Her Life

Virginia Hall Matson

May 9, 2012

Amazing to say the least.  She's been compared to the 'energizer bunny', for her determination, will and ability to survive.  Through the years we've all been in fear of losing her.  Our fears came true today, May 8th 2012.  We had to say "good-bye" to our beloved Granny.

Virginia Matson was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend to many.  She learned to work hard at a young age.  Nothing came easy to her but she always strived to do her best. She raised her daughters with dignity. She was always there to encourage those around her.  She worked for the phone company for many years, took the bus to downtown Detroit. She led her department and was well respected by her peers.  As a child, I used to love to hear her stories about managing her department.  She believed that in order to lead, you needed to know the job.  She was not opposed to working from the ground up.

Oh how we all looked forward to her Sunday dinners. Her magical desserts and who could forget her baking at Christmas time. She made a tin of cookies for every household, and she would always put extra fudge in Uncle Bud's tin.  She knew that's what he loved best.  If someone would go out of their way to help her she would surprise them with a delicious treat.

She taught us all so much. She opened her home to anyone and made you feel at ease just  by being in her midst.  She instilled a sense of pride and a hard work ethic in each of us. She worked hard to keep her family's needs met.  She gave credit where it was due and helped those in need.  She really made me proud.

I know there are many more stories and memories that others have of our beloved Granny.  I hope that you'll take time to share them with the rest of us.  Through these stories, and through us, her legacy will live on.

Thank you for taking the time and remember to cherish each day that you have with your loved ones.
