ForeverMissed

On July 12, 2021, Walter Koslowski went gently into that good night. He is loved and will be missed by many, but especially his wife of 57 years Arlie (McCombs), his daughters and their partners Lisa, Susan (Greg Lawrence), Jennifer (Jeff Martin), and his grandchildren Katie, Christopher, Claire, Benjamin, and Livi. Walt is survived by siblings Erika (Maidul Khan) and Eric and is predeceased by his brother Ditmar and his parents Emma (Balko) and Afanasi.

Walter’s life was the stuff of which movies are made. He was born in 1938 in Luck Poland (today Lutsk Ukraine) and his family immigrated to Canada from Germany following the Second World War. Walter was thirteen years old and spoke no English, but quickly learned the language through reading Western novels loaned to him by a caring teacher. Walt’s parents both worked day and night jobs, so as the eldest of four, Walter looked after the younger children when he was not employed picking strawberries or as a bricklayer’s assistant. After a brief foray into Engineering at The University of Toronto, Walt found his true vocation in Medicine and was a graduate of the medical class of 1965 from The University of Western Ontario (now Western University). Walter was a dedicated doctor who met his patients’ needs with compassion, diagnostic and technical talent, and tireless commitment. “The diagnosis is in the history” he would intone, and true to that belief, Walt’s practice focused on quality time spent with each and every patient. Generally a man of few words, Walt was most voluble and animated when relating medical anecdotes of which there were over fifty years. He delivered generations of babies for many families in Milton and was an integral part of the Emerg. and the OR at Milton District Hospital. Walt did it all while harnessing his Burt Reynold’s charm, and he was affectionately known in the hospital community as ‘Dr. Kos’ or simply Kos.

Walt was a dreamer and a romantic who enjoyed solitude. Despite suffering from seasickness, he was a Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve every summer during university, and in this role he travelled to Alaska, Iceland, and the East Coast of Canada. His love of water and adventure led him to buy his own small sailboat, which he enjoyed sailing in Georgian Bay, and an unrealized often-discussed dream was to paddle the Nahanni River. Walt was an accomplished tennis player, skier, and golfer and enjoyed many trips centred around these pursuits with Arlie, the family, and friends. Walter appreciated photography and had a keen eye for beauty, and his love of technology was only matched with his impatience for technology. His family looked forward to his slide shows and home movies and tolerated his slow-to-execute photographs. Walt’s interest in gadgetry and fine audio equipment supported his excellent ear and healthy appreciation for a diverse range of music. He was an agile and melodic whistler and an occasional guitarist.

In Milton, Walt realized another lifelong passion, as he and his steadfast supporter Arlie carved an oasis out of the Niagara Escarpment. Here, the curly-haired boy in lederhosen who crossed the Atlantic in the hold of a ship created his own Canadian paradise replete with wildlife, fruit, vegetables, and an uphill roadway that required plowing in winter and grading in summer. There were mountains of zucchini, piles of tomatoes, bushels of apples, and always a yellow labrador retriever grazing amid the bounty. Feeding the birds became a significant commitment for Walt and Arlie as gallons of seed, nectar, and fruit were supplied for orioles, indigo buntings, grosbeaks, finches, and many others. Ultimately, it was this parade of wildlife: flocks of wild turkeys, raccoon families, foxes, rodents, and songbirds that entertained Walter and gave him great pleasure in his retirement. He loved to sit on his back deck in the sun, watch the life around him, and take care of his pool, roadway, and lawns. It is comforting to know that Walter’s final moments were spent in the environment he cherished, tending to and surrounded by his beautiful property.

Man sieht die Sonne langsam untergehen
und erschrickt doch,
wenn es plötzlich dunkel ist.
- Franz Kafka
You see the sun slowly setting
and yet you are startled
when it is suddenly dark.

Brenda and my condolences to Arlie and family. I was in medical school with Walt. He was such a great guy then and clearly so well loved by his patients throughout the years. There really is no better tribute than to be loved by one’s family and those we serve.

