Walter Robert Long, 65, of Why, Az. passed away at Banner University Medical Center Hospital in Tucson, Az. on November 29, 2015 after battling lung cancer for several months. Born in Callicoon, NY. he was the son of the late Alice DeMayo Long, of Bronx, NY, and Ozmer Long, of Callicoon, NY. He graduated from Delaware Valley Central School in Callicoon, NY, served as an army veteran, and then worked various local jobs until he became a member of the Damascus Ambulance crew. It was there he found his calling in the service of others and sought out and earned an LPN from East Stroudsburg University at the School of Nursing. He worked as a nurse at Wayne Memorial Hospital, Ellen Memorial Nursing Home, and then at Ribado’s and Osprey Ridge Nursing Homes for many years. The last few years of his nursing career, he worked as a home health care nurse in the areas surrounding Honesdale, PA.
A man of many talents and hobbies, he  was a voracious reader, loved target shooting, was an avid hunter, and enjoyed scuba diving, wood crafting, and metal fabricating. He delighted in activities such as riding his motorcycle, camping, volunteering, and living the retired life in his motorhome.

He leaves behind a large, extended family: Wife, Melaney Dexheimer Long, of Why, AZ; daughter, Tracy Long Turner, of Honesdale, PA; son Walter Long, of Damascus, PA; sons Christopher and Daniel Dexheimer, of Honesdale, PA; daughter Tonya Dexheimer, of Carbondale; and several grandchildren. Also surviving him are sibling brothers William and James Long, Mario Darder, sisters Marguerite Long, Darlene Farley, Denise Dirig, Christine Leonard, and Lori Raub, as well as their respective spouses and many nieces, nephews.  

As a final act of charity, he  donated his body to science to support medical science and the good of humanity. As a result, no services will be offered. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to a cancer research organization of choice in his memory.
