may have had their fair share of disagreements but they stayed and weathered the storm of financial woes, children and illnesses together.

She was a Mother. She patched up her children's skinned knees, fed their heartaches and took their temperatures with a gentle kiss on their heated foreheads. She loved fiercely and heroically because, if you knew my Dad, Aunt and Uncle's, then you'd know that it would take a hero to make it through all 6 of their teenage lives.

She was a Grandmother. Her love was unconditional and unwavering. She was our safe haven, our protector, our source for endless amounts of chocolates and, at the time, deeply under appreciated biscuits.

My Granny worked harder than most of the people I know without ever getting a single paycheck. She took care of everyone and anyone and she made her living by living for others.

 That's what she did.

My Grandmother passed away on a warm Saturday morning in September. I believe she was welcomed into Heaven by her Sister and Brothers, my Grandfather's arm wrapped around her shoulder while she held my cousin Michael close to her heart, were she has kept him all this time.

One day I will see her smile again and I will feel the warmth of her embrace. And as much as it breaks my heart to know that I will not be able to see her again in this life, I still rejoice. I know my Grandmother is happy and is waiting, patiently, for the rest of her family so we can all live, together, in peace and harmony forever.