My family and I were so lucky to have Dr. Koslowski as our family doctor when we moved to Milton in 1978. He was caring, dedicated and professional and was always there for us. It is with great sadness that we heard of his sudden passing and wish him peace and may God bless him and his family.

To Arlie and her family. I was deeply saddened to learn of Dr Koslowski’s passing.
My three years in the office with Sandra, Marian, Dr Hester and Dr. Kos and all the wonderful patients holds some very special memories. He was such a kind thoughtful man who enjoyed life to the fullest. There were not enough hours in the day for Dr Kos to accomplish all that he felt obligated to achieve, but somehow he managed.
So thankful that my path in life lead me to know Dr. Koslowski and his family.

I’m sorry to learn of the passing Dr Koslowski. I didn’t have the good fortune to meet him but feel I knew who a wee bit through the many stories Susan told me. It sounded as if he a storybook life. Sending lots of love to the entire family.

Our sincerest condolences to Arlie and all the family.
We had many good times at Dr. Don's court in Milton and also Hilton Head, where we played tennis every morning and golfed in the afternoon. We always made sure to dine at the German restaurant among others. With the names of Koslowski and Aikenhead our reservations were under "White" to simplify matters! When we were in Walt's company he was always smiling. Thanks for the good times.

What a beautiful tribute by Walt’s family! He will be missed by all that knew him. We have lived near Walt for many years and had the pleasure of watching him work around his property and help all his neighbours with the plowing of the mutual driveway each year. He was always ready with a smile, a wave and a comment in passing!! His dry humour and anecdotes were always welcome at our get togethers. Walt went through so many illnesses and yet still managed to ride his tractor regularly! We will miss him. May Arlie and the family find strength and solace in his loving memories.

Tribute from Janet, Blair, Ken and Scott Clevely. We loved Dr. Kos. He was our doctor for almost 50 years. He supported our family through many health issues and was always ready to listen and share stories. The friendly, family atmosphere at his office was a great comfort as well. We remember Dr. Kos accompanying the Grade 6 Algonquin Trip from W.I.Dick Middle School. He joined in the games and gave medical support. The photos and his life story are amazing and so wonderful to learn more about this great man.

Deanna and I were saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Koslowski this past week. My mother, Marian Pearce, worked for Kos for many years, and he became an important friend to our family in happy times but also at times of grief and sadness. He was a kind and gentile giant and we will miss him. Our condolences to Arlie and the rest of the family.

This is a beautiful tribute to Walt who was so loved by his wife, daughters, extended family and community. I learned a lot about him I didn't know! I will remember his love of medicine which I found very intimidating! His warmth and kindness to me even when I called Susan from Europe in the middle of the night. His beautiful Milton home I was lucky enough to spend holidays at as a University student. His quiet strength and dedication to medicine and his patients. Arlie and family, you're in my thoughts at this really terrible time. So sorry for your loss. Thinking of you all. Simon, Ella, Liam, Adam Hoogewerf and Sarah & Jack Chritchley

So sorry. Great friend who was always there for Bill when he needed him. Such good times on the tennis court and golf course. Hope that Don, Bill and Walt are playing golf and can find a 4th for doubles. Love always, Maureen Morgan.

He was not impressed when I named my dog Wally. No connection intended. It was a tribute to Leave It To Beaver not my Dad's friend. I'll always remember Dr Koslowski visiting Dad (Bill) at home and being the only one to tell him he didn't have a whale in his "ketch". Dad said everyone else could see it! Walt straightened THAT out. Sports makes great friends. Thanks for all the visits. Tracy

I was so very sad to hear this news - what a wonderful tribute to Kos and the family that was so very important to him - his pride and joy!
I worked with Kos at his old office in the early 80's (along with Sandy and Diane and Dr. Val Hester) - it seems like yesterday. We used to have some amazing talks over the piles of charts on his desk. When I was in labour with my daughter, he was there within minutes of my GP reaching out and since the nurses were busy with another delivery, Walt and Glen took over. We ran into each other over the years (always a great conversation to be had), but we moved to B.C. in 1994, so our chance meetings were no more. However, I carried all I learned from him with me throughout my nursing career. He had such a positive impact on so many people, all of whom will be forever grateful.
